Visiting Hocking Hills

Anyone have any information on visiting Hocking Hills in Ohio? My extended family is looking to meet up here for a long weekend, possibly the first weekend in August. I always get the best travel info from here, so i wanted to check here before I started randomly googling. None of us have been before, but the location is centrally located and appealed to a majority of the group. We are a group of 13, 8 adults and 5 children. What sort of things should we search for in looking for lodging - do we want to be close to a particular location (like is there a "best" place location wise to stay?), etc. We want a large place together verses individual rooms at a lodge/hotel.

After lodging, does anyone have suggestions for things that might appeal to a whole group? It's 5 kids ages 4 to 12, 3 sets of "young" couples (parents to these kids, mostly in our 30's) and a set of grandparents in their 50-60's and active.

I live a couple hours from hocking hills. It is beautiful there. That said, I’ve only been there once. We stayed in Athens at a catholic retreat house. It was large enough for a big crowd. Athens has a fun little farmers market. We hiked although it poured rain on us. There is also a place where you can zip line.

I think old mans cave is the top pick for hiking. There are more rental companies than you can count. A friend of mine uses cherry hill retreat and loves them.

I grew up in Ohio and we camped there several times, but it's been a while. I remember there are several short hikes around, that we had to drive to individually, so it may not matter exactly where you stay. I think we drove up to Logan to swim.

There are lots of cabin rentals in Hocking Hills. There is a zipline place, I think go carts/ mini golf, there is also train ride close to the area that is fun. Hiking is the main attraction in the area.

We traveled with three generations and it was an amazing trip! Lots of great memories were made - especially since there was no cell service at the cabin so we were 'forced' to talk to each other, play games, etc.

We live an hour away and visit each year. I feel that Athens is too far away. Rent a cabin if you can. Depending on how active you are, you can hike from one stop to another instead of driving. What we typically do is have two vehicles and park one at the end so we don’t have to a round trip. Then you can see Ash Cave, Old Mans Cave and Rockhouse (if I am remembering the path correctly).

We usually don’t have cell service so make sure everyone knows where to meet up in advance.

If you like to camp, there are some great options.

Reserve an observation spot at the John Glen observatory for a nighttime view of the sky. It is free and reservations are needed for each car that will be in the lot. Bring chairs, blankets and snacks.

I wouldn’t let the kids run ahead as cliffs are all around.
