The Miami Herald has found that nearly 2,100 Florida voters - many of them black Democrats, could be wrongly barred from voting in November.

A Florida Division of Elections database lists more than 47,000 people the department said may be ineligible to vote because of felony records. The state is directing local elections offices to check the list and scrub felons from voter rolls.

But a Herald review shows that at least 2,119 of those names -- including 547 in South Florida -- shouldn't be on the list because their rights to vote were formally restored through the state's clemency process.

Me thinks his big brother is helping him pirate:

Methinks they just haven't gotten the 2 lists together. Herald will always blow things out of proportion if given the smallest chance.

Hey VH, in some state if you commit a felony you give up your right to vote. This has been going on for years, so why is this a problem now?

so why is this a problem now?

Because at least 2,119 people -- including 547 in South Florida -- shouldn't be on the list because their rights to vote were formally restored through the state's clemency process.

So even if you take the 547 away that still leaves 1572 that shouldn't be on the list in the first place.

Assuming you believe the Herald.

If those people's rights were restored to them, fine, but if they weren't then I still don't see a problem.

If their voting rights have been restored, and voting is that important to them, then all they would have to do is reregister before the deadline. Of course, my question is, would they be notified that they've been removed from the voter rolls?

I agree with Talking Hands -- someone just hasn't cross-referenced the two lists. I see similar things happen all the time in private business; you think things like this wouldn't happen in government??

THis is OLD news...they were trying to fix the problem before the election...aparently this newspaper couldn't get the story straight.

How is this is "Vote Rigging"? It couldn't possibly be an honest mistake could it? You say many of the list are black Democrats? How many? Are these the the majority of the list? Are there white republicsa effected too? If so, how many?

Unless you can answer these questions, you cant say this is vote rigging, but you can leap to unsubstantiated conclusions after reading an article posted by a newspaper well known for sensationalism.

 Can't you find better things to do with your time then constantly think of threads that either bash Bush and/or our Country?? It's so sad that you can't...

Florida restores thousands of felons' rights
Friday, June 18, 2004 Posted: 11:48 AM EDT (1548 GMT)

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- Thousands of ex-felons will be able to vote, serve on juries and take jobs with state-licensed firms after having their civil rights restored by Gov. Jeb Bush and the Cabinet, sitting as Florida's clemency board.

Bush announced Thursday that state officials completed a review this week of 125,000 cases included in a lawsuit filed against the state on behalf of felons released from prison between 1992 and 2001.

About 22,000 of them were found to be eligible to have their rights automatically restored. Of those, about 11,000 have already regained their privileges.

Of the remaining 103,000, about half probably will be able to get their rights restored if they go through a hearing process, although it's not clear how many will seek to do so.

Many of the remaining 50,000 or so will not be eligible to have their rights restored for a variety of reasons.

"Some are back in prison, some have committed other crimes that make it such that they can't get their rights back," Bush said. Many others may have died or moved out of state.

A Tallahassee judge told the state last year to go back and assist those prisoners who completed sentences over the 10-year period because they had not been helped by the Department of Corrections, which failed to provide them with an application to regain civil rights as they left prison.

"We've gotten through it and it was a good thing to do," Bush said.

Besides the 125,000 cases covered in the lawsuit, Bush also said officials restored civil rights to another 20,861 in the last year and reduced the backlog of cases to just over 8,000.

Florida is one of six states that does not automatically restore civil rights to people who have completed their sentence on a felony conviction.

An attorney for the ACLU, Randy Berg, said the clemency panel's work still represents only a fraction of some 600,000 Floridians who he believes are disenfranchised.

"That figure is not going to go away until the governor and Cabinet make restoration automatic," said Berg, also executive director of the Florida Justice Institute. "(And) that ain't going to happen."

Berg said 30 percent of the all felons leaving prison qualify for having their rights restored. The severity of a crime is a determinant in eligibility for regaining one's rights.

The number of potential former felons denied the opportunity to vote has been part a particularly incendiary political issue in Florida since the 2000 presidential election when Republican George W. Bush, the older brother of the governor, carried Florida's decisive 25 electoral votes by 537 votes of more than 6 million cast.

Ha ha ha…great title….I guess people who don’t live in this country think it’s “BIG” news scoop. Stuff like this happens all of the time…from dog catcher to presidential elections. A lot of it is even straightened out on the day of the election. My brother is a lawyer, on election day he volunteers at a local election board. People come in with all kinds of stories of mix-ups. It all gets worked out.

Thanks for the laugh I had a rough day.

Floridaminnie- Thanks for posting the whole cnn piece.

God Bless America!

What I will NEVER understand is if you don't believe him, respect him or believe him than WHY DO YOU STILL POST TO THIS THREADS???

Can someone please answer me?

He baits you and you respond, do you think it will change his mind or his opinions?

yeah, but when there is a more credible news agency (even though I personally don't like cnn) that discounts him...it's kind of funny.

With all due respect, Robinrs, I believe your statement should be directed at the op also. These types of threads are daily occurances and lack of respect, baiting, and attempts to change beliefs come from all those who participate.

Seems to be the name of the game. Makes for interesting lurking.

Maybe that's why I try to lay low...;)
