Virgin Baggage Allowance

Would love to hear your response from virgin, as we are looking at doing the same, take an extra bag in our suitcase outbound and then pay for the extra bag coming home.

Was shocked and annoyed at baggage allowance changes, thats nearly the same allowance as a flight to europe:confused::confused::confused: (where there is no decent shopping!!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:)

Wow!!! You certainly got a great deal! :thumbsup2 Will you have internet access while you are there? If so, you could wait and see how your luggage is looking a few days before you leave and then arrange to pre-pay on the internet when you check in (if this is an option). Let us know what you hear from Virgin. Those of us heavy-duty shoppers are always on the lookout for info. ;)

Yeah, we were VERY lucky - partly due to my fellow UK cms being amazing and helping out with tickets. I'll keep you posted on Virgin's response. I still can't believe the weight...don't they get that it's DISNEY...we HAVE to shop!!!

Don't forget to complete your ESTA forms too :) almost forgot about ours!

Already done them and hassled my friends to do theirs too. But thanks for the reminder. I almost forgot for my trip to cali in sept - or rather didn't know about them til a month or so before we went.

Last year we flew with Thomas Cook and "upgraded" our luggage to 20kg each - it was supposed to be 15!!!:scared1: But we also had a one year old with us who wasn't entitled to ANY allowance because he was an infant so all his stuff had to go under our allowance!! Excess baggage $140 on the way home!!

My DD, 7 at the time, offered a rather creative suggestion last year just prior to check out. I was struggling with luggage scales (creak, groan :rotfl:) and she said "Why can't you just find a nice guy here? Then you won't have to worry about fitting stuff on the plane." :rotfl2: I surveyed the volume of luggage all around us and knew there and then that this was naive advice; with the amount of shopping I did, only elite few could afford to keep me!

Seriously though, the 23 kg per person is not bad and I wouldn't stop flying with VA just because of that. I would have a problem with the charter airline allowances, but if it is a choice of going and buying less, or not going at all, I would rather curb my spending. Or take old clothes there, buy new ones and bin the old ones to make space for the return. (Before you laugh, I have done this before )

Hiya -
we are lucky(?!) got 2 kids over age of toddlerhood and under age of teens , us "grown ups" are mid 40s now so don't give a monkeys about over-grooming on holidays (hair straighteners -in that humidity, with the lower power - best not to bother :sad2: )- so we get 4 X 23kg to play with - and as we are staying in a villa for a couple of weeks we have laundry, so don't have to take more than 4 or 5 changes of clothes each. We only take 2 bags on the way out - one has a fold up holdall in it too... OK, we bring back 3 - lots of shopping !!

I did this last year too. A pile of cheapo tesco vest tops were left behind! :goodvibes

Oh good - nice to know I'm not alone! I must admit, I left a LOT more than just vest tops - had to make way for the result of the $12 jeans sale at the Levi shop :rotfl2: Oh, and the SHOES :rolleyes1

See, I seem to take way too much in the way of toiletries. Have to limit it cause that weighs a ton.

Seobaina, do you take full sized bottles/containers of these things? I decant (I like my own brands) into small travel bottles or alternatively take things that are nearly finished. My aim is to have practically nothing left by the end of the stay so that I can ditch the containers. I take very little with me on the outbound, considering how long we go for.

Nope, I decant too. Just take too much LOL. I just find that with my case (which I don't think is that light alone), clothes, shoes, etc it fills up and on way home I have things like a photo album etc in too. I'm rarely worried with two bags - never worried about being over more that one might be too heavy so I'd have to balance things. But I am pretty certain I'd be over the 23kg single allowance on the way home. But also not sure whether my bag would be too heavy if I put an empty one inside on way out. Think I'll have to have a play before I do that.

I have a few basic "rules" for packing.

Take cheap luggage scales. The stress of guesswork before leaving for the airport is more than I am willing to take on! :headache:

Use a lightweight suitcase.

Wear your heaviest clothing on the plane. For example, I take 2 pairs of shoes, one of which are crocs/sketchers (croc style if you know what I mean). The crocs go in the luggage as they are light. The more solid ones I wear.

I always take a pair of jeans. I wear these on the plane - regardless of how hot it is outside.

No more than 5 changes of clothing (not talk;ing about underwear) and a few washing powder tablets.

On the way back, put a few heavier items (small ones) into hand luggage to get the weight out of the big bags.

If I'm not absolutely sure I need something and cannot guarantee I will use it there, it doesn't come with.

I have been cramming suitcases for a couple of decades now. There are ways to maximise your space and weight allowance. ;)

Thank you, those are very useful guidelines. I've grabbed some cheap scales - (handheld type) to use.

really really annoyed, finally I have spoken to someone at Virgin Flying Club as customer service didn't answer either of my emails .... although I booked the holiday on May 3rd last year, the tickets weren't issued until 19th december ... and they won't budge, so we're on one bag each :(

I can't believe it! :sad2: (not you - but that they didn't ticket it until December). I booked in May last year too, but when I emailed them before the new baggage restrictions to ask, they confirmed that I am entitled to the old baggage allowance. It reflects accordingly on my "Manage your flights" on the website. Not very consistent. I would be shouting loudly (figuratively speaking ;))

Good for you! Yes definitely handheld so you did well there. They hardly weigh anything. Just make sure you pack them into your hold baggage after you have weighed it. I seem to think they should not be in hand baggage for some reason. :)
Of course if you won't die of the heat, you can always wear a lot of clothing on the flight home :rotfl2:

I'm going to ... I figure that an email is getting me nowhere so I'm going to write ... but there's only a week (can't help but smile and feel excited at that comment) before we leave so whether I'll get anywhere I'm not sure ... I do know that my phone conversations with Jetsave have been on the whole unsatisfactory so I know complaining to them verbally will be a waste of time (It's reminded me why I haven't booked a package holiday for ten years ... then I keep telling myself to remember this was cheaper than just the flights on virgin's website!! so if I have to pay 32quid for a bag is it such a bad thing?).

I am so sorry. Only a week left :yay: You need to stick to your guns but resolve to yourself that by the time you leave, what will be will be and not to entertain it anymore. I would phone and ask for a customer services fax number. I would also ask for the name of the duty customer services supervisor/manager and send the letter by fax and by first class recorded delivery. You can see on Royal Mails website the next afternoon a scanned version of the signature. This is your confirmation. I say this because I know Thomas Cook seem to claim never to receive correspondence when it is negative (funny thing that ....)!!

Tell them that you will be taking this further if it is not resolved to your satisfaction. It will take some doing but you may be able to claim under one of a few sections of your travel insurance, depending what kind of policy you have. Also check their Ts&Cs under a heading like "Our obligation to you". This is a service (or a part thereof) which can potentially affect the enjoyment of your trip. There are ways around it but not without considerable effort and plenty of admin on your part. I have just come out a little better off (with a compromise) with Disney UK this afternoon after 4 months of trying to get something sorted. I might post about it tonight if I have time. ;)

ETA: If you do leave without a change in their decision, pre-book your excess baggage online - much cheaper.

Thanks for all the tips. I'm a fairly regular traveller to the USA just never had to be so careful with bags before.

LOL If you see photos on the news of a short, ten-foot wide woman who looks like the michellin man you'll know I wore most of my clothes ;)

I'll keep my eye on the press. :lmao:Give me a heads up before you leave  Now see, I live in Scotland, so I had better remember to check the English papers too :rotfl2:
