Just came back from 7 nights at the Villas at Wilderness Lodge, which we enjoyed very much!

We arrived Sat. Oct. 2 at around 7:30 PM after a long flight from Switzerland to Philadelphia and then on to Orlando, where we picked up a rental car and drove directly to the Wilderness Lodge.

Having checked in online, we were on our way to the Villas quickly. My request for a room near the elevators had been granted, the second request, pool view, was not, our rooms were facing the bus stopps.

When we arrived at our 4th floor 2 bedroom villa door, I was a bit surprised to see the door blocked by a mousekeeping cart, never seen one out that late in the evening at any Disney resort I stayed before. I pushed it aside (those things are really heavy) and opened the door. At first I thought that the room was already occupied, but then I saw that it was 2 mousekeeping ladies eating dinner(!) at the living room table. One of the looked over and just said "Sorry, not clean". I assumed she meant the room, closed the door and went back to the lobby, leaving the travel companions and the luggage in the entrance hall of the Villas.

I told the receptionist at the front desk that the room we got was still being cleaned which also seemed to surprise the receptionist and she said she would check with housekeeping. After a moment, she was back and printed keys for a new room. This one was quite a distance from the elevators but facing the woods towards Bay Lake, so I didn't say anything. And indeed, the view was great from this 3rd floor villa. Right in front of our windows was a clearing in the trees so we even could see Bay Lake.

The room was clean and in generally in good condition. I noticed some minor maintenance issues later but they weren't really affecting us.

- One bedside lamp and the telephone in the Master bedroom did not work.
- One power outlet to the right of the sofa had no power (lamp with the triangle was plugged in there)
- I had brought a WiFi router for my iPhone and iPad. When I connected it to the highspeed internet outlet under the table in the living room, there was no connection. I later noticed that there was a internet router under the couch, connected to the phone line. Once i plugged my wifi in there, the internet worked without a problem.

I informed the front desk about the maintenance issues but they were not fixed while we were there, maybe because we left the room early each day and usually arrived late, not sure if they are allowed to enter an occupied room if no one is there. When we checked out, I left a paper on the table noting what wasn't working once again.

One thing I found quite disturbing, not to say disgusting:

On several occasions during our stay, the hot tubs both at the villa pool as well as at the main pool had to be closed because a small child sh*t into it. And I don't mean just a bit, maybe leaking from swimming diapers, but a complete portion :scared1: But that was really the only low point of our stay!

We had a similar experience at VWL last month. We moved over to VWL from BLT, so I drove over around 8:00 to check in. When I did, the room was ready, and they gave me my keys. We went back to BLT, packed up and checked out. It was a couple of hours before we got back to VWL - when we went to our room, there was a purple key in the door, and I could here machine noise coming from the room. I opened up the door, and a guy was cleaning the carpet. He quickly stopped and left the villa, but I thought that was odd. Obviously there must be a breakdown of communication between the front desk and mousekeeping at the VWL.

Well, at least your guy was cleaning.

When I opened the door, one housekeeper was seating at the table, eating cereals from a paper bowl while the other walked out of the kitchen with a teacup in the hand.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind if they take a break and as long as they clean up after themselves they can eat dinner in the room. I just found it strange that they were still working at that hour and it seems that the CM at the front desk was surprised as well. Though I didn't mention to the front desk that they were eating, not sure if they are allowed to do that in the guest rooms and I didn't want them to get in trouble.

WOW I would have told the CM what they were doing! I would have to assume that they were not even suppose to be in the room since you were already given the keys. I worked in a hotel for over a year and the resort I worked in would NEVER allow employees to use rooms for break time! The cart in front of the door would have been a tip off.

I was once given keys to our cabin in FW and even before I arrived at the cabin my cell phone rang saying it was the front desk and they just realized the cabin was in the process of being cleaned and could we wait about 1/2 hour before going in, or come back to the front desk to get another cabin.

In the end I was glad that they gave us another room, because we got the nice woods and lake view.

Not sure how Disney updates their lists of which rooms are cleaned or not yet but one time we checked in at Old Key West in the afternoon and were told that our room was ready and were given the keys.

When I opened the door, it was obvious that housekeeping hadn't been there yet. Unmade beds, trash bin still full and wet towels in the bathtub. We just deposited our luggage in a spot where I figured it wouldn't disturb housekeeping too much and then called housekeeping which appologized but also said that the room hadn't been marked as cleaned on their list and that the front desk shouldn't have assigned us that room. They promised to send someone immedeatly but I told them no need to hurry, as we would be at the parks for a few hours anyway. When we came back later in the evening, the room was clean!

That is a pretty strange housekeeping situation, to be sure. As I read your comments I was thinking of that long, long trip you made to get there. I'm sure you were quite tired and the last thing you needed was a room readiness issue at that time of the evening. I'm glad that you ended up with a room that you liked out of it though.

We've found that the front desk isn't the place to go with maintenance issues. There is a button on the phones in the villas for maintenance and talking directly to them seems to be the best way to get action. Still, if the front desk is aware of your room maintenance issues they should have made sure that they were addressed. I agree that it sounds like there were a few staff communication issues during your stay.

And it sounds like the rest of your trip was a good one. I hope the charms of WL/VWL helped make the rest of your trip relaxing and enjoyable. :)

Our first DVC trip had similar issues, but in our case, it was not the fault of the front desk OR the housekeepers. The previous guest had decided to "self extend" after the room had been cleaned, and he had his suitcase open on the bed as well as a hand towel and a kitchen towel that he had used after the cleaning. Not sure how that could happen, but it did. We imediately went back to the check in and told them what the situation was. They did know that the guy's luggage had been there when the room was cleaned, but they were told by him that he was picking it up in half an hour. That was at noon. We arrived at 3, and he obviously had been back to the room (witness the used towels), but did NOT take his luggage. Instead, he opened it like he was still staying. When we went back to the front desk, they did some scurrying and put us in a different room, but also were in th4e process of charging his credit card for a cash night.:thumbsup2

I'm a pretty good plane sleeper, so I was quite rested. Actually, I found the situation rather comical, especially since I first thought that I had walked in on other guests staying in that villa... :-)

I called the front desk (I know that you don't call the real front desk of the hotel but some general call center somewhere on property) because the phone actually didn't have a maintenance button, but a "Weather" button which I hadn't seen for a long time on Disney resort phones.

Oh, one other thing:

The message light was blinking on the phone all the time. When I pressed the message button, it said "There are no voice messages, there are other messages, to retrieve them, press 0".

When I pressed 0, I was connected to a CM who said that I probably had a special message and to retrieve it, I should hang up, pick up the receiver again, wait for the dial tone then press the message button again. I then would be prompted for my room number and password, where my last name would be the password.

I followed the instructions but never was prompted for the room number or password and got the same message as before. I then hung up and didn't try it anymore.

I guess it was some kind of character message for our friends who were on their honeymoon but it's still strange that it didn't run as a regular voice mail message.

On a positive note, on the second day, they delivered a nice pralines box and a Happy Honeymoon card with a photo pass discount for our friends. That was a nice and unexpected surprise!

All in all, those were only minor issues and didn't affect the enjoyment of our vacation at all and I will happily stay at VWL again any time!

How lovely, a Disney honeymoon!

Nice to hear you had all had a nice time!

How lovely, a Disney honeymoon!

The accommodation was our wedding gift to them from us. Though, we were so selfish to keep the Master bedroom for ourselves... :-)

The praline box was made entirely of chocolate as well and had the Wilderness Lodge logo on the cover.

That's definitely gross about the pool. Remind me not to get into it this December.

And the nighttime encounter with mousekeeping is also strange. There was definitely a mixup.

Glad the rest of your trip was good.

I completely understand, we always vacation w/ friends & family and I gave up the master once and only once, not happening again! :lmao:

That's strange about not having a housekeeping/maintenance button on the phone (it's the same button). But I'd say strange is a good description of most of the issues you described.

What a great attitude! It didn't sound like you thought these were major issues. But I think most people here do want to hear the good, bad and ugly when it comes to DVC so we appreciate you sharing your experiences. :)

I would have let the front desk know...if it's allowed, they wouldn't get in trouble. And if it's not allowed, they were doing something wrong, and it would be right to let their bosses know.

If I remember correctly, there was a housekepping button on the phone, but I thought I had seen a separate maintenance button on those phones as well. But maybe I'm mixing it up with the phones at Disneyland Paris.
