Waiting for the cable guy

I have a very flexible schedule and work at home alot and while it's a pain to wait for the cable guy (or the plumber or the handyman or the washing machine repair guy etc) who says "I'll be there between 12 - 5 ", it's do-able for me.

I always wondered how you folks with jobs completely outside the home do it? What do you do when the cable guy says, like he did for me, that he'll be there between 9 and noon, and then not show up. Do you take the day off?

Well the Sears repair guy will be out for the third time in a month this week, and they give us a window of 8-5. Basically I have to either see if DH can work from home, or wait longer for a Saturday appointment.

the cable guy is really good about windows. I can schedule the guy to come between 4-7 (I'm home by 4:30 in the summer if I don't have school that night)

Fortunately, my wife's work schedule (when she's in town) is pretty flexible, so she typically stays home for appointments like that.

Option B are weekend appointments, when possible and Option C (which we try to avoid) is my MIL staying at our house for the appointment.

From April-December, it's no problem. I live with my widowed father, he's 82 & long retired.

But from January-March, he rents a condo in Florida, so I have to take a vacation day (PTO day). So far, so good with this--everytime I've made an appointment for service--the water pump on the furnance, an electrician, the delivery of my computer--the technician was there. With the water pump service, the window was noon-to 5, he arrived at 11:55, was done by 12:30, replaced the whole unit, emptied the last bucket of water for me--that was the best!

We just never call on anyone and keep our fingers crossed!

But, for us, it would be vacation time used.

Once the guy gets here it won't take long - but what if I had taken the morning off and just couldn't take the afternoon off - guy's still not here - I'm glad it's not a problem, but I just don't see how the world can work like this!!! :confused3

Would any of you be upset if someone(repair man)who you were not expecting opened your garage door without even knocking and his job had nothing to do with anything inside?

I know im a bit off topic but this just made me think of it

Well the cable guy came yesterday - was here for 5 minutes and said he couldn't hook me up for a long reason that would be too boring to read - but turns out he was wrong, so again today I am...

....waiting for the cable guy -- THIS TIME BETWEEN 8 am and 9 pm!!!!!!

Did you ever hear of such a thing?????

This is off topic but a real pet peeve of mine.

I do home health care where I go to a homebound person's home to do their physical therapy there. I cover a large area in a rural county. I usually tell a person that I plan to be there, for instance, "at 10:30 but don't hold me to it. Between 10 and 11." And I can usually hit 10:30. And the nurses are able to be pretty good about this too when they have more unexpected happenings. And our people are homebound so really should have nowhere else to go.

I have no clue why a repaiman has a larger window. Do they not know their area? Do they have more emergencies than health care?:confused3 I don't get it.

I can accept the "between 8 and 12" or "between 1 and 5" --- but

Between 8 in the morning and 9 at night?????? C'mon!!!
