There is a chance, about 50/50 right now, that I'll be able to join DH at Waikiki for a conference in October. Woot! I'd have to work during part of the day as well for most days of the conference, most likly, but I'll still have some time to myself. And maybe DH can join me in the evenings. :cloud9:

Any suggestions?

We're staying at the Sheraton Waikiki for the conference, not sure where if we go early.

I'm hoping I can learn to snorkel / snuba or maybe even sign up for a dolphin encounter while there. And if we have the time / money / opportunity, I really want to go to the Polynesian center and to the Byodo-In Buddhist Temple, and maybe the valley of the rainbows. Chances are only one of those will happen.

So what, besides Diamond Head, do y'all recommend within easy distance of Waikiki?

I say we should have a DIS meet. LOL! (hubby will kill me)

When are you going?

I know the bus will take you all over the island and they have different tours.

We are doing a luau this time (Didn't do one last time :().

We are doing the Bishop's Museum as well.

We are traveling with little ones--so our priorities are a bit different. We will be doing the Dole Pinapple plantation. WE are skipping the Polynesian Center. It is just so expensive and so I just don't think we will make it. But I have heard it is wonderful.

WE got the book Oahu Revealed which may be something you could get as it will give you tips for all over the island. :goodvibes

LOL Lisa! We're going to be there something like the 11th through the 16th or so. Of Oct. Assuming I can go. How about you?

Oooh, hadn't heard of that book. I also hadn't checked the prices on the Poly center, thanks for the heads up! And they have good buss transportation? Cool!

Well well -- we will be there at the same time. Are y'all staying on Waikiki as well? Maybe we could wave to each other on the beach or something. LOL!

The island's only about an hour wide...you could probably see everything in a couple days really. I love the Wakiki strip....my best memories, grabbing some Cold Stone Creamery ice cream and walking down the strip.

Cool, thanks Vamp!

Lisa -- I'll keep my eye open for you. Not that I'd recognize you, but who knows. :)

Oh, definetely see the Arizona memorial!!!! It's so emotional!

I don't live there anymore...I spent five years there, from 99-2003

OMG--forgot about Pearl Harbour. That is a must do. We are also doing the Missouri (coupon from the Entertainment book).

There's also the flea market/swap meet (I forget what they call it..) at the Aloha Stadium.

Nah, gonna skip Pearl Harbor. DH got to see that last time, and I saw that when I went to Oahu *years* ago.

Dang, the Poly center *is* expensive, isn't it? Ouch! $50-$200???

The price variance is for the evening shows and what dinner you order and how special treatment you want :).

But yes--just like going to Disney $$$$ wise.

So is the Poly Cultural Center worth the money, then? I've heard mixed reviews...

any sufing going on on the north shore is worth seeing!

If you have a car, try to get up to the Punchbowl. It's been awhile since I've been there but the National Cemetary of the Pacific is there, plus there is an area where you can have a picnic and have the most beautiful view of Waikiki. I think they are close to each other. I love it there! Also, driving up the coast to the North Shore is one of the most beautiful, scenic rides you will ever take IMO.

Really depends on what time of year you are going.

You can try--but my understanding is that winter is really the BEST time to see the really cool stuff.

CATSRULE: GREAT photo collection!
I visited my daughter for three weeks there (military wife).
Yes, must see USS Arizona. MUST climb Diamond Head (Go EARLY).
Must go to luau. (hokey, but just the experience is fun).
My daughter and husband spent just one night at Sheraton. Here are some pix:
