A family member is going to be working for WDW as an intern for 7 months. We are thinking about going to visit her while she is there. We are prepared to pay rack rate for everything, but I'm wondering if there are any discounts she can use for family?

CM typically get fantastic discounts. A current list can be found here: http://urbantastebud.com/disney-cast-member-dining-discounts/ and here: http://disney.urbantastebud.com/disney-cast-member-discounts/ .

ETA: They also receive discounts on rooms. I believe it's 50% if they're staying with family, 40% if they aren't.

CMs get friends and family discounts. Only the room discount works when the CM isn't present. When you are booked under a friends and family it can be between 0%-40% off. Sometimes there are no rooms left on the CM rate just like all other discounts. The CM does not have to be in the room or on the reservation they just book it through the hub or by calling and then you own the reservation and are in charge of anything due at check in. The CM will have to provide their ID to the hotel with in 7 days of your check in date or you will pay rack rate.

CMs can get people in for free but interns are very limited on the number of days and they do not get them all at once. They can also but a limited number of tickets at 10% off at any Company D location.

Merchandise discounts are for the CMs only. They can buy you things with their discount but they are not suppose to take money back for the purchases. Of course all CMs know how to get around this but can't talk about it here since it is tech against Disney rules.

Food discounts the CM has to be dinning with you but does not have to pay. It is not all locations or times so they should check on the hub.

Any idea if Universal works the same way with their rooms? We are using my nephew's discount but he is under the impression he needs to be there for check-in.

There was another thread about this. Someone was going to be doing the Disney College Program, and was contemplating options for parents and girlfriend visiting. I believe people said that he wouldn't be able to book rooms with the discount until after he had arrived and gone through Traditions, which is orientation.
