Vittles A Go-Go: Hicks on Holiday - Update 2/14/09, pg 18 COMPLETE!

Love reading your report!!

I'll have to check my ADR's for this September, but I am almost positive that I booked the Disney Play N Dine at MGM. I wasn't too excited about booking it, so I can't remember if I actually did or not. Sounds like I may need to make SURE that I DO NOT have it for our meal there.

What did the baby eat? We will be taking our DS1 and they told me that he could eat from our plates, buffets, etc.. But at the buffet, can I get him a plate of his own? I figure we'll end up buying all of his meals, b/c most of the time, I can't feed him what we have b/c it's too spicy, or hard to chew, etc..

They said I could buy him a DDP package, but I'd have to get him a ticket too. Well, that's a lot of $$$ for a 1 YEAR OLD, so I'll just purchase his meals. It's the least that I can do, since the rest of us are dining for free!!

I think breakfast at H & V might be good.

Babycakes wasn't too much into eating until she was almost 18 months,
so she nibbled on our stuff.
Yes, you can definately get him a plate at buffets.
You can even ask for an empty plate for him at any restaurant,
and share what you have.

If he doesn't eat very much,
I wouldn't waste $ on either the DDP for him OR extra meals for him.
There really is a lot of food.

On our first trip we brought a lot of those Gerber Graduate type things
to supplement our dd who was not quite 1yo.
(fruit cubes, veggie cubes, etc.)
And things like cheesy crackers, etc.
Things that didn't need heating.
Though I have heard of restaurants heating baby food up,
just not sure if they WDW ones do it.

If he eats a lot, you may have to order an a la carte item here or there,
if you don't have any older children to share with the baby.
Ours could NEVER finish their meals,
so baby could have eaten like a queen
if she had decided she liked food. LOL

Thanks for reading!

Ok, so in the interest of truth, there it is.

You now know "the rest of the story." LOL

More later!

lol back seat trip report writers....love it! I appreciate the info about a one year old also! We will have my 1 year old grandson with us! Thank you DisneyMom5 and CruisingCamper.

Thanks for the reply.

As far as the baby, he does eat pretty well, although we still supplment with baby food too, like the graduate meals and a few jars every now and then. We are also on the Deluxe DDP, so I am pretty sure that we'll have more than enough food, I was just hoping the servers were nice about asking for extra plates.

Thanks again, and I am so glad that you are brave enough to go to WDW with 7 kids!! I have a cousin who won't even do it with 3!!!

One thing about a big family, everybody's got an opinion, and then multiply by 9. LOL

Glad to be of service.

WDW is super great with little kids.
We just said "This one will be sharing with me, can I have an extra plate,"
and they didn't bat an eye.

Oh, and your cousin needs to take the plunge!
If we let the fact that we have a large family stop us,
we would a) never go anywhere, and
b) perpetuate the myth that big families are backwards and poor and deprived.
Can't let that happen! ;)

Happy planning! :wizard:

Sept. 2007
The Hicks Go to Chef Mickey's,
There Was a Really Big, Really Cool Thunderstorm,
and Then There Was That Incident
Involving a Really, Really Big Mouse....

[Sorry I have taken so long to update. Life...and all that jazz.]

So, when we last left the Hicks they had lunched in the wilds of
Animal Kingdom.

As Animal Kingdom closes early,
and was pretty much devoid of TS credit choices at that time,
(which apparently has been fixed now)
the Hicks decided to plan a dinner at a resort for that night.

Our family had eaten there on our last trip, and really liked it.

We also thought it would be a good way to ensure that the cousins
got there moment with Mickey without waiting in line.

I was unsure whether we would stay till park closing or not,
so I made the ADR for 6:45 pm.
Later, when I panicked, and thought that was too late,
I called back to change it.
The earliest they still had available was 9:45 PM!!! :scared1:

I politely declined, and decided to just deal.

We ended up leaving the park during the parade
(THAT was a joy, let me tell ya. More on that during my trip report.)
so had a little bit of time to kill before dinner.

So, we did what any self-respecting Hick would do,
and headed back to the room for an air-conditioned nap.

Ahhhhhhhh.

How refreshing.

We managed to rouse everyone in time,
and we headed off to the bus for Magic Kingdom.

Thus far in my resort to resort travels
I have stuck to the resorts on the monorail.

This eliminates the need to go to a park and trade buses,
or find the other resort while hauling 7 sweaty children in our 15 passenger,

(which would have had 13 people in it if we had driven somewhere this trip)

OR, worse yet, figure out how to get a taxi for 13 people.

We rode the WDW bus to MK, then walked over to the monorail.
In the afternoon heat, this seemed like a LONG walk.
Especially as it was starting to drizzle.

I wish the buses were closer to the monorail.
And the park.
And my room.

But I digress.

Bionic SIL and kids, and Mom had not had a ride on the monorail yet.
They really enjoyed it. :wizard:

And I just read in my friend HeatherSue's trip report,

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1831386

that her dh Henry says
that the barn-like smell on the monorail
is actually the smell of an electric motor.

Well that explains it!

I was pretty sure that they were not letting animals whiz on the monorail
but ya never know!

:rolleyes1

It's a quick trip to the Contemporary, as it is the first stop on the hotel loop FROM the MK.
On the way back, you have to go through the entire loop.
But we like that part.

I don't remember having a very long wait,
I think due to cutting time short (naps are important!)

We had decided to forgo the picture,
knowing now that they would try to gouge us for a mediocre pic,
and that we'd rather just get on to the food.

We were seated in the back window filled room.

It was a GREAT location, with an awesome view
of the roof of the Contemporary, and most of the lake.

We had been in the room next to it last trip,
but the sun was setting so we managed to only see
the shades drawn and bright sunlight streaming through.

This time, due to the storm outside, the shades were wide open.

It was just up the stairs from the buffet, which was really handy.

Chef Mickey's is a rather noisy place.
The food is excellent, and quite fancy by Hick standards,
yet still has offerings like Mac and Cheese, and chicken nuggets.

If you are looking for fine dining in a quiet atmosphere...
this ain't it.

If you are looking for good food,
and fun character interaction,
with a party feel...this is your place! :thumbsup2

The CM took our drink orders, and I knew what I was having.
Chef Mickey's has had, on both trips, the most delicious
Pina Coloda smoothie.

It contains no alcohol, and doesn't need it.

It is delicious, smooth, and creamy,
better than an alchoholic Pina Colada,
because they tend to be heavy on the ice.

You can see Bionic SIL's smoothie below.

IMG_0368.jpg

Our first Free Dining trip they included the smoothie on the dining plan.

But restaurants are not required to include specialty drinks,
and, alas, this time we had to pay out of pocket.

Mom had a glass of wine (not sure what kind?),
and John had, I think, an Amber Bock (beer).

They both also enjoyed their out of pocket drink choices very much.

But, let me step back a moment and say
that I can't remember if the chef came and spoke to us that night
about our Food Allergies.
One did on our last trip,
and I know that they didn't on our breakfast meal later this trip,
but I THINK they did this visit, just can't remember for sure.

I remember that the waiter asked who had a special occasion,
and we looked at him blankly,
and he double checked his paper and said
"Um, maybe it was a special request???"

OH! Food allergies!
I pointed out Danger Boy,
forgetting entirely about Bitsy,
and the waiter gave Danger Boy a "it's your special day" placemat.
Which I thought was really weird.

And, I remembered later, we left it there!

Anyway, all that to say, if you NEED to talk to a chef, PLEASE ASK!
Don't just assume they will send one out to you.

I pretty much know what to avoid, but my kids aren't ana to their foods,
so we're not as much at risk.

I think we barely had time to get our food when the characters started arriving.
They were Minnie, Mickey, Pluto, Goofy,
and Donald was standing at the entrance.

Well, I've got to go do laundry :laundy:
so I'll update more later.

Next up: The Incident at Chef Mickey's, Part 2

Oh, dear. Having had a Chef Mickey's incident myself, I fear the rest (but I'm glad to see an update).

:wizard: The Incident at Chef Mickey's, Part 2 Sept. 07

So we had been given a special occasion placemat for food allergies,
Had been walked through the buffet by the chef (I checked on that, he did!),
Had been seated by the big windows with a view of the lake,
and had ordered YUMMY pina colada smoothies.

What was left to do?

Well, get some food, of course!

But first, a moment with the Mouse.

Yes, it was Mickey!

We had yet to meet Mickey this trip,
and the jr.s were really looking forward to it.

IMG_0372.jpg

IMG_0371.jpg

Then, the unthinkable happened....

Stitch Jr., in his relentless enthusiasm,
attempted to hug Mickey from behind,
right as Mickey was bending down to greet one of the younger kids.

:scared1:

Mickey started to tip over and fly into a table.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Where were the stinkin handlers, I ask you????

Any other time,
they are hovering right there as the characters meet and greet.

But this time, poor, defenseless, Mickey
was left at the mercy of one very excited young child.

We screamed at poor Stitch Jr., thinking he had, gulp,
ATTACKED MICKEY!

And feared for our hides.
And, that we might be BANNED from WDW.
:faint:

But, when we realized what happened, and that Mickey was all right,
and that Mickey was extremely gracious about the whole thing,
we finally relaxed and started to enjoy ourselves.

Let me just say, Mickey, does not get paid enough!
Our kid wasn't even trying to hurt Mickey, and
other kids DO,
so Mickey's day must be really challenging.

I think that was the reason Mickey decided to forgive an forget,
and JOIN US FOR DINNER!!!

IMG_0369.jpg

IMG_0370.jpg

The kids just giggled and giggled. :lovestruc

They thought it was soooo cool that Mickey was seated at their table.

(I forgot to mention that they had us at two tables,
side by side, but this was actually nice,
considering the boys were all sent over to the other table. :thumbsup2 )
Finally, after what seemed like a long time, Mickey wandered off,
probably to get a stiff shot of something calming. :drinking1

Here is an example of the food at Chef Mickey's:

IMG_0367-1.jpg

Mickey Ravioli (or Mickioli, as we call it),
roasted potatoes,
cornbread stuffing with dried cherries,
glazed carrots (possibly citrus glaze??)
some kind of meat thing,
a casserole-ish looking substance,
steamed broccoli with a something-something sauce,
and a space
where a REALLY yummy pasta with bacon and peas had been.
YUM!

(Note to self, next time, take more pics, and,
oh yeah, write down what's in them.)

Ooops, I was wrong, Donald was NOT greeting in the entrance,
that was Goofy.
We have no pics of him, as we saw him at LTT,
so didn't bother waiting in the rather long line.

So here's Donald:

IMG_0366.jpg

And Minnie:

IMG_0365.jpg

Everyone was great, with plenty of interaction,
and the kids had a great time.

I remember there was some issue with the other large party
that was sharing the room with us,
but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was,
which, I guess, is a good thing,
because there is NO reason for people like that
to be stored in your long term memory.

As we were eating, we watched this incredibly wicked thunderstorm
roll in over the lake.
I later saw pics of MK that night,
and, basically, it was down-pour city.
People had to wring out their clothes and slosh around.
Boy, am I gllad I was eating instead of doing that! :wizard:

We finished up our dinner,
and rolled out to the monorail
for a stormy late night ride through hotels
we will NEVER be able to afford.

And, just let me say,
they looked GORGEOUS all lit up for the night.

Sigh.

Just ONCE, I would like to stay at the Grand Floridian.

It probably would not measure up to Pop Century,
especially in bang for a buck,
but I think I'd be willing to risk it.
;)

So, all in all, we still really like and enjoy dinner at Chef Mickey's.

Noisy? Yes.
Tasty? Yes.
Interaction? Good.

So, if you have been on the fence about Chef Mickey's, I say,
throw the straw hat over and jump in.

Next up:
Puffed...French...Toast...drooooooooool,
Pork Trifecta,
And a little Pooh for good measure.

Woo-hoo!! You gave me a shout-out!!!

I am SOOO jealous of your Mickey interaction!!! I was dissed by Mickey, you know...I guess we should have just knocked him down!:rotfl: You even got individual pictures with him!

I am also jealous of your nice pictures! Your kids look so orderly in them. Ours are all- hurry up and get in the picture *snap*, move on.

Heyyyyyy...an update! Love the pics and the part about Mickey tipping over had me laughing so hard I was crying! I could just picture the whole thing happening in slow motion. :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: Hope your summer is going well and I'll be awaiting the next update as always!

Great food report. Thanks so much. I really have enjoyed your writing style. We are heading to WDW in September for Free Dining and will be visiting quite a few of the places you've mentioned. I can't wait.

Can I ask where you got the matching shirts that you are all wearing in your sig? Are they custom made? Did you get them online?

Cheers
Angela

Of course I gave you a shout out.
While The Chef is the expert on Flora and Fauna,
and Ninja Boy is the expert on everything, well, Ninja-ish,
And I, of course, am the Disney expert (with some British Literature thrown in),
we rely on Henry for all things Mechanical and Home Improvement. LOL

Yeah, Mickey was OK. It really was horrible to watch him almost go down.
But he treated us well anyway.

Orderly? I'm only showing the best of the best pics.
We have had some doozies.
Our photobucket aren't always the best.

I'm here to entertain! LOL
Summer is fine.
We're supposed to be schooling, but we have had a lot of days of too.
Daddy's on vacation this week, so he and the boys are going camping one night.
Me, not so much.
If there is no flush toliet, I just say no.

Welcome Angela!
You'll love free dining! The only down side is the hot weather.

The shirts are from Disney Store online. I think that particular style has been discontinued, but I got some of them for $5.
They have really good sales if you watch for them.

It was much more expensive to have a specialty site make them.
HeatherSue who posted a couple of posts ahead of you is really good at making her own, and she gets a lot of her ideas from the DisBoutique board (I think it is under Family Board.)

ETA: Just realized you were from Australia. Awesome!
My son (The Chef, almost 12) is taking a class just on Australia this fall at our homeschool co-op.
He is really looking forward to it, as he has always wanted to go there.

Thanks for reading!

What a great looking family you have!
I am so glad to be reading about some of the places we will be trying out on our first trip to Disney World!
I am hoping my son will see your little people interacting with the characters and see that he does not have to be scared of them!
Thanks for sharing:)

Thanks for another great update. Chef Mickeys sounds great, we so want to do this next year.

Thanks! Some of my kids have no problems with characters, and the others need a moment (or a week, or a month, or a couple of years. LOL)

How old is your son?

At least with character meals, if you have a really timid child,
you can put them on the back of the table,
and they can just wave at the character and talk to them at a distance.

Thanks for another great update. Chef Mickeys sounds great, we so want to do this next year.

Laur's princess:

Yeah, we like it. We might skip it next trip for 1900 park faire, as we've never been there.
(That's IF there is free dining again. Otherwise it will be sandwiches.
No, not really, but it will be a hard sell to BUY the dining plan.)

Congrats on the upcoming baby. Not too long now!
