Waitlist for a renter?

Okay, DVC experts, I have a question for you all...

I am looking to rent points for a stay in January, and it seems like BLT is pretty much gone for 1br & 2br's. I was hoping to find out about the waitlist. Since I am not a DVC owner, I assume I cannot get my name on the waitlist.

Do I need to have a DVC owner get on a waitlist on my behalf? If what I want comes off the waitlist for me, do I need to then rent from that owner?

Is there a better way to do this?

Am I outta luck?

Thanks!

Yes only an owner can have a wait list. An owner is not going to wait list for a renter unless you have already made a reservation through that owner. Then a wait list would be your back up option. That's if a owner even is willing to do it, because it could be more or less points and then you will owe more money or they will owe you a refund.

I haven't rented my points, but I don't think I would offer a wait list to a renter. Others may feel differently.

I also don't rent out my points and I agree with Vicki. I wouldn't waitlist for a renter based on extra money required or refund or whatever. And without any reservation at all, I definitely would not waitlist because a waitlist doesnt' guarantee anything. I've had two waitlists so far and got neither of them. Both were several months ahead of time.

If you are looking at BLT for the marathon, that is what I had waitlisted and only for three or four nights.

You need to find a owner who wants to rent and is willing to waitlist. As a owner, I wouldn't do it.

Thank you for your input.

My follow up question is: what is the risk of waitlisting for the owner? Is the owner obligated to use the points if they get what they want off the list?

i'll waitlist for the renter if i have full payment up front, no refunds. not a bad idea either, gives renter guarantee of accommodations even if waitlist doesn't come through.

good luck.

As an owner that was looking to rent my points, I would not commit to a waitlist for a renter. If the waitlist never came through, then I would still have my points and if there was enough time, still have try to rent them out again.

The renter would have to commit to something other than what they were looking for and pay the non-refundable rental fee before I would waitlist anything for them.

Waitlisting adds another layer of possible problems and extra work. Often the waitlist will comes through without notification by Disney.

The points sit in limbo. If the wait list never comes through, you now have points that have to be used before they expire, and points don't age well. But you can't use those points for anything else, because then they won't be available if the wait list comes though. And, as a renter, you aren't going to want to pay unless the wait list comes though.

A wait list is a request to have a reservation filled if it becomes available. They don't contact the owner ahead of time to ask if they still want it. It is done automatically.

So, in order for an owner to put in a wait list for a renter, as mentioned, they would have to keep the points required to fill that wait list available when and if it comes through.

I think you have a better chance of finding an owner willing to do this for someone who is booking an alternative reservation because they will go regardless.

I also do not rent but it if I did, I would have no problem putting in a wait list as long as the renter paid for those extra points upfront, with no refunds if the wait list didn't fill. If the wait list was for less, again, no refunds from the original reservation. If the renter was willing to accept those terms, then I would proceed.

I've done waitlists for renters a couple of times (have one active right now), but those renters have always had an existing reservation and were just trying to move to another resort. I'd never give a renter a waitlist that didn't already have a reservation through me. I also don't refund points if there is a point difference.

I'd say you are out of luck getting an owner to set up a waitlist for you for free.
