Call Virgin. I was a travel agent a long long long time ago. When airfares would go down we would do an issue and exchange and the client would be refunded the difference on their credit card. Some airlines the client would have to deal directly with the airlines. Now understand I'm a dinosaur but I think it would be worth calling the airline! It would sometimes depend on the terms of the ticket. If you could get a refund. Good luck.
No refund on the fare, but was able to upgrade the full trip to premium economy very cheaply and receive a refund on our pre-booked seats covering half that amount, so not a bad result (despite somehow spending more money!)

I'm Late replying but was literally about to say this.
We did this in 2012 as the fare dropped considerable so we was able to upgrade for around £60 pp

I was just about to suggest this. We booked and then the price went down. So we got Premium on the return leg only for just £20 more than we had paid for economy. Plus on the return leg I'm sure we will use the extra luggage allowance for all our outlet shopping!
Sorry for my late reply and I have to also say that I haven't read all through this thread.
I booked from Glasgow ( premium economy) and prices went down for upper class on same flight to almost equivelant price I had paid. Virgin upgraded my seats for a very small difference that was in the sale price.
