Vinyl siding question

We have vinyl siding on the house we bought, what is the best way to hang something (ie: slate picture or wreath) from the house? Can we safely nail or screw into the siding? Front door is out of the question as it is glass top to bottom and I would really like to hang our slate to the one side of the front door. Any suggestions?

Since no one has answered your question, I thought I would. I would go to a good local hardware store and ask them. They usually will have a couple of suggestions. Good luck. Jay

Thanks, Jay, for answering me. To be honest, I never even thought of asking someone at the hardware store. Maybe I will swing into Home Depot and see what they have to say once the holidays settle down. Thanks.

home depot is not a hardware store,, those people are not qualified to answer building questions, now original ? response,, you should be able to fasten through the siding, it may crack if you try to screw straight into it, i would r ecommend pre drilling your hole and prior to drilling press against siding to make sure its over a solid surface. you may need a longer screw, and do not over tighten it

Possibly get a strong suction cup for the glass door.

We have done such and it works.

Just as an aside, we have never had a problem finding someone who could answer questions like that at Home Depot. Lowe's on the other hand, forget it.

This works great for wreaths.....but no way on the slate, that would crack the door in a heartbeat with a 9 year old in and out.

Well, we're in a house with vinyl siding (I curse it every day) and the previous owner stuck all sorts of things into it.

The one time I've seen something done properly was when the satellite guy came out and drilled a hole through the siding to put in a cable line, after he made the hole he sealed around it with silicone caulking-clear gooey stuff.

He said it would prevent any intrusion of moisture into the back side of the siding. Considering the previous owners *lit the siding on fire* with their grill, I told him I appreciated his care but I wasn't too worried

Sooo, maybe make a hole, but use caulking to seal it...

Our community association is run by two home builders (just a coincidence). The law here is that if you put a hole in the siding, you pay to have it repaired immediately. Even folks wanting to run the wire for satellite cable are required to run the wire down to the foundation and then into the house. (They do allow folks to affix things to the wood trim, but never through the siding.)
