Waitlist borrowed points?

I apologize if this has been explained - I tried a search and I'm still confused.

My family is considering a semi-last minute trip in October. We would be borrowing points from 2014 - our use year is February.

Not surprising, DVC is booked for many of the October dates we are looking at. Kind of expected this... but

I am wondering...can I waitlist a reservation when borrowing points? If yes, are there different waitlist cancelation policies? I'm confused first if I can even do this, and second when I'd need to make sure I cancel the waitlist to ensure the points are not lost.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

If you know you want to go, you can waitlist and authorize borrowing. They will only borrow to fill the waitlist so there is no penalty unless you actuAlly get a room and then decide to cancel.

If the wait list fills and,you then changed your mind, the points would expire January 31st, 2014,

Wow - expire 2014 - didn't realize that!

So, in theory if I were to book October (no waitlist) by using 2014 borrowed points I essentially move the expiration of these points from January 2015 to January 2014. I had always assumed if you cancel borrowed points they simply go back into that use year with no penalty just like a reservation not using borrowed points.

Good to know. Thanks.

Yes, that is correct. Borrowing is a final, irreversible transaction. Borrowed points that are not used expire at the end of the use year into which they were borrowed.

Yes, very good to know! Glad you found out by asking the question (instead of the hard way). :)

The best tip I ever got regarding understanding use of points was the following: Points can only move once.

So... If you borrowed points (for whatever reason) they have moved forward a year. They cannot move back from where the came. If you banked points, you cannot borrow them back or bank them again. They have already moved once.

I am hoping to be able to waitlist (if I can't get what I want) and then 'rent/pay' for points thought DVC. I don't know how that works, but I hope they can do that too. I will be 14 points short of what I need and I don't want to borrow.

I am trying to learn more about waitlisting since I have a feeling I might have to try it for the first time (wanting HHI for the first week of August).

Good Luck!

One-time use points (the ones you buy from Disney for $15/pt) cannot be used towards a waitlist. The only option you have to fill a waitlist is to use banked, current and/or borrowed points.

If there are any nights of your trip that are available, I *think* you can use one-time points towards booking those nights which would leave your remaining borrowable points available for the waitlist. The only risk is that if your WL doesn't fill and you cancel your trip, the one-time use points will expire as Feb 2013 points.

You could also waitlist as many nights as you have points for and then secure a cash room for the remainder. Then, you will at least have all of your nights if your WL fills. If it doesn't, you can cancel the cash reservation (within 7 days of arrival) without penalty.

This is a wonderful explanation! Thanks for this!

And don't forget you get a 25% DVC discount on rooms. We are doing this at the BDW. Booked one night cash reservation since we don't have enough points. Since we don't have enough points to waitlist, we're checking every day and will call if something opens up, and then buy the needed points...
