I have not seen the traveling show, but I have seen it on Broadway. My dd is 11 tomorrow and she's just now at an age where I'd take her to see this show. There are some very scary parts for young kids. I'd have to think the traveling version is tamed down.
i think you have to know your kids. It can be very dark, and i think a lot of the humor will probably go over their heads. i suggest checking out the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire, which the show is *loosely* based on, but you'll get the general gist of what's happening with the characters.
If your children have seen the original movie, complete with the scary WW of the West, houses landing on people, a talking scarecrow, lion and tinman, and really scary flying monkeys (which I think is the scariest part of Oz), they are likely up to the "scare factor" in Wicked. Some of the jokes and the political satire (think of something similar to parts of "Animal Farm") might be a bit over their heads.
Hi Kim, our girls are avid readers and DD12 wanted to read the book. We wouldn't let her read the book. The book is not appropriate for kids. That being said, DW and I saw Wicked without the girls even though they really, really wanted to go. We wanted a date night, and we weren't sure it would be for the kids. However, after we saw it, we both said that the musical is perfectly appropriate for kids. They would have loved it.
Hi, I took my son to see Wicked in Kansas City when he was 13. He had read the book and was also familiar with the music as he had been listening to it before we went to the play. He has seen lots of broadway shows and was a little bored with Wicked. It's slow in places and that is what he didn't like. As far as content goes, it is totally kid appropriate.
I don't think there is any reason kids shouldn't see it. But I add the caveat that my standards for kid-friendly are a lot more lax than most DISers'.
I think that some kids would enjoy it and others would find it horribly boring. Hard to say without knowing the kid in question...and then taking them, lol.
Personally, at 7 & 9 I wouldn't take them to this show. Not that the content isn't appropriate -it is fine. I just wouldn't spend the money at that age, I think it's better invested several years down the road at a slightly older age -but if you have the money go for it. While they may appreciate it now, they will appreciated it much more several years from now.
I saw the original Broadway production with Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. It was great. DH wasn't crazy about seeing it but left saying it was a great show. I don't think children will have a problem with it. In a way it's better for them then the Wizard of Oz because the wicked witch isn't so wicked.
