I can't decide if I want to take the video camera. Can someone tell me what they take video of on the cruise?? We never seem to watch the movies that much so I'm leaning on NOT taking it right now and just taking lots of pics!!!!!!

I have seen very few people with video cameras. I believe they still forbid you to video the shows in the theaters (plus "no flash" for still photos inside). I guess you could video the deck parties or dining experiences, or activities on the islands, etc. But nearly everyone I see just shoots LOTS of still photos. That is my choice as well. If your camcorder is more trouble to operate, or larger than your still camera, you might be happier without it.

Personally, I'd sooner stay home than to go without my video camera. I shot 17 HOURS of video on our 7-day cruise last year,
and consider it priceless now. I made copies of the edited video and sent them to all our friends who were on the cruise. Everyone seems to have gotten a great deal of enjoyment from them. For us, it is a great family evening to sit around, eat popcorn, and relive our vacation together! The kids love watching themselves go down the Mickey slide, DW and I always grin when we see the fabulous buffet at Palo's... I could go on and on.

This is just a personal preference of course - but I wouldn't even consider not taking one.

'Beano'

That sounds GREAT for those who take the time to sit down and watch the videos, but it sounds like kcand sunshine never seem to watch the movies so it MIGHT not be the way to go for them. You can compile still photos into a multimedia slideshow on CD, VCD, DVD or the Web, email photos to others or just carry an album to show. People like myself who always record shows on their VCR and never get around to watching them are usually better off leaving the camcorder at home ;-).

Thanks and I think you answered my question of not taking it. I am a single mom too so I especially don't want to lug it around.I think it's great if someone has time to film and watch it but I plan on relaxing and having a few drinks by the pool. I'll just plan to take lots of pics. Do you think 6 rolls is enough? That's a roll a day!

It depends on how much you want to shoot. If they are 36 exposure rolls, that may be enough. But if you just want to shoot everything in sight (which can be FUN and that way you don't miss anything!), take as much as you have room for - up to 2 rolls a day I'd say.

We don't even own a video camera, but I thought about borrowing one from my friend when we go on our land/sea vacation. Then I realized it would be a pain to drag around and we probably wouldn't watch it that much and decided not to. We'll probably just take a LOT of pictures. So I decided to use this as an excuse to finally buy a digital camera. I got a fairly nice, but basic one from a co-worker for next to nothing (he just upgraded to a $1,200 one  ) With memory sticks for cameras being so cheap right now, I figure we can take 200-300 mid-resolution photos (1152x864) and still be able to get decent 4x6 (maybe even 5x7) prints out of them if we want. Plus, my wife will be still be using her nice 35MM camera for shots we KNOW we'll want. I'm hoping it'll save on film a little. And like I said, I needed an excuse to buy a new toy ;)

Don't we all LOVE new TOYS? I shoot both 35mm and digital. There are a lot of GREAT digital cameras out there now, and they are so convenient.

Our family actually does the opposite of what seems to be the trend. We have a digital/analog video camera. What I have done, and plan to do on this trip, is just let the video camera run on the tape mode. Then, I plug it into the TV (so I can see better!) and "clip" the pictures I want onto the digital memory stick. The video quality on ours is better than the digital picture mode, unless it's set into super fine (which REALLY limits the amount you can put on a memory stick), so I just wait to clip the digital pictures into the high quality mode when I'm at my computer and can download them.

Our video camera is only slightly smaller than the 35 mm camera that we had been using. It actually fits into the same bag, so we just leave the 35mm at home, and push one button and let it run!

But I do agree that it's whatever works for you. In your situation, where you'd be borrowing one from someone else, I'd agree it's probably not worth it. It took quite a bit of playing around with ours before I figured out how to do what I described above.

Have fun!!

I will be taking mine ... along with 2 digital cams. (one that takes short movies).. the kids will be taking their izones and we bought them waterproof cams they can take snorkeling with them.

We might not do alot of camcordering but I would hate it if I didn't take it.

We will also be taking out laptop to transfer pictures to as our memory cards fill up. Great thing about digital you keep what you want delete what you don't. When you get home if you have a good printer you can print them. (which I will for scrap book).. I will also make a calage (spelled wrong as I have done with other outings our family has had) on paintshop that I will hang on our wall to remind us.
