last week I had a mri done because of migraines I have had for years...well I got a paper in the mail with a date to have a ultrasound on the thyroid...well no one called me just got this paper ....on a friday! says abnormal thyroid? well I am freaking out...my husband is beside himself and thinks I am dying of some kind of cancer...he cried (he does not cry) I dont know what to think...because no one called me and when I called friday afternoon NONE of the staff knew anything about it...it was not even on my chart?Thie thing is my nero doc did the mri and I got this paper from my primary doc...I called my nero tuesday and they said if anything was wrong they would have called but then I get this paper for a ultrasound....is this bad?i dont know anything about this and I am worried.I have 3 kids I have to be here for, Icant bear to think something may be wrong...

sounds to me like the letter was sent to the wrong person. I mean if the neuro office knows nothing about it and the Primary dr. knows nothing about it..it MUST be a mistake. I would call the Neuro back on Monday and ask if the results for the MRI are back. Honestly, if something were wrong you would have gotten a call from them not just a letter. Try to think positive until you know what's up for sure. Hang in there.

well thats what i thought to and then the nurse said "well he may have seen something on your mri and wanted to check it out" well i told her the nero did my mri not dr so and so and she said they may have sent it to them ? well now all i can do is worry and no one has told me anything......does anyone know how common thyroid cancer is? she said you may have a cyst or something that needs to be checked for something....

I have an abnormal thyroid and it doesnt just mean you have cancer or are dying at all. First off it sounds like a miscommunication and I dont think that letter belongs to you. Secondly when I went through testing for my thyroid it involved an uptake and scan test http://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?pg=thyroiduptake&bhcp=1

and then it was determined that I just needed medication to regulate what was wrong. Dont panic, please!

My dad and also a coworker of my DH's both have abnormal or in their cases underfunctioning thyroids. They just have to take medication for it. It's not cancerous, but it messes with their metabolizim(?sp)

My mother and I are two more to add to the abnormal thyroid list! She has Hashimoto's disease and I have an underactive thyroid. Its something they are finding very common in women is to have thyroid issues.(At least that is what my doctor told us) We both take medication (1 pill every night) and other then that neither of us have any other issues. Try not to worry anymore then you really have to.

It sounds like a miscommunication. I don't think they would know anything about your thyroid from a brain MRI. Is it possible the thyroid ultrasound is just another test they want to do to rule out things that might be causing your migraines?

There are lots of things that can happen to your thyroid to cause you to have abnormal thyroid levels, but in most cases your only need medication to regulate your thyroid. Relating "abnormal thyroid" to thyroid cancer is a huge assumption. Calm down, take a deep breath and enjoy your weekend.

BTW I have been on thyroid medication for 9 years. :)

i know ...thank you...i am just in panic mode because i dont know what is going on...oh when they did the mri they did a head AND neck...thanks for all the feedback though

It does sound really weird how you just got a letter out of the blue with no explanation and on a Friday too. Thats horrible to have to wait through. Call them again on Monday to find out why.

I was just reading up on thyroid cancer because I have some kind of lump in my throat that they are testing right now. I dont know what it is yet but the Doctor said it was a node on my thyroid. From my reading cancer is not that common, something like 6%.

A couple of months ago my DS-IL got her female test results back and it said she had gonherriah (sorry I know that is misspelled). She knew it wasn't true but, the office swore up and down it was for her. She couldn't take the test for a couple of weeks and then it took a little to get the results. Needless to say her and her Dh were giving each other the eye for a month, ha ha. It was negative of course.

Anyway, I know long story but, just wanted to show that mistakes happen ALL the time. Plus, like the previous poster abnormal thyroids are more common than you may think.

Hang in there.

I know it sounds easy for us to say it is likely nothing... it isn't happening to us. I would investigate MOnday morning with your neur doc with your report in hand.
I do hope everything is fine and that it is a miscommunication, thinking about you.

I am sure you are going to follow up- but it does sound like a miscommunication. In any case, even if it is for you- there are lots of reasons you could have an abnormal thyroid or a request for a u/s. I have hypothyroidism and it is so easily treated with meds- before i started they did have me have a u/s as well just to check everything out and make a start measurement. It has never been an issue as long as I continue to have it checked with meds. So common for women to be diagnosed with it.

thanks so much...I know I am worring about something i cant change but it was just a crappy thing for them to do...I worry about everything anyway lol but i am just trying to spend time with my family and not have them worry...I guess it was just hard to see my dh be so upset, he is such a manly man lol (a cop) after seeing him get so upset THEN i started to worry...I will be the dr office first thing monday to find out what the heck is going on..also on the paper it says history of thyroid problems ? I have had NO history of thyroid problems at all...maybe it is a mistake i hope so

First of all, if the MRI suggested anything cancerous, you would have gotten a phone call in 99% of the time. And the call would have come from the Neurologist, not your Family Dr. Did you have any bloodwork done? I have low thyroid levels and that showed up on bloodwork. I know it's easier said than done, but don't let your mind think of the worst possible scenario. There are so many other explanations and it may not be related to your MRI. I have worked in the medical field for years and I have never known a Dr. send bad news by mail.

My mom had been checked many times over the years for thyroid issues as she was told she had an enlarged thyroid. But every test they ran came back normal. Well this past summer, she had a chest x-ray done and in that they found a spot on her chest. She went for further testing and it turned out the thyroid had gone from 4cm to almost 10cm. She went to a specialist and after doing an u/s and a swallow test, it was determined that it needed to come out. In fact, instead of it becoming enlarged and going up (the way it normally does) it went into her chest cavity. She had the surgery and it all came back fine.

I tell you this so that you know that you are most likely ok. I wouldn't think the worst yet. Easier said than done. Let us know what you find out.

Don't worry. If they were doing an MRI of your brain for the migranes, then they didn't even look at your thyroid. I'm sure it was just a mistake. I got a call from my dentist a few weeks ago to schedule a root canal that I knew nothing about! They finally figured out that they have two patients with the same first and last name, and they had called the wrong one. :goodvibes

Please don't worry. I am such a worrier and would do the same. I would also call back and ask for further explanation. My husband's uncle died of cancer. His daughter was having some stomach trouble, went for testing, and received a letter from the doctor's office stating that the test revealed that cancer had been found. She was so upset that she would be notified this way. The staff knew about her father. When she called, they said it was incorrect. The letter was supposed to say that the test had revealed no cancer. Big mistake on their part. Please try not to worry until you find out more.

i am hoping it is a mistake, about the mri...my nero did a mri on my head and neck (because of a injury last year, she wanted to make sure there was no injury to my neck)yeh i dont understand why my family dr would know this befor my nero, either it is a mistake or someone dropped the ball.I am glad that people have told me their storys, it makes me feel much better, i thought about just not going to get the ultrasound ..i know i shouldnt do that..but after reading your posts I am going to do what i need to do (if it was not a mistake) I wont be a chicken lol THANKS SO MUCH

Did your family doc do any recent blood tests? Even a slightly high or low reading will result in further testing. IF this appt is for you don't worry, an abnormal thyroid is VERY common and usually is something that is easily treated.

One of the symptoms that appears when my thyroid gets hyperactive (Graves Disease --- a form of hyperthyroidism which I've had two bouts of -- both treated by medication) is that my migraines increase in frequency and severity. With my thyroid under control I get 2 or 4 migranes a month... only maybe 1 of which is what I would consider serious --- full auras, no meds that can help, etc... . The others I can work through (only partial auras, no throwing up,etc..) with meds. When I had the hyperthyroidism I was probably getting about 5 or 6 a month (or more) and they were all major migranes that in some case lasted days.

Talk to your family doctors office after the weekend. But don't worry, this is probably nothing.

No,i have not done any blood work at all...weird huh? but maybe they looked because of all the migraines like you said, I have had them for years but they have got worse...I have then very often and some do last for days...I will look in to it on monday.i feel much better about it now,i cant tell you how much your posts have helped tonight, I really let my panic get away from me.i just love my family so much that just the thought of something like this freaked me out.... :flower3: :flower3: :flower3: to everyone
