Jsantini....IMHO
I am at Vero now and have been for the last 2 weeks. This is my 1st time here & last.
I live by the Atlantic Ocean in NJ and know how dangerous the waters can be.
That said, I sadly see no difference in the water color or wave action here and the drop off's to deeper water come up quickly. Only the palm trees show me I'm in Fla.
When I have stayed in the Ft. Lauderdale area or further south on many occasions.....the water is gorgeous with many combinations of blue color....and the waves very calm and you can walk a fairly long distance into the surf..safely.
This is "not" the place to have kids on the beach besides there's no lifeguards. If you want to only get your toes wet & make sand castles...then OK.
If I were splitting a stay...taking kids....I would definitely do the "west coast". There's sooo much more to do and the Gulf is beautiful, wonderful & calm.
I agree about the color of the water and drop offs during this time of year. I visited Vero the first time in January and vowed never again. Like you, I noticed the similiarities to the beaches here in RI and prefer the beaches of South Florida. But with that said, we stayed in Vero in August and what a huge difference! The water was much more blue, did not notice any drop offs, but that will change with the tides. We had a great time and will go again this June. I'll post a pic if I can.
