Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place for this post but here goes.
We are staying at Vero for 4 nights in December and thought we might spend a day in the Fort Lauderdale area and wondered if anyone could give us some driving directions for a "scenic" route along the coast if possible.

Thanks.

Mick.

A scenic route would be heading straight down highway A1A, wouldn't it? You might hit some congested areas. I'd try mapquest.com to get an idea of the length of time. Thier route of I-95 is Total Distance: 2 hours, 21 minutes for 128.88 miles, not a far as I thought

Going through Palm Beach and Boca Raton would be nice.

Enjoy your trip.

LOL! I was playing with Mapquest while you were posting Captain.

Captain is absolutely right that going down A1A (the road that runs in front of the Vero resort) would be the most scenic. However, it will probably take close to twice as long to make the trip to Ft. Lauderdale than it will by getting on I-95. Mapquest puts the direct I-95 route at 2 hours 44 minutes from the resort. You might want to play it by ear and see how the time is going. Roads that take you south are A1A, Route 1 (commercial with lots of traffic lights), I-95 and Florida's Turnpike. I believe sometimes A1A and Route 1 become the same as you are navigating some barrier islands (such as Hutchinson Island). The ride from Vero to Stuart is lovely. It's also worth taking a look at Palm Beach.

We took a week before heading to Disney, last Feb/March and traveled down the East Coast from Cocoa Beach to Ft. Lauderdale. A1A is definitely the road you want, very scenic, and places range from very posh to something that looks like it's out of the fifties....... It's pretty cool.

Enjoy!

I have taken a1a from palm beach to Ft. lauderdale--very scenic and a much longer thanI95. there are some beautiful homes and sight particularly btwn. Palm beach and Delray Beach.

When you get to Ft. Lauderdale, take the Jungle Queen cruise. thay have a Bar-b-que option we did not do. the tour of the canals is great. we also eat at the 16th Street Fisheries. Pricey-but excellent. Not really a place for kids.

I think someone may have mentioned that you may not be able to take a1a without getting off of the islands over the intercoastal and back onto the mainland. this give you an option to get on 95 or any of the other road heading South, if you want to save time. You can always go back to A1A when you want.
