Hi, we are trying to figure out our day at AK and how best to use our FP+. If we get there at rope drop, how long do you expect we will wait for Kilimanjaro Safari if we walk there (briskly) right away? Do I need to use a FP+ first thing in the morning? We would like to do it twice, once without FP and once with, but touringplans.com is telling me there is a 20+ minute wait first thing in the morning without FP. We will be there 3rd week of August. Thanks for any advice!

We were there the third week of July 2014. We had a large family group of 14. We were RD, but slow. We basically got right on Safari. I mean, it takes a few minutes to get through the queue, but I think we only waited for two Safari vehicles before we boarded ours. Definitely nowhere close to 20 minutes (unless you include the walking to the ride).

I think you should be able to easily ride Safari in August first thing no problem and then use a FP if you wish. Maybe you could even ride it twice without a fp? Not sure. This is the timeframe we go every year. But we usually ride EE 4 or 5 times at rope drop and then head to the Safari at 10ish and use our fp.

In June 2012, we had to briskly walk through the queue at RD, and got on the 2nd bus, I think. We weren't running either, because DS was 6.

It will be a walk-on. But be advised that the "Rope Drop" time at AK is a very loose concept. The park gates often open up well before the stated time.
