A friend just called and gave us free passes to the premier in our town :cool1: :cheer2:

ETA:

Well, we've seen it. True to the book much more so than the 70's movie was. Johnny Depp was creepy but amazing as always. Freddie Highmore is a fabulous actor as were the other children who were perfectly AWFUL just as they should be. The Oompah-Loompahs were hysterical and the movie is cinematically beautiful. Run to see it!

what age group is it geared toward?

My dd is going on Saturday with friends to see it and they are so excited! Thanks for the review! :teeth:

I'm glad you said it was good. I started having bad feelings about it from the commercials.

There were kids there as young as 3 who I don't think were capable of 'getting' it. The 7-12 year olds seem to love it. A lot of good humor in it, nothing that I think was offensive. There was one part that had implied bad language in it that was so funny the way they handled it. Extremely well done there.

As a protective parent I would have no trouble letting my 5 year old watch it but I don't know that should would truly 'get' it.

I'm the only one in the family that wants to see it! I may have to drag DD13 and DD10. It does look creepy, though... glad to hear it's good!

Also wanted to add....
They modernized the kids a bit really I guess they have to. I wasn't really thrilled with how they portrayed the Mike Teavee character as a violent video game addict, but I think it may be a necessary connection for kids raised today that could raise some good talking points and that is exactly how I would use it. But, I also think it inadvertently glamorizes that lifestyle and we as a society don't really need anymore of that.

okay, soapbox away ;)

Thanks so much for this review. I can't wait to see it!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read the book to my class each year, and then we always watched the movie. I always had a box/pack/etc. of Willy Wonka candy to give to each student to eat as they watched the movie. I always did this so they could see that the book is better than the movie and hopefully teach them that reading is always the better alternative. I have done the same thing with my girls now. I have read the book to them, and we have the old movie. I will be in line on Friday with them to see this movie. I am SOOOOO glad that their is no offensive language. I was concerned about that.

I can't wait!!!! Harry Potter finally coming out and Charlie and the Chocolate factory in the same weekend! WooHoo! I'm so excited now, I mean ever more!
