Verizon WWYD

Unfortunately with my existing phone I can only have the 9.99 plan. It isn't even an option for unlimited.

DH has the EnV Touch and I have the Samsung Rougue. We were thinking about adding a line and getting DS a cell phone for Christmas...not a smart phone but maybe a step down.

DH and I have the 75 MB for $10.00 data plan and we were thinking about doing the same for DS. Now that that plan is going away, should we just bite the bullet and get DS's now and upgrade our (DH and mine, not DS) data plans to unlimited?

Next question: as existing customers, if DH and I down the road in November when our plan comes up for renewal upgrades to smartphones, will that cancel out our unlimited usage or will we be grandfathered in?

I realize that all the info isn't available yet, but I'm a little confused about all this.

What I'm thinking about doing is changing MY phone's data plan (LG EnVTouch 9.99 for 25mb) to unlimited for 29.99, then when my contract is up in September, upgrading to the Droid/Iphone.

Caution

I was thinking same BUT I have found out this will not work for that type of phone.
It has to be a smart phone. The LG Env Touch is considered a feature phone not a smart phone. If you do that, once you go to the smartphone in September you will then lose unlimited and have to go to the tier plan.

My contract is up July 4th. I have been wanting an Iphone but didnt see the sense in getting the Iphone 4 when the 5 is just around the corner.
Problem is no june release this year. Maybe September...maybe

edited: am tryin to find the links where I read that.

If that's the case, then we'll just keep on, keepin' on and re-evaluate when our contract comes up. DH and I also have feature phones, not smartphones, so we're in the same boat and it does us no good to change now.

Call verizon and see what they tell you.

I love love love love love my Android. I'm on #2 - not because #1 was bad, but because I couldn't wait to get the new one.

I went from the HTC "G1", to the HTC "G2" - both TMobile, both Google phones.

I flipping love my Android.

If you want info, here it is. These are leaked copies of the training materials that Verizon is sending to "indirect" retailers like BestBuy.

For those who have a feature phone, but are thinking they'll eventually want to upgrade to have unlimited data, they need to do so by July 7th. This is a quote from the training material in the above link. Notice the part I bolded:

Existing customer KEEP their $29.99 unlimited data plan

If an existing customer upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone after 7/7/11, they will NOT be able to add on the unlimited data package. They must choose from the new data plans.

Anyone who sets up new service with unlimited data, upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone with unlimited data, or customer currently on the $29.99 before July, 7, 2011 will be grandfathered in.

These changes also apply to employee plans as well (personal accounts w/work discounts applied)

SO, This is a huge time for us to set our customers up with the right package for them! We only have 14 DAYS remaining for unlimited data, and until the new data pricing takes effect. (14 days to setup new customers w/unlimited data, and customers upgrading from a feature phone to a smart phone)

PLEASE, PLEASE make sure we take advantage of this heads up and get our heavy data users set up on these unlimited plans before they change.

Please call, text or e-mail me any questions or concerns you might have.

We were going to get our DD a droid for Christmas this year. Right now she just has a feature phone with no data plan. Looks like we have to do the upgrade now to get the unlimited data because if we wait past July 7th, we won't be grandfathered in.

Yeah thats the link I was looking for.

So yeah I have to decide if I want the Iphone 4 now with unlimited or wait for the Iphone 5 and only get 2GB for the same dollar amount.

I have no idea how much 2 GB of data actually is though.

I like my old iphone better than my husband's Droid. It is personal preference. I just find the iphone more user friendly. (I am not a techy).

I'm not techy either and OMG I LOVE my Droid X!!! By far the easiest and funnest phone I have ever had!!!! I went from a feature phone to a smart phone and WOW! I was waffling between the iPhone and Droid X, I'm sooooooooo glad I went with the X!

Good news.... existing customers won't be affected even if you upgrade/renew down the road (however adding new lines won't be grandfathered).

if this is true this is good news!!! We have 4 lines already, no house phone, just the 4 cells.

Verizon has a data calculator: http://www.verizonwireless.com/splash_includes/datacalculator.html
My only problem is it's only a guess. I don't upload pictures/check email/web surf because my phone doesn't do any of the above very well. So it's hard to guess HOW I would use it.

I have a stupid question from a voice-only Verizon user:

Is the cost of unlimited $29.99 per line? We currently have a family plan with two lines, soon to be three.

Yes, it is per line-if you have a smartphone on each line. We have 2 smart phones and 3 dumb phones and have two charges for $29.99 (well, actually $24.99 because we get a corporate discount).

As for data-uploading photos is a HUGE Data drain. I never do that from my phone but I use it to surf the web, GPS, tether my laptop (with a app, not through Verizon), get emails, etc. I have yet to use even 1GB, let alone 2. If I used it more for work, uploaded photos to facebook, etc. that would be different. DD has the 9.99 plan and uses more data than I do on my Droid because she uploads photos to facebook from her phone, on a limited basis so she doesn't go over her usage, but she gets close every month (she tracks it on her phone).

We are going to stop by our Verizon store this morning and look into all of this.

OK, went to the verizon store today. Had a bunch of questions for them but specifically-if we added unlimited data to DD's Chocolate Touch now, would we be grandfathered in. He called the "main number" and verified that YES, we would be grandfathered in. There is a new Iphone coming out in the fall and we figure we can get a good deal on the Iphone 4 when that happens (DD uses her Ipod A LOT) otherwise she is happy getting a Droid then. We can keep an eye out for deals now and 4 of our 5 phones are eligible for upgrades in October :thumbsup2.

My son has an ENV Touch3. I added the unlimited plan to that so he would be grandfathered in come upgrade time (September). But I read upthread it's a feature phone and not a smartphone. What did the Chocolate Touch fall under?

No, we have to do it before the 7th because DD has an older feature phone that does not support the $29.99 data plan. We are both eligible for an upgrade now, but I was going to wait until Christmas to bite the bullet for her. DH and I are fine with just keeping feature phones for our use because we don't need to be connected all day long. DS won't be getting data access until he's DD age, so we have 3 years on him. I'm a teacher and too busy during the day to be pulling my phone out -- not to mention we have a cell phone policy at school (can't use them).

I have friends who can't keep their phones out of their hands. It's impossible to have a nice conversation with them over lunch because they keep checking their iphones to read facebook, twitter, etc...

Sometimes I feel like screaming, "Put your darn phone away!!!!!" It really does get ridiculous.

You know, I don't know. I am going to say a Feature Phone but other's will know better. I don't think it is a true smart phone--it's nothing like a Droid, Blackberry or Iphone.

I don't know if this is an option or not, but might be worth exploring...
1) Upgrade your phone to a 'smart phone' with the unlimited data now.
2) "transfer" your feature phone to your DD (this is the part I'm not sure about).
3) Add the $29.99 unlimited data to your feature phone (now used by your DD)
4) In December, upgrade DD to a smart phone.

Again, I don't know if this will work or not. My idea is to get you and DD on the $29.99 plan now.

I never came close to using 2GB while I had an android phone; my average was 400-500 mb per month.

However, I just switched to an iPhone which has the Netflix app, so I can now watch movies in my instant queue wherever I am. I still have 6 days to go till the end of this billing cycle and I have used 2.3 GB.

Thank goodness I am grandfathered into the unlimited plan :rotfl:

I know Verizon still has the right to increase the cost of the unlimited plan but AT&T hasn't done that to their grandfathered customers yet (that I'm aware of) so I'm not going to worry about that until I have to.

I planned on waiting for the Iphone5 before I bought the data plan.
What if they increase the price of the current $29.99 unlimited in a few months? Then all the buying the phones before 7/7 maybe useless. :confused3
