Hi guys,
I know there are tons of new folks here on the DIS VMK board who don't know us, but there may still be some around that recognize my username and remember me from VMK as BlueMinnie.
I've been torn over whether or not to share our story, but I think it may stand as a helpful warning to others, especially parents.
When my hard drive crashed in August, my VMKing came to an end. I had gotten a bit bored with everything except chatting with my DIS VMK buddies anyway and they were all here on the DIS without those annoyng filters. I let it go.
DD, age 10, however, loved it and continued playing throughout the fall. Her interest was in creating rooms and making "friends". Some of you were kind enough to let her hang out in DIS rooms. Thank you.
DS, age 12, played occasionally, mostly games.
Our IP was banned until 2015 this past month. Let me tell you why.
DD began hanging out in rooms where completely inappropriate "talk" was the norm. What began as boyfriend/girlfriend talk moved into any and all sexual innuendo they could think of to get around the filters. She did not tell me about this change. I had played all summer, everyday, and never witnessed this sort of thing. She hung out with me in DIS rooms a good bit. I trusted her judgment.
I was wrong.
Hanging out in private rooms and making "friends" with people who found this sort of behavior acceptable made her curious to try it out. She created a boy character and tried out this kind of talk. Thats when her conscience kicked in and she told me how guilty she felt and that she wanted to get rid of her friends list and get away from this.
To say I was shocked would be the understatement of the century.
I never witnessed anything like this on VMK and I am relatively sure many of you here have never seen this either. Please be aware for your kids' sake that this is a dirty little secret in these private rooms.
She was apparently reported in the interim of her confession to me and my attempt to check out the situation for myself and discovered that our IP has been banned until 2015. Just as well. She will not be returning. I do feel bad for my son, who just logged on to play fireworks or the pirate game and will not be able to do so.
But that's our story. Please watch your kids carefully, even on VMK, even if you've never encountered this.
