Waiting to board our plane and....

For the issue of a previous passenger having peanuts, they would board early so that they could wipe her seat and tray down completely before she sat down.
But this is a serious condition, right? Someone sitting 30 rows away can cause an allergic reaction. Why would they only wipe down the child's seat and tray? Shouldn't they need to wipe down the entire plane? If they trust the airline to do a good enough job cleaning, why do they need to wipe down her seat and tray?

And as for driving, there just are places you cannot drive all the time. With vacation schedules, it just is not feasible to drive to WDW for a vacation from the West.
And everyone is ENTITLED to FLY to WDW?

An airplane isn't the only place with a ventilation system like that. I work in an office building where the vast majority of offices and spaces don't have windows. Everything is circulated in the HVAC system.

But you can exit the building.

You've got a knack for putting words into people's mouths that were never said.

For what it's worth, many food allergies are misdiagnosed and their degree of severity inflated. :thumbsup2

I'm just going on what you said. If you don't want people to extrapolate on what you've said, don't say it.

Homeschooling is an option, but that kid still has to figure out life in public and I hope his family is doing their due diligence. Some parents of severely allergic kids are so risk adverse that I really fear for how these kids will be able to actually live. It's bad.

Also, luckily your friend has the income available to stay home and homeschool. Not everyone has that luxury. Then what?

Actually, those undiagnosed attention seekers are what makes it so hard for those with legitimate need, so I'm sure we both dislike them

Why do you make this assumption about other people? I knew a mom who had a son with severe allergies and instead of relying on the general public to bow and bend to her and her child's needs she homeschooled. She didn't use the public library because the risk of contamination on books; she made accommodations for her son; she didn't expect everyone else to do it for her.

It's called personal responsibility.
A public library and a plane are 2 totally separate things. Planes recycle the air. That is why you always hear about people getting sick on flights because of this. Library's and other public areas do not recycle the air. also when booking a flight, do they ever ask if you have any allergies? I never recall seeing that question. That family could have been standby.

When did the person on the plane with the peanut allergy turn into a child who would go into respiratory distress?

Anyways - I would comply, obviously. But I would think the person is an idiot for taking that chance.
Having a peanut allergy can put someone into respiratory distress. It could close up their throat which makes it almost impossible to breathe. That's why most of those with these kind of allergies carry an epipen.

For me, if my child was so allergic to peanuts that they have to make an announcement on the plane, I wouldn't be on a plane. I would not want to put my child's life in the hands of strangers. As a passenger, I would be fine eating my m and Ms when the plane landed.

I'm allergic to bees and wasps. If I don't have my epipen , I will die. I have to avoid situations that put my health at risk. I couldn't imagine walking into a closed room with a bee in it. I wouldn't do it.

It's been along time since I have been on a plane...they allow cats in the cabin?!

Yes many airlines allow cats and small dogs in the cabin. I've also seen a bee flying around. Can easily happen during boarding. I bet you will still fly though knowing this. Easy for you to just not be in a closed room.

Walk a mile in someone's shoes before you say you wouldn't fly if you or your child had an anaphylactic reaction to peanuts.

Just a thought. Could the child maybe wear some protection, such as a face mask of some sort if the issue is respiratory, and long sleeves/long pants, etc. if there are skin reactions?

Seems less intrusive than asking 100 other people to accommodate at the last minute.

I wouldn't trust strangers with my child's life.

Please keep in mind, an airplane is a different beast. You're dealing with recirculated air that is unlike being on the ground. That's why airlines are being overly cautious. Being in that environment creates the chance to trigger a reaction.

I still stick by my post #54 and so much so that I will repost.

Nothing is 100% safe. Just like with anywhere, it could be on the floor, armrest, etc. That already puts some risk, but why add to the risk by eating peanuts? That's why the airline pulls the peanut products and asks you to not eat them. It adds to the potential of having a reaction. Sure, I agree it is an inconvienence. You're asking hundreds of other people to accommodate one. But like I said before, in the scheme of life it's one flight. You're in a metal tube flying at 500mph at 30,000ft with nowhere to go - why add to the risk of someone getting ill if you can do your part? We are all in this together. Just my 2 cents.

If you read my reply, you would see that they weren't worried about things on trays 30 rows back. The only thing they were worried about was somebody opening a wrapper of an item that contained loose peanuts that could put peanut dust into the air.

In fact, this particular family would tell us all the time that they hated people who claimed something smeared on a tray 100 ft away would kill their family. This ruined the reasonable accommodations that some people asked for.

And yes, they are just as entitled to fly to WDW as any other person is.

You have every right to decide for yourself (or for your child) how much risk works for you.
You really can't know what others would do.
Me? I wouldn't risk it. I don't take potential serious medical dangers lightly. I wouldn't trust 100+ strangers to all be equally kind and cooperative.
I'd drive.

I agree with you and I would abide by the request. However, I still get to decide if I find the request reasonable, and as of yet, I don't.

I got your solution right here:

The lack of understanding and empathy in this thread is depressing. I'm out.

That's my favorite thing about allergy threads. It very quickly shows which people are quick to accuse someone of being selfish while being totally selfish themselves. Always good times.

Thankfully, we're done relying on the masses and if anyone wants to talk about peanut desensitization, I'm your girl.
