Hi! I put an offer in for BLT but do to previous reservations we can't close until end of June. How hard will it be to get a studio any 6 consecutive days in any part of jan that late? Also plan to go the first 1-2 wks n dec 16 booking at the 11 month window. If I don't have enough points for both how dies renting wirk? Would I need to rent from a fellow BLT owner? Like 30 points or so?

With the exception of New Years and MLK weekend, January isn't typically overly crowded. You should be okay to find something six months out.

For your second trip, you have several options. The easiest is to borrow your own points from the next use year. You can do this as part of the booking process, either online or when booking by phone with member services. If you're still shy a few points even after your maximum banking/borrowing, another option is Disney's one-time-use points. You can purchase up to 24 extra points at $15 per point directly from DVC when booking. You need to do this on the phone, as there are no provisions to do it when booking online. You are permitted one transaction of one-time-use points per use year.

If that still doesn't get you there, you can use the rent/trade board here on DISboards or a points rental agent like dvcrentals.com to put you in touch with a member who is looking to rent some of their points. This is a private transaction between you and that other party, and Disney will not get involved if there's a dispute. For this reason, you need to be cautious of fraud. Read the stickies on the rent/trade board, and be an aware buyer. Caveat emptor!

As a member, you'll have two types of rental to consider. You can either find a renter who's willing to transfer the points from their account directly into yours, or have another member book some of the nights of your vacation using their points.

With a transfer transaction, you are the one who books the reservation and controls everything. You can mix & match your points and theirs on the reservation. (If booking at the 11-month point, you'd need to find someone with BLT points to rent.) The down side to transfers is that DVC only allows you one per year (either a transfer in, or a transfer out. Not both.) For this reason, someone with a lot of points they're looking to rent will want to find a member who wants them all. You may find it difficult to find someone who only needs to get rid of 20-30 points.

The other type of rental, the one that's more typical, is to have the other member book some of the nights for your trip using their points. That member retains control of the booking, and member services will only speak with them regarding that booking. You can still do an online check-in, but any other pre-arrival transaction would need to be coordinated through the other owner. You can link the reservation made with your points with the reservation made by the other member. This will allow you to stay in the same room for the entire stay. However, they are still separate reservations, and you'll need to physically do a check-out/check-in at the front desk on the cross-over day.

Thank you thank you!! I had no idea about the up to 24 I can just buy from Disney-! That will be perfect as we will be just a few short if we wanted to stay full weeks! :-)

The previous poster forgot to mention that you can only buy those points at 7 months or less-you cannot use them in conjunction with the home resort advantage period-so if you want to book the whole trip prior to the 7 month window opening you will only be able to use your own points or rent/transfer points from another BLT owner

Ahhh gotcha! I will need them 11 months out but is it possibly to buy those for my 1st trip in Jan even if I'm not technically out of points? I have no choice but to book out only 7 months for that one do to my closing date. That way I can save what's left and borrow from my june use yr points for my dec trip booking in feb? Or do you have to be out of points to use that option

You can buy the OTU points for your January trip. However, MS doesn't like to sell those if you have current use year points available. To get around this, you may have to make a "placeholder" reservation to use up the points you will need for the December 2016 trip. Then call MS to buy the OTU points and book the January trip. After you hang up, you can go back online and cancel the "placeholder" trip. The points will go back to your account and you will be ready to use them when the booking window opens for your December 2016 trip. MAKE SURE the "placeholder" reservation is several months away from the day you make it - if you cancel a reservation less than 31 days away, the points come back in "Holding Status". You can't use holding points to make a reservation that is more than 60 days in the future - holding points will not be usable to book BLT 11 months in advance!

NOTE: The 11 month window for an early December trip opens in January (not February). Sounds like you bought a contract with a February use year. You do NOT have to wait until 2/1/2016 to use those points to book a December 2016 trip. If you haven't already, take a look at this thread:

Oh yes jan not feb for 11 m ok. My use yr is june. I want to borrow from 16 PTs for jan and borrow from 17 for my dec 16 trip I know seems silly but I'm only buying 70 points bc it's what w can afford and really really want BLT home resort rather than more points elsewhere. We plan on picking up more points hopefully next year to! Thanks this is all so helpful!

And we just got back on 3/27 from wdw! Knew I wanted dvc so figured buy what we can now and add to it rather than save and save lol

From what I saw this year that second weekend of Jan. 2015, was booked pretty solidly as well, undoubtedly due to it being marathon weekend. I was keeping an eye out for openings as I wanted to try out a different DVC resort for my last 3 nights and looking @ the traditionally easier to book 1 br.s and never saw availability. But I only checked about once a day and was looking for BWV, BCV or VGF, so don't know about BLT specifically.

Also if your use year is June you are using 2015 points to book your jan 2016 reservation and book 7 months or less out you can simply buy the 16 points you need from MS to book that trip leaving 16 more in your 2016 allotment.

So my offer was accepted!! That's the thing there's only 15 points coming june 15 yikes! So now I'm considering just saving that w 16 and borrow from 17 to give me 155 PTs at the 11 m mark for nxt dec- maybe a theme park view studio! Would love that. And considering just renting our jan PTs from a member OR buying the 24, use 15 and borrow the remaining needed from 16 to book a boardwalk studio (76) leaving me just enough for a standard studio in dec. decisions! Already know im going to buying more points down the road lol

You may have just had a bad experience with MS. I've bought OTUP a few times now. Each time I had current points available & they didn't give me any trouble with it.

That's good to hear. :)

The CM I spoke to when I wanted to buy the OTU points (but still had points remaining) had to check with a supervisor first but then proceeded to allow me to purchase the points.

Keep in mind that there are a limited # of standard view BWV studios so I would have a backup plan because from what I have read it can be hard to get those at 7 months-just took a quick look at jan 2016 and only about 50% of January currently has avail for standard view studios at BWV-being that your booking window doesn't open until June (and it sounds like you won't be able to book until early July if you close at the end of June) I wouldn't think your chances of standard view are very good for 6 consecutive days

Thank you all! I went w a higher points contract to meet my needs! Now the paibful slow closing process begins:) also rented points to stay 11-1 for 4 nites incase we run into trouble looking for a studio in late jan.

I purchased OTU points in 3 separate transactions this year. MS stated that the rule has changed to allow 24 OTU points be purchased as needed. Meaning that if you wanted to you could purchase 1 point 24 separate times in the same UY. It does not limit you to one transaction anymore

YEAH! Yes, indeed, I just checked the Guidelines on OTU Points -- and confirmed this is true! THANK YOU for posting this update!
