I just moved to Williamsburg, Va, we are thinking of taking a small trip up to Washington DC next weekend after Thanksgiving. I was wondering what kind of advice, tips, or info anyone could give me about the area or things to do. I am also a little concerned about it being on the tail end of a holiday weekend. So, if anyone could help me out here I would be ever so grateful.

Thanks
Kim

Congrats on the move! I love Williamsburg, in fact we'll be there for almost three weeks over Christmas. Planning to do any of the Colonial Christmas stuff?

For DC, pack your best walking shoes! It's easily twice as much walking as a Disney vacation, and mostly on hard marble floors. I'd say for a quickie first trip, concentrate on the Smithsonian. You could easily get lost in a single museum for weeks, but it's possible to see the majority of the highlights in one museum in half a day.

What are your interests? Government in action? History? Nightlife? The arts? I've spent tons of time in DC, but it's hard to give specific recommendations without knowing anything about you :confused3

We (DH, self, DS15 & DS11) were just to DC in August and we loved it We'd go back in a heartbeat!

Once you're able to post specifics I'd be happy to offer my suggestions too.

Off the top of my head, generic info, parking is hard to find in DC proper. We always took the metro in. Easy to use once we figured it out.

Keep an eye on the time where supper / dinner is concerned. We were hard pressed to find any quick service type places open after 6PM.

Sorry for the delay, the specifics are me, dh, ds13 and dd10. We may want to spend one night and more interested in the national museums and monuments.

Thanks
Kim

We are new here and don't know much about the area yet, would you mind telling me what is going on here for Christmas?

Thanks
Kim

Not the most economical choice, but I would recommend staying at the Gaylord on the National Harbor (actually in MD) and getting an ICE! package and immersing yourself in the Christmas festivities that hotel has to offer! :)

We only live a short drive away, and are considering staying there this weekend just to get away. Our other option we're considering is actually going to Williamsburg for the weekend. :rotfl2:

Great Wolfe Lodge has a few special things for Christmas here in Wmsbg but I think that its further into December. They have a special dinner in a few weeks and every person that attends recieves 4 vouchers per person to come to the waterpark for the next year. Im not sure if this is something you'd be interested in but it is what I know of right now.

Thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim,

Certainly! You happen to be living near the biggest Colonial Christmas celebration in the country :thumbsup2 Everything takes place in the historic district (run by the Colonial Williamsburg foundation). There's an admission fee, but annual passes are dirt cheap. Of course, a lot of the special programming costs extra ;) Christmas starts with the Grand Illumination December 5. No admission fee, it takes place on the Palace Grounds, but bring a blanket or lawn chairs and get there early in the day to stake out a spot. Our favorite special event is the Yuletide Supper at the Williamsburg Lodge on Christmas Eve. It's probably sold out by now, but there's a 3 day cancellation policy, so you may be able to get something last minute. Second favorite is Christmastide at Home, a collection of scenes of Christmases past. That repeats a lot and is easy to get tickets for. Everything's worthwhile though.

Here's the website: http://history.org/visit/christmas/ I'd go ahead and buy tickets for anything that interests you. They've been on sale to the public since Sept 23.
