Hi all. I'm about going crazy here waiting out the 4+ looong months until our Land/Sea vacation. I know this board basically focuses on the cruise portion, so I hope you don't mind if I include the land too. I know I eagerly look for land/sea reports so I hope my experiences help someone else.

Let's start at the beginning. Last year the company I had worked for for 10+ years was purchased by a large German company, and I was out of a job:confused3. Not to fear though, because my severance package took me through Halloween, and we had a big family trip to POR planned the week after Labor Day :cool1: ! Of course, as per usual I was the designated planner, which stressed me out far too much:scared1: because family members kept deciding at the last minute to join us. Let's just say that our meals were booked and rebooked several times before we landed on our final total of 16 people, no small feat during free dining :headache:. Everyone had a fabulous trip, but then it was back to reality. Out of work, I returned home to reality, and a job hunt:surfweb: .

A little about us - we are a family of 3 including DH and DS4 who is an only but not necessarily by choice. DH is a police officer who works a rotating shift schedule that moves his hours forward by 8 every week, and changes his days off any other week. This means that there is only one week every 3 months that we can act like a "normal" family - both work during the day, come home, have dinner, and spend the weekend together. Needless to say, we enjoy our vacation time, and make it a priority over other things. We cut back on what we need to in order to go, and not only go, but go in style. I was raised in a frugal family, and it sometimes bugs me out to see what our upfront costs are before we leave, but I never end up regretting a single thing.:cloud9:

So, back to reality in NJ - it's the week after we've come home, and I'm in a world of visits to unemployment, recruiters, resumes etc. Imagine my surprise when DH decides that now is the time to book a land/sea vacation....albeit 15 months away:cool1: ! Within a day, I have the reservation all taken care of - miracle of miracles (or perhaps the fact that we are booking the darn trip so far in advance that we might possibly be the only ones on it at this point :rotfl: ) - we manage to snag one of the category 7 staterooms with the clear balcony:banana:   . When I try to express my joy to DH, he just gives me a blank stare until I explain to him that there are only 4 rooms like this on the entire ship. Then, he joins my happy dance and we act like idiots :dance3: for the next few minutes until the reality that we have 15 months in NJ until we get to see the coveted room...:guilty:

Continuing on, at this point I am extraordinarily excited to be going on such a great trip, but have yet to find a job. Finally, at the end of October, I sign up with some temp agencies and begin working immediately. I landed a long term assignment the week before Thanksgiving, and have been there happily ever since :lovestruc . Fortunately, DH has great benefits, so there is no worry on that side of things. Unfortunately, we are climbing out from a mountain of debt so it is critical that I show up to work every day. The company is very generous with holidays though, that I don't get paid for, so we've had our share of budgeting challenges. The end of this year is going to get real interesting - DH and I are both losing weight, so clothes will be a factor (we rarely shop for ourselves), we have the holidays to buy gifts for (again - we don't buy for ourselves, but DS4 and our large family all get gifts). Now, in addition to those expenses, we have to figure in spending money for the trip and the fact that I will be missing 8 days of work (we leave the day after Thanksgiving, and come back on a Monday). I've started making some extra $$ with ChaCha, hoping to use that strictly for our spending money on vacation.

Immediately after we booked this trip, my mother (henceforth known as "Grammy") decides that she would love to take a Disney trip with her little "prince" and begins to work on my father, "Papa", to convince him to come with us. Now, Papa is one of the, well, to put it nicely, most frugal men on the planet, even though he doesn't have to be. When we were growing up, the one time we went to WDW we camped in Kissimmee. In a tent. In March:scared: . I remember driving trips where we would drive until very late at night in order to find a motel for the night with a rate low enough to please him, and they were not the nicest of places. I immediately knew that there was no possible way that he would be convinced to go with the price of a balcony cabin, so I found the cheapest guarantee package and presented him with that. Little did I know that cost was no object when it came to his grandson, the little prince:wizard: ! DS4 is their only grandchild, and quite possibly could stay that way. Therefore, they spoil that child rotten, giving to him all that they could not give us when we were young. Realizing that this was the last opportunity to go on an off week before DS4 begins kindergarten next year, Papa called to say come on over and book it. Then, while I was at the computer he confessed his secret desire to stay at a monorail resort and, taking complete leave of his senses in a moment of insanity, tells me to book them the same package we got - category 7, staying at the Polynesian!

After I picked poor Grammy off the floor, because this surely could not possibly be the man that she has been married to for the past 35 years, we filled out the form and hit the button. It was booked:cool1: and they were coming with us! Bizarrely enough, they were assigned a room 2 doors down from us. I haven't decided yet if that is good or bad:rolleyes1 ...

Onboard for your TR!! We di our 2nd land/sea vacation this past May and had a fantastic time! Can't wait to hear more!!

I'm in! I am looking forward to hearing about both.

Isn't it amazing how our parents are so different when it comes to their grandchildren? My parents took us to Disney once when my brother and I were children and we spent only 1 day in MK, that was it! Now they spend their winter in FL and live only 12 miles to Disney and never go to WDW. Last winter, they begged me to send my kids on an airplane so they could take the grandchildren to Disney World because they have not been to WDW since 1981 and wanted to go with their grandchildren. I agreed to go with the kids on the plane (I was not sending them alone on a plane with strangers). My Dad was like a kid again. He had the time of his life. They took us to SeaWorld, AK, MK, and Epcot. It was an amazing memory, I am sure your parents will be the same way. The memories are just priceless. Now they are already working me to go again this year. My mom says, "Southwest is opening airfare for February Vacation on August 21st." My Mom does not know I booked this cruise. I am afraid to tell her because I can't do the Disney trip in Feb and the cruise in April. I am waiting for the right time to break the news to her, plus I have not 100% given up on the idea of 2 Disney trips.

Okay, so you probably didn't expect this TR to take turn into a discussion about parent's spending habits. However, your post reminds me of a few things. One, I remember as a kid wondering around the food court (sightseeing, I guess) only to be told "nevermind, we have food at home." WHAT! That was torture. Also, now that my dad has retired he is a bit more adventureous with his money and not as concerned about how I spend my money.

Thanks - we can't wait!

Believe me, my father is absolutely a different person around his grandson. He has actually asked me to take him out of preschool on Fridays EVERY WEEK, just so that he can spend that day with DS4.

Also, now that my dad has retired he is a bit more adventureous with his money and not as concerned about how I spend my money.

Did you grow up at my house? :rotfl2: I remember spending freezes from September-December - we were allowed to buy things, but they were put away for Christmas. My parents booked their trip in December, added on the dining plan in March, and I still haven't wrapped my brain around the whole thing! Of course, he is giving me a hard time about the $184/night suite that I booked for the night we arrive in Orlando - even though it fits all 6 of us and I'm paying with Marriott Rewards Certificates so it's not costing a penny:confused3 !

So, now we have our rooms booked and the trip is actually happening. What next? Convincing DSis to come with us of course:goodvibes .

DSis is a waffler. Noncommittal. Unable to make a decision to save her life...get the picture? She's in her early 30's, was sharing an apartment with a friend from work, and didn't have a lot of cash to spare at this point. I asked her to join us anyway, and spent the next two weeks running numbers....I got my parents to agree to only charge her the 3rd person rate in their room.

Not good enough for Waffle Girl.

I broke down the amount of money she needed to save per week to go - it was something like $20 at that point.

Still couldn't get an answer :confused3 .

Finally, my mother offered to let her work off the trip in trade. Yep - my sister became an indentured servant:rotfl2: . Every weekend she goes to my parent's home and cleans for them. In exchange, they pay her $10 an hour on her "account". She doesn't have to pay anything out of pocket, and she gets to go on a fabulous vacation with us!

Poor girl is already plotting to swap spaces with DS4, having him sleep in their room so that she doesn't have to put up with Papa's snoring.:rolleyes1

All drama aside, I am very pleased to be going on a family vacation with my side of the family. We've been on several trips with DH's family, and I was beginning to feel left out. Still not sure how Papa will be on the cruise though - he's been on 2 cruises with other lines, and honestly feels that the cruise ship is just a mode of transportation! I'm sure to be facing a battle when I tell him I'm staying on the ship in Nassau...

 Okay, so here's the final cast:

Me - 36, true lover of all things Disney
DH - 38, loves Disney and cruises, but not necessarily together...
DS - 4, loves WDW, especially the train and monorail, but he's not to sure about this whole cruise thing...
Grammy - Will even go on Splash Mountain with her grandson:lovestruc
Papa - will travel anywhere for his grandson:love:
DSis - 34, after initial hesitation is ready to go NOW:banana:

So, now everyone is booked and we just have 11 more months to wait. And wait. And wait some more:rolleyes1

Nah - there's always research to be done, magic to be made, right? After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, and the steady stream of birthday celebrations in the first couple months of the year, I began to look at transportation options.

Let me explain our normal situation. DH hates to fly.:scared1: I hate to sit in a car from NJ to FL, and I especially hate it when trying to keep an active 4 year-old entertained. :headache: In addition, DH drives fast:eek: , and usually gets away with it because he's a police officer. Over the years, we've come up with a compromise. I buy plane tickets for DS and myself, and DH drives straight down and meets us in an offsite hotel so that he can rest for the evening and we can start our first day in the World happy and ready to go. This year, DH's schedule is a little crazy - he's on midnight shift the week leading up to this trip, and the earliest he can leave is 4am Saturday.

Did I mention we're travelling Thanksgiving weekend? Plane tickets are crazy, so I did some research :surfweb: and came up with this fabulous adventure - 4 of us (Me, DS, Grammy & Papa)will leave NJ the morning after Thanksgiving and head to Lorton VA to board the AutoTrain. DH and DSis will drive down and meet us in Orlando Saturday night:grouphug: . Sunday we will check into the Poly and truly begin our vacation. Great!

Almost great - DSis is a bit better off financially now than she was last year, and would greatly prefer taking the train with the rest of us. I don't feel like DH could drive alone the entire way this time (he'd be working from midnight to 4am and then leaving directly from work). My thought was to exchange spots with my sister, but that means that now DH and I would be travelling seperately from our son, and I'm not sure how much I'd like that. Plus, would DSis and my parents be able to handle him well enough if he had a meltdown (DS loves trains, but I'm afraid the excitement might get to him)?:guilty: This decision is still in progress, since the train tickets can still be changed...

The AutoTrain cool! You'll have to tell us how that goes. We've considered that option in the past. That would be a good option for my DMiL who has a DS confined to a wheelchair and would need the convenience of her own van.

Honestly, I couldn't believe how reasonable it was! I found a discount code with the Orlando Magicard, so for 3 adults, 1 child and a car it came to $806 round trip. I was guessing $200 a person for airfare, and then we would have had to pay $70 pp for Disney transfers to the cruise! It's really only a 4 hour drive from NJ to Lorton VA, so this seems like a reasonable way to save a little money and gain the convenience of not having to stress over the amount of baggage we are bringing with us (plus, we can get more souveniers:rotfl: ), and have the benefit of having our own car. The trick I've found with the Autotrain is to book it as far in advance as possible - the price goes up as it gets closer to the date, much like the Disney cruise.

Well, yikes! Here I am 2 weeks before we leave and I haven't posted an update in months! Possibly because I'm so far behind in organizing things I feel guilt about even being on the Dis...;)

I somehow managed to discover the wonderful Creative DISigns board, and got some customizations done for shirts. Now our entire group will have matching shirts at least on our Magic Kingdom day, and the day we go on the cruise. DH is thrilled to be the dorky matching people:rotfl: . DS wants to wear a shirt with his name on it every single day.:confused3

Unfortunately, as predicted I have been the only person doing anything for this trip and I have been a slacker, slacker, slacker. I found transfer paper on ebay, which finally arrived (had it delivered to Papa's house directly, because I put him in charge of printing the transfers....he's retired. He has time.) Grammy bought shirts on Sunday, so the plan is for us to begin assembling shirts this weekend. We still don't have fish extenders, let alone gifts to put in them. I've also been working on a custom guidebook that I need to finalize this weekend if I want to print it and bind it at Staples. Then, there's the clothing dilemma - DH has lost 60lbs since May, and I've lost 30. We need to see what does and does not fit us anymore...

Oh well, at least we have our transportation finalized. DH's father will be down in FL for the next month staying with his mother, because her husband just passed away. He decided to join us on our return trip on the Autotrain, because our return date was really inexpensive. One problem - you cannot travel on the train without a vehicle, so we had to add him to our reservation. In addition, DSis is now living comfortably with us, and had decided that she would like to swap with me....now Grammy, Papa, DSis and DS will be travelling the Autotrain roundtrip, while I will be joining my DH on the lovely 17 hour drive to FL. Must be love:hug: . Amtrak made DSis and I actually go to the station together to change the names on our tickets - and it turned out to be an unnecessary trip because the agent didn't care if we were both there or not.

Next point of stress: Thanksgiving. DH is working midnights that week, and is hoping to go into work at 4pm so that he can guarantee that he will be able to leave at 8am Friday. If not, it is entirely possible that he will be forced to work until 4pm that day, throwing a giant wrench in our schedule. My plan then would be to drive until 11pm, stop in a motel for the night, and then wake up early to complete the drive to FL. There is no way that I would trust DH to drive overnight if all of his sleep for the past 24 hours was in a car! Wish me luck!

Yeah! Two weeks how exciting. I think since time is ticking you are stressing, but don't worry it will all come together. IF I do not speak to you before youleave, Have a fabulous trip and do not forget to write all about it right here, I will be waiting.

Congrats to you and Dh on the weight loss! Try and not get to stressed. Can't wait for the TR. ANy pics of the family??
