Bump to help answer Q's.
I didn't know that different category 3's looked differently.
The most striking difference is between the standard Cat 3 and the midship, sideways Cat 3 (there are only 4 of these). If you go to the DCL website and look at the different categories, you will see a virtual tour of the sideways cabin and the floorplan of the standard Cat 3.
We found the sideways layout much more spacious (even with only 2 of us in the cabin) and booked connecting sideways midship Cat 3s for our January '09 cruise. We are splurging and putting 3 people in each one! Hope it's not crowded....

Two category 1's? Do you mean the Walt and Roy suites? If so, WOW!That is so good to know. Right now we travel with two boys who are no longer little and so we are doing category 2's or 1's. But we think the next cruise we will do a category 3 for ourselves and get them a regular room. I will make a mental note to try for a sideways midship room.

ETA: Somehow I didn't read your post correctly the first time. I was under the impression that you booked both suites for the same cruise for the four of you. Sorry.
I can only afford one Cat 3, not two Cat 1's.
I didn't type it clearly, my apologies. Our first cruise we did a Catgeory 3 as the boys were 8 and 13 and comfy sleeping on the pull out couch. Then we booked a Category 2 as it had the 2nd bedroom and the boys were 11 and 16. Our next cruise we will either do a Category 1 as my 2 nephews will be traveling with us or we will get a Category 3 for the two of us and put the boys in either a category 3 or a regular room as they will be all old enough to be without us.
I'm with you there... I'm not rich by any means. We save like the dickens to pay it off before going. Usually only every other year. This year we are going to Disney instead but won't book a cruise for 2 years.
Cruising with DCL is expensive, I have always had a CAT 4, gone for the experience of a CAT 3 in 2009, but wouldn't spend the cash on a CAT1/2.
For us the flights cost us a bomb to/from the USA, and I have limited holiday time, so having two cruises in a year is impossible, so I might as well have extra comfort instead!

We seem to have similar tastes! Champagne tastes on teacher and police officer budget! We've cruised twice with our two boys (first time 11 & 13, second time 13 & 14) and have done both a category 1 and a category 2. We really preferred the category 2. We liked the fact that both the boys and we had rooms that had 'real' doors. I was just thinking that if you did the category 2 again with your nephews that you could do the pull down bunks for the extra room and still have the privacy for you and your hubby (the category 1's have a pocket door in between the library and the master suite which have a twist type lock and partially frosted windows - not really complete privacy if someone is sleeping in the murphy bed). To us, the togetherness as well as the privacy is what we want. I know it's not for everyone, be we love hanging out watching movies and eating breakfast together in the suites. We save for 18 months in between for those wonderful weeks!

Cheers to good tastes and empty wallets!!![]()
I don't think I realized that the Category 1 had the pocket door thing. I didn't like that too much in the Category 3... one rocky night the doors kept banging open and shut and no matter what we did we could not keep them opened or closed. hahaha I did love the Category 2... I think it is just the wondering of what it would be like to be in a Category 1. It is so exciting. When is your next cruise? hahahaha Maybe we'll end up on one together. We usually go in September or October. Prices are cheaper...hahaha
Yes, all railings have the plexiglass on the inside. It goes floor to ceiling on deck 9.
