My wife, son (11), brother's family (with two girls, 13 and 9), and I will be staying st the DVC Vero Beach Resort Oct 18 - 21st. This is our first trip to the resort and to the overall Vero Beach area.

We are looking for recommendations for things to do, both on-site and off-site. Please give us your best recommendations, tips, and secrets for things to do, where to eat, etc. Also, any good fishing tips and recommendations?

Check the daily schedule of activities. There are so many things to do. There are equipment/chair rentals on the beach. Evening fire with marshmallow toasting. The resort is in Sebastian north of VB proper. Lots of restaurants, shops, outlet center near I95 west of Vero Beach proper. One of our favorite things is a stop at Abbott's Frozen Custard on 20th St in VB heading toward I 95. A bit of a trip but totally worth it. (They started in Rochester, NY!)
The Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is in Ft. Pierce south of VB. They have a visitors center with programs.
VB is on the 'Treasure Coast'Lots of shipwrecks offshore and the Mel Fisher Treasure Museum is nearby in Sebastian. I am not sure but you may be able to rent a metal detector nearby. You won't be there in sea turtle egg laying/hatching season but they may have a program describing it.
I love VB-great resort. I like driving down A1A and looking at 'how the other half lives' in large condos and private homes. HAve fun.

Can you Metal Detect on Vero Beach ?

I have seen people using metal detectors on the beach at VB. The beaches are public. Once you cross onto the beach it is public.

If the beaches are public, is surf fishing allowed there?

Also, I see that there are bike rentals. Are there good bike paths, for kids and adults alike?

There are bike paths. We have ridden on The Historic Jungle Trail.

There is a manatee center in Fort Pierce. Sometimes there are quite a lot of them there and other times there are none, it depends on the time of year, but there is a little touch tank area and displays there. Also interesting is the inlet in Fort Pierce where the river and ocean meet. You can walk out on the jetty there and a lot of people fish there along with a lot of Pelicans looking for a handout. Downtown beach area has some great shops. If you are looking for restaurants Riverside Grill in Vero is very good, also MoBay in Sebastian is different but the food is great and a great sandwich place is the Red Onion in Vero.
We will be in Vero this year Oct 26-30 can'T wait. We love it there.

I would check with the hotel. I know that fishing does occur at Vero Beach (with a fishing license) but I don't know exactly where or what time of year.
