Vertigo after Cruise??

I had it for almost a month after my Apt 2016 cruise. Someone on here (Princess Schmoo I believe) called it land sickness. It seemed to happen mostly when I turned my head too quickly or when I moved my head in more than one axis, such as looking down while turning it. It would also feel like the ground was moving when I walked. But I realized that I was constantly looking around while walking. I started making it a point to concentrate on one place and then another till I got to my destination. This seemed to lessen the dizziness.
It called Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (or MdDS). Basically motion sickness on land as your inner ear re-adjusts to the ground not moving.

It's not unusual for someone to get it. And there's no rhyme or reason as to who will get it. Some people get it every time they cruise. I've had it after about half of our cruises. Some of those cruises were long, some were short. A few had choppy seas, most were pretty smooth.

Typically it lasts 3-7 days for most people, but can last longer (I had it for about a month after our first Alaska cruise).

So glad I found this thread! I never felt motion sick on the cruise itself, but disembarked 3 days ago and my head still spins every time I look around. Happy to know I'm not the only one. Fingers crossed it'll go away on its own soon. Maybe try some of my wife's leftover Dramamine.

Yes, this has happened to me but not to the point of passing out! I think I have had more motion sickness coming off of a cruise than actually being on one.

This is me. Although I don't have any motion sickness while onboard. It does take me at least a week to adjust to being back on land.

Mine was bad for about two weeks, even fainted at work one day, but then it did indeed go away!

I have had vertigo and was bedridden for 3 days with it until I found someone to do the magic vertigo movement on me. But I did not feel anything, either on the ship or off the ship. Now, my family, who've never experienced vertigo? They commented about the land sickness for 3 or 4 days. I also take an antihistamine daily, so maybe that was the secret that helped me? Who knows.

Same here, no motion sickness on ship but as soon as I get home. Last about week. The bathroom in the WORST .

As someone who worried about whether it'd ever go away--it totally did. I think mine lingered because I pushed myself too hard and got sick after my trip, but I want to say it was gone within two weeks.

I've had this following 2 of my 4 cruises. It's usually worse while sitting still - sleeping or sitting at a computer (which I do all day), but is better when driving as it simulates the motion. Last time, it was bad as I had a head cold - the doc said the mucus swirling around was probably making the re-linking in y inner ear take longer so prescribed something to dry up the drips, worked like a charm. He had also suggested gravol but Ididn't need it. Had nothing on the ship in terms of seasickness and wasn't on meds for that either so it's weird who gets it and who doesn't. My husband laughed at me the first time when I was convinced they had build the bottom of the pool on a slant as Ijust couldn't stand upright in the pool, lol. I also would lean while walking down long hallways, lol. No one else is my family has complained about it.

I only had it after my first cruise when I wore the patch. After I took it off I was sick and dizzy for a week. I had it on for 11 days. Never again!

I have the same problem with noticing it more in the bathroom. I don't know why the bathroom, except that the bathrooms in the staterooms are so small. And yet, my bathroom at home is actually quite large. Very strange. I'm glad that I'm not the only one. It does go away, though, and has never interfered with my daily routine.

In my experience its very random. I had it for a few days after our first Carribbean cruise on the Fantasy. I had it for 2 weeks after Alaska (which was the least rocky cruise). We just got off the 14 day WBPC (with a few rocky days) and I didn't have it at all. Go figure.

Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (or MdDS) is an imbalance or rocking/swaying sensation often both “felt” and “seen” by the sufferer that occurs after exposure to motion (most commonly after a sea cruise or a flight). Although other forms of travel have been known to trigger it.

Yes, I too have this happen after every cruise. I am fine during the cruise regardless of how rough & bumpy the seas get. Within an hour of getting off the ship, it’s starts. Sometimes it’s a week & at the worst about a month.
I just ride it out until it goes away.
Good luck, it is a weird feeling to be standing totally still & feel like you are moving! I believe it affects more women than men.
