Hi. We are planning to head to VB next summer after a few days at WDW. My high schoolers love trying surfing but are definitely beginners. (Have had a few introductory lessons on trips to NC beaches, but are able to catch waves if not too rough).

the last time we visited VB in March the ocean was really rough and had steep drop off areas, but it may have been a time following a fall hurricane when the overall topography of the beaches had changed in general. We also remember bottom was very rocky and less sandy than we planned.

Has anyone tried surfing there recently? Or for boogie boarding is there still a really steep drop off or is it a good place for boogie boarding? Also is the beach area still very rocky or is it sandy into the water?

We had a wonderful time at the resort with all the activities last time, but didn’t spend as much time in the ocean due to rockiness of beach and very rough surf tide. Now that my kids are older I know they will want to use the beach/ocean much of the time.

Thanks!!

We have been to DVB around 10 times or so and do not consider it to be rocky at all. It's actually shells that can be prickly under foot near the shorebreak, if that's what you mean. There are a ton of shells there(!) Surfing right out front of the resort is not the best spot in the area because it's very hit and miss based on weather (moreso than more reliable breaks) -- although you can actually get some good days to surf there, but the break is close to shore so short rides. It's great for boogie boarding and even skimming in some spots. The better and more reliable spot for surfing in our experience is to head to Sebastian Inlet State Park where the break can be more consistent. It's a short drive from DVB and just an all around great beach (usually not very busy).
