for those who make calls at sea, do you prefer the Verizon Cellular at sea or the package purchased on board?

I have Verizon and have no issue using WiFi calling, so I've never needed the cellular at sea.

The one time I had to make a call while on a ship, I just used WiFi calling (using the ship's paid WiFi).

The price of the packages for internet goes down each day of the sailing so you can buy it at any point. Our concierge host pointed this out to us, especially since you are in port most embarkation day you may not need to purchase it on the first day. I think we ended up getting our internet package on the 3rd day of one sailing because the other days were port days where we could get cell service and was $60 cheaper than buying it on the first day. We also only bought the one device as you can share it among more devices only one can be using it at a time with the login credentials you set up. You can also kick off someone else using it on a different device, I did this all the time to our teens when I needed to check business emails. My husband was thrilled it allowed him to keep his Duolingo streak.

you take it off airplane mode when making calls?
WiFi calling means you place all your calls (and text) over WiFi while in airplane mode. Set it up (and test it) before you leave home. In my opinion, WiFi calling should default to On and it would save people so much trouble and expense. Cellular At Sea is a HUGE rip off. Use Verizon's Travel Pass instead. While in a port, you can turn off airplane mode and when your phone connects to the local cellular network, it will ask if you want to use Travel Pass. Most countries are $5 or $10 for 24 hours of access using the same terms (data limits/rates) as your normal plan. If you do this at say 1PM in port A, you would have full cellular/data access in port A for the rest of the afternoon until the ship departs AND you would have access in port B in the morning when you arrive at that port. Use WiFi while on the ship/overnight and Travel Pass off the ship/during the day.
