Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but my friend mentioned to me the other day that you no longer fill out your visa form on the plane; you have to get one before you leave! Is this correct?

You have to fill out an ESTA application form online for each person travelling. There is a sticky on the top of this forum page which tells you how to go about it.

Do you need a Visa or do you mean the visa waiver program ? (green card you used to fill in on the plane)

If you can enter the US on the visa waiver program you have to do ESTA before departure
there is a sticky on this board called ESTA
