I'm sick of getting slammed ever month with our phone bill. I'm seriously thinking about switching to Vonage. Does it work good? How hard or easy is it sign up? TIA

I have it, no problems. The sound quslity is fine.

We've had it for just over a year now. We pay just under $17 a month because we're on the 500 minute plan. We're not on our home phone much, so it works for us.

We've had no issues at all. Quality is great. Love that we can get the voicemail emailed to us.

Sign up is very easy. We only had an issue because our phone company wouldn't release our phone number so we ended up just getting a new one. However, we have referred several people and none of them have had any issue with the number transfer.

We have Sunrocket which saved us a whole bunch on phone bills - we signed up for the one year plan and found it to work great for us. Vonage had too many extra costs for us.

We have it and LOVE it!!! Nothing like going from a $70 phone bill down to $17. :cheer2:

I was just wondering... on all the vonage commercials, it says in small print at the bottom of the screen "vonage 911 doesn't work like regular 911" or something like that.

What does this mean???? Do they have their own emergency number or something??

Remember that 911 Dialing service will not function in the event of a broadband or power outage or if your broadband, ISP or Vonage phone service is terminated.

Oh yeah, I didn't even think about power outages. HMMMMM I'm gonna have to re-think this change. What's the deal with 911, how is it different?

I just signed up today. Very easy to sign up and the sound is great. I'm doing the $14.99 a month with the 500 minutes. The way they explained the 911 thing is like you call their 911, they transfer it to the real 911 and the real 911 calls you right back to see what your emergency is. That is the way I understood it. Since I never had a corded phone in the house anyway, either with or without Vonage, if there was a power outage, I would still be out of luck if I needed 911.

What are the extra costs? What is Sunrocket, I've never heard of it?

I know In my area it transfers directly to the 911 dispatch center for our area.

Here is info from the site:
Most of our customers (other than WiFi and Softphone customers) have access to either basic 911 or Enhanced 911 (E911) service. With E911 service, when you dial 911, your telephone number and registered address is simultaneously sent to the local emergency center assigned to your location, and emergency operators have access to the information they need to send help and call you back if necessary.

Customers in locations where the emergency center is not equipped to receive your telephone number and address have basic 911. With basic 911, the local emergency operator answering the call will not have your call back number or your exact location, so you must be prepared to give them this information. Until you give the operator your phone number, he/she may not be able to call you back or dispatch help if the call is not completed or is not forwarded, is dropped or disconnected, or if you are unable to speak. As additional local emergency centers become capable of receiving our customers' information, Vonage will automatically upgrade customers with basic 911 to E911 service. Vonage will not give you notice of the upgrade.

Certain customers do not have access to either basic 911 or E911. If you don't have access to basic 911 or E911 your 911 call will be sent to the Vonage national emergency call center. A trained agent at the emergency call center will ask for the name, telephone number and location of the customer calling 911, and then contact the local emergency center for such customer in order to send help. Examples of situations where 911 calls will be sent to the Vonage national emergency call center include when there is a problem validating a customer's address, the customer is identified with an international location, or the customer is located in an area that is not covered by the landline 911 network. In addition, if you use a WiFi or SoftPhone, due to the portable nature of these Devices, your 911 calls will be routed to the Vonage national emergency call center. Emergency personnel do not receive your phone number or physical location when your 911 call is routed to the Vonage national emergency call center.

You must register with Vonage the physical location where you will utilize Vonage phone service (Service) for each phone line. Also note that if you move your device to another location, you must register your new location – it's easy – just log into the features section of your web account and follow the instructions. If you do not register your new location, any 911 call you make may be sent to an emergency center near your old location. You will register your initial location of use when you subscribe to the Service. This process can take several hours, and you will receive a confirmation email once 911 Dialing has been activated for your initial location or for a newly registered location. Regardless of what address you register for a WiFi or SoftPhone, emergency calls you make from these devices will be routed to the Vonage national emergency response center.

Remember that our 911 Dialing service will not function in the event of a broadband or power outage or if your broadband, ISP or Vonage phone service is terminated.

Please see our Terms of Service for more information about our 911 Dialing feature.

I am not sure what you mean by extra costs? the router & the phone adaptor you mean?

i already had a router & I got a full rebate on the adaptor...

I've had Vonage since 8/04. Vonage service it's self has been mostly trouble free. There has been times where their voice mail system or web site have had issues but that's been about it. As mentioned by someone else, no power no phone, you can solve that to some extent by getting a battery backup UPS system, depening on how much you connect to it you could get 10 minutes to a few hours of time where the service would still work, assuming all the other networking hardware is also connected to the UPS. Also, if you have a security system that's connected to your phone line to call in alarms you might want to check with your alarm company and then know you want to use VoIP service, they might not support it.

The same goes for your internet connection, how reliable is it? It goes down and you loose your phone also. With Vonage you can set up a phone number that calls will forward to in case Vonage detects your connection is down, or it will just go to voice mail. Also, if the performance of your internet connection isn't very good you'll have degraded phone call quality.

If you're currently using DSL for your broadband access you might need to keep your phone line anyway. Most phone companies require you have at least basic phone service in order to get DSL, not a problem if you're using cable for your internet access.

Just remember, this isn't a regulated service, it can go down for hours or days and there's nothing you can really do about it, you can't call the FCC or local state agencies.

You might also want to check out www.viatalk.com, they've been getting good reviews in the VoIP section of www.dslreports.com.

I've been considering Vonage, but looked into Sunrocket too. Sunrocket seems to be getting a lot of complaints about the service being down. I have to have my service reliable for work. Does Vonage have a big problem with this too?
And yes, my internet access is very reliable.

We have Vonage and love it! We had a problem with Verizon switching over our number when we first got Vonage. Verizon keep "misplacing" our order. This went on for 9 months. So we had two phone services we were being charged for. Vonage was so wonderful that didn't charge us a cent for those nine months. Thier customer service is outstanding!

Also they have a feature that is included in their service for when your power or internt goes out that can automaticlly send all your calls to your cell phone. We have it set up to ring the house phone as well as my cell phone even when everything is fine. It's great knowing that I can call my family on the other side of the country and not have to worry about a big phone bill! I think with our total with taxes and fees is $27.86 a month, that in itself is heaven to me!

I LOVE Vonage!!!! :thumbsup2 It has been super easy to use and I LOVE the price. I was converted to Vonage after I got the cable internet and the guy installing it told us about it.

I HATE HATE HATE SBC (which is now owned by AT&T  ) . In October I changed the long distance features with SBC's service to some new plan that was supposed to cost 40 bucks, of course after the taxes and their tact on fees it ended up costing 75 bucks.... :sad2: I can't believe JUST a local line with no features on it costs just as much as Vonage with everything!

Also, you can set it up where you can take your home phone with you when you travel! Any hotel with broadband access can be hooked up to your phone .

I've had it for about 2 months.. went for the $14.99 plan (with those minutes & my Cell phone minutes, we have plenty)... I did have some issues at first, found out that I it was the firewall in my router.. occasionally (once a week or so) the reception sounds like you are under water.. I've been told it's because of the MHZ of the phones I use are the same frequency as that of my wireless router... but it's not that big of a deal so I haven't invested in a new set of phones....
