I'm very confused about this.... I always book flights for our family of four in my name. This is two adults and now two children aged 12 and above. I have been a flying club member since 2013. Do the air miles for the whole family (4 flights per trip) go into my account or should I have made accounts for all of us?

My next question is how worthwhile are the miles anyway and how many do we need to be useful for a family of four......

This may all be very obvious to others. But not to me!

I believe it'll be just the one account, email or phone them just to check. It's worth having as I just used my points to pay for flights to Orlando (I had to pay taxes which are nothing to do with the airlines, but, still £220 for return economy flights to Orlando!) I also convert my Tesco Clubcard points to Virgin miles, it really bumped them up and I don't do a huge lot of shopping at Tesco either.

I asked Virgin about this last December and they said to open separate accounts. Maybe it's changed since then but I don't think so

Each adult and child aged over 12 years needs their own Flying Club account, I think any child under 12 can only earn points if linked to an adult Gold members card and then that member gets the miles not the child.

Once I've got these can I get miles retrospectively added from August 2014 and May 2014 trips?

And finally. If there are four account how do you use all the miles for one trip as a family?.......

You can gift the air miles between accounts to eliminate that problem!

You can retrospectively claim miles, yes, but only for a few months! I can't remember how far back it will let you go, but it's not far - I could only claim one of the two I wanted retrospectively.

You only get miles once you've flown not on booking so you will get your August miles added after your flights.

You have 6 months to claim for any prior flights.

It's free to join and collect miles so it's worth doing and hopefully you will be able use them in future

Thanks I think I know enough to get the extra accounts now. I should at least be able to claim the miles for my DD from last week.

We just booked miles + money flights to Orlando for 4 adults 3 kids and an infant.

When I booked I called as we needed to use 2 lots of people miles to cover the flight. We saved about £500 overall by using 2000 each + 200 for the infant. Quite a saving considering its "free" money.

Before you set up accounts for other family members, use the 'Invite a friend' option to invite them and set their accounts up from the invite sso you will all get some bonus miles.

You have to keep your account active as well or you'll lose your points after 2 years of no activity. You can get a Virgin credit card to get more miles.

My brother tried to gift/transfer 31000 miles from his Flying Club account to mine but VA were charging £255 for the "privilege" seems extortionate or am I missing something ? I never thought there would be any charge ?!?

It's frequently better to buy the miles instead of transferring. The cost is not much different when offers are on and you get both sets of miles to keep/use.
