...that I cancelled my January 28th Dream cruise. Florida is having one of its coldest weekends in decades. Castaway Cay has a high of 60 degrees today ("feels like 56") and a high of 64 tomorrow ("feels like 62"). I cruise in winter to get away from the cold, so it would have been a total bummer to have cruised in that kind of weather, with cool wind blowing over the ship, and not being able to really enjoy the pools and the beaches.

We were on the Magic on Jan 22 with 2 stops at Castaway Cay and a stop in Nassau. Our first day at CC was chilly. Temps were about 68 and very windy with sun coming in and out. We didn't even get our swim stuff on just walked around the island and had a drink and then sat on loungers for about 20 minutes and got too cold. We headed back to the ship at noon and hung out by the adult pool where it was less windy. Nassau was a beautiful day and our second day at CC was great.....but the water was too chilly for me. We had a great day and great cruise!! The adult pool onboard was nice and warm.

Glad you had fun. It helped that you were on a longer cruise, so the weather wasn't consistently bad for you. The Dream is currently sailing a 3-night cruise, so the weather isn't going to be warm at all during that cruise.

If you don't care about being warm, I'm sure you'd still have a great time. But what a bummer and bad luck for those who do care.

Not only that but when it's single digits, you hang out inside by the fire. We take warm weather getaways so we can enjoy being outside in January. We went to Universal last week and it was freezing... we had a lot of fun but the fact that it was 60 instead of 20 didn't make us feel like we'd escaped the cold because we were spending all day outside in unpleasant weather.

Life goes on. I don't have time to just hang out inside by the fire despite the freeze and snow outside. It was -11F here this morning. So, nope, I would take a week's vacation with temps in the 60s over what we've got a home. It all depends on your perspective.

It depends more on your available vacation dollars and available free time. If taking time off for such a getaway is no big deal for you, and you have ample money to spend on a middling trip, then yeah, sure, anyone would rather be sailing. But given that my disposable money and my vacation time are limited, I wouldn't want to pay for and take off work for a tropical vacation that didn't feel tropical, where I couldn't enjoy swimming or lounging outside. I'd rather continue to trudge to and from work in the cold, saving my money and my vacation days, knowing that I have a much better vacation coming up.

Yes, and it's usually like that in winter in the Bahamas. I love to go there in winter, and enjoy the warmth when it's cold back home. Such a bummer for those who had bad luck with the extreme weather this weekend!

Oh, I know. That's why I said I understood what you were saying and would probably feel the same. My comment about 60 degrees sounding pretty good was meant solely to be a light-hearted comment on the current cold weather a good bit of the US is experiencing. I think you took it as a criticism, which is not how I intended it at all.

Nope, just added that rejoinder as part of the conversation. I sympathize with your single digit temps! Hope you keep warm this weekend, especially. I hope nothing catastrophic happens in the northeast. I'm a Texan and last February was horrible, being without power or water for days in freezing weather, with no way to flee due to frozen roads, no sanding of roads, etc. I wouldn't wish that on anyone and hope it doesn't occur up north this weekend.

I grew up in Oklahoma and have a ton of family in TX. Hopefully what happened to you all last Feb won't ever happen again. Ice storms are so much worse than just snow. I felt so bad for all of you. I live in Ohio now, but lived in Massachusetts for a few years after college. First winter there we were hit with over a foot of snow overnight. I was teaching at a elementary school and thought we'd have a snow day, but nope. School started at same time like no big deal. Kids all brought their snow gear for recess. Roads were clear. In Oklahoma school would have been canceled if we had gotten an inch or 2. Lol. I feel bad for everyone getting off the Fantasy today. Anyone flying home is going to have a nightmare with delayed/canceled flights because of the snowstorm. When we got off our Jan 2020 cruise a huge snow/ice storm had hit a large part of the country. Everyone on the bus to the airport were on their phones trying to find flights home. Glad our next cruise isn't until March.

I hate the cold. I live in Texas. It's cold to me today, and it's in the 60s. We did a February cruise once, and it felt so cold. It was very windy going out of and back to Galveston, so that didn't help. If I did a winter cruise again, I would have to know that I would be sitting inside a lot. I actually don't mind sitting in my room and looking out the balcony though. I guess a Very Merry Time cruise could get me to cruise in winter, or a NYE cruise. Otherwise, I'm fine with the heat, even the humid, muggy heat that everyone hates in the summer in the Caribbean.

It boggles mind that just 3 days ago I was enjoying 78 degree sunny weather on CC and today it is 15 degrees and we just got 6 inches of snow. Take be back.......

Florida is typically much warmer in winter than Texas. If you ever want to sail in winter again, I recommend you sail out of Miami. In winter it's significantly warmer there than even in Port Canaveral, and much warmer than Galveston.
