Verizon WWYD

Hmmm. They didn't mention it to me and I was just there today. I'd gotten a new Droid Incredible a month ago and am considering giving my other Droid to my DS15 so I wanted to ask if it was possible.

Hopefully we are grandfathered in but if not, then my kids will just have to learn to text less or risk losing their phones.

I planned on waiting for the Iphone5 before I bought the data plan.
What if they increase the price of the current $29.99 unlimited in a few months? Then all the buying the phones before 7/7 maybe useless. :confused3

Not useless, just maybe more expensive. The base place has been leaked to be $29.99 for 2GB of usage so you can switch to that. The price isn't so much the issue as the UNLIMITED data is--especially now that Netflix is available on the Droid and Iphones.

Their texting shouldn't affect their data usuage any and as far as I know this change is only with the unlimited data plans not unlimited texting plans.

I found out the phone they are offering me is a LG Vortez. Reading reviews, I see it is pretty good for someone like me just getting into a smart phone. I read that it has a lot of apps that you can't get rid of. Anyone have one?

I do not have that phone but I did have an LG Ally and yes there were a ton of apps that I couldn't get rid of and more were added with each Android update.

The LG Ally's internal memory was horrible and I was getting a low memory message about every other day. With each new update I had to get rid of apps I wanted so they could add apps that I didn't. I could only download new apps if they could be moved over to the SD card, which wasn't many

Make sure whichever phone you get has a large internal memory or you will be having the same problems.

I don't know if this is an option or not, but might be worth exploring...
1) Upgrade your phone to a 'smart phone' with the unlimited data now.
2) "transfer" your feature phone to your DD (this is the part I'm not sure about).
3) Add the $29.99 unlimited data to your feature phone (now used by your DD)
4) In December, upgrade DD to a smart phone.

Again, I don't know if this will work or not. My idea is to get you and DD on the $29.99 plan now.

That would be an option, but I don't want to pay an extra $60 a month. I don't even want to pay the extra $30 for one phone, but I know it's coming eventually so I might as well upgrade her to unlimited data now vs paying the same price for much less usage later on (and worrying if she's going to accidentally go over that).

So I went ahead and looked up the specs on the LG Vortex and it says it has 150 mb of internal memory. My LG Ally came with 102 mb of internal memory and after the last update I was only able to have around 10 app of my own choosing, everything else was reguired apps and I only used a couple of them.

I would try to get a phone with more memory if I were you.

Do you have the option of adding a memory card to expand that?

Yeah but that didn't help with the apps unless the app could be moved to the SD card. Most of the ones I liked couldn't. Emails and text messages couldn't be moved over either, so every other day I was deleting things that I wanted to keep, just so I could have the apps Verizon and Android decided I needed. To make things even more fun, some of the apps they thought I needed required a monthly subscription to even use, so they were completely useless.

Taking pictures was about the only thing I could do with my phone toward the end. I had plenty of memory on my SD card for pictures.

Needless to say I'm really enjoying the 16 GB of memory my iPhone has. I'm downloading apps all over the place and still have a ton of memory left.

There are plenty of Android based phones with much better internal memory so if a person doesn't want to switch to Apple they still have options, just make sure to look at the specs before buying any phone.

I think you're looking at the wrong line. The line you bolded said if you upgrade from feature to smart and ADD unlimited data after 7/7, you're on the tiered plan. Look at the next line...
So if you're on the $29.99 plan before 7/7, you get grandfathered in.

I don't think so. I think if you add the $29.99 plan NOW to the feature phone, you'll get grandfathered in when you upgrade.

See I have read in a couple places that it has to be a 29.99 plan on a smart phone.

That unlimited plans on a feature phone would not grandfather in when you upgraded to the smart phone. :confused3

Don't know. I'm just basing it on what is posted (if a customer is on the $29.99 plan on 7/7, they get grandfathered in). It doesn't say "if a smart phone customer". Also, haven't all smart phones REQUIRED the $29.99 plan?

I have a droid and I use it a lot more than I ever expected to - feel free to PM me with any questions you have. :)

I definitely use the unlimited internet like crazy. I can stay on top of emails and other important information without having to go to a desktop to get it.

The big thing is that with things like the amazon app, you can scan a barcode on an item in a store and see if it really is a good deal. (We have prime, so if something is at least $1 cheaper, its worth it to just order it on amazon instead.)

When we were in WDW, I could change and obtain reservations easily. I managed to change a dinner reservation and get us into the dessert party for that night while on a monorail ride from Epcot to the MK when my friend showed up unexpectedly.

I just cannot tell you how much you will find yourself using it and relying on it once you have access to it.

It would have been nice if Verizon actually communicated this to their customers, you know, the ones they even exist to support.

I'm not against tiering, but notification timeline is important. I'm grandfathered in right now (for the two lines), but I was thinking of getting a new phone in September, I might just have to do it this weekend to ensure I'm grandfathered in still (Note: There are rumors that upgrading to a new phone on an existing unlimited data plan will not reset the unlimited, but who knows if that will hold true).

I personally use about 1GB a month of data, but my partner runs about 8GB a month (Netflix and Pandora are data killers).

With AT&T, I was on the unlimited plan. When they went tiered, I was grandfathered. I got my new Windows Phone in April and they tried to talk me into going to the tiered plan. I told them they could take my unlimited plan when they pried it from my cold, dead fingers. :lmao:

AT&T allows those grandfathered to keep the plan. I hope for your sake Verizon does the same.

I went to two different Verizon stores and got two completely opposite answers. The first guy told me that I would be grandfathered in with my feature phone if I went to unlimited now, but I'd have to go to the tiered plan if/when I upgraded to a smart phone. The second guy told me that I would be grandfathered in and would keep my grandfathered status even if I switched/upgraded to a smart phone. The first guy said that I wouldn't be grandfathered in because the unlimited for a feature phone is a different code than the unlimited for a smart phone.

So....no help there. At the second store, I went ahead and went to unlimited data for $29.99 for my and DH's feature phone. In November, we are eligible to upgrade. If we aren't grandfathered in with unlimited, then we probably won't upgrade and we'll definitely shop around to other carriers. We'll also go back to $10.00 for 75MB if that is still available for feature phones.

Don't know if this helps anyone, but that's my experience! We'll know for sure next week!

I planned on waiting for the Iphone5 before I bought the data plan.

It would not surprise me at all if they increased the price. Isn't the top tier $80.00? What would that make unlimited...around $100.00? If they did, we'd be sunk...we can't afford that. We'd have to do the 2GB for $29.99.

So I got what I'm pretty sure is the correct scoop regarding upgrading a feature phone to unlimited data and then getting grandfathered in to the $29.99 data plan and switching later to a smart phone.

It won't work. I talked to three different Verizon people today (after talking to two different people yesterday who said it would work) the ones I spoke to today (including a store manager) assured me it would not work because the code in the computer is different on a feature phone vs a smart phone.

Then, I came home and read a thread on slickdeals reiterating that same information. You can go to slickdeals.com and find the thread (I found it on the front page of the forum). I also found this link (from one of the posts on slickdeals):

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06/24/more-on-verizons-tiered-data-plans-and-how-long-you-get-to-stay-unlimited/

The above link shows other training material information that was not posted on this thread earlier.

The second box is for those of you with feature phone lines that have unlimited data - it’s looking like you won’t be so fortunate come July 7 and thereafter. Even if you have an unlimited plan on a “dumb” phone at this time, it apparently will not carry over to a new smartphone plan should you upgrade after the 6th. You’ll have to choose a tier if you decide to upgrade to a 3G or 4G smartphone.

So, you have to have a smartphone with unlimited data prior to 7/7 in order to keep the unlimited data plan for the $29.99 price. Just adding the unlimited data plan to a feature phone will not work. Bummer. :sad1:

There's still unlimited data if you use Virgin Mobile. I'm paying $25/month for 300 minutes cause I don't talk much and unlimited txt and 3G data, no contract. Most nights I put on pandora while sleeping and watch Youtube here and there.

Gosh I hope Verizon don't give VM ideas lol.

Bumping this to say thanks for posting this OP. We have a couple of changes we've been meaning to make. Need to change our account to my name (from DH's) coz I can get a corporate discount. I've also been debating on getting an Iphone for months. One of our lines is DS's iphone & he loves it. I don't "need" one, just would be a fun "toy". Couldn't decide if I wanted the monthly expense just for fun. My current cell phone is at least 7 - 8 years old & is really fine. I actually like it. But it would be good to be able to be online on trips or waiting places, etc.

Anyway, knowing the July 7th deadline has forced me to make a decision. Guess I'll be dragging DH to the mall after dinner to make these changes. He's got to go to sign over the account & phone numbers to me. Decided to take the plunge & get the iphone. I'll try it for the 2 year contract & see how it goes.

I was also considering dropping our home phone but transferring that number to be my cell, but I don't think I'd be able to get that done so quickly. Guess I'll have to wait in that one for now.

Thanks again for the info everyone! :)

Yeah so now I have to decide if its worth it to get the older current Iphone 4 with unlimited or wait JUST two more months and get the newer tech with the Iphone 5 but be stuck with 2GB limit :confused3
I think I would probably be happier with the newer technology.

I got my iPhone a little over a year ago. I was unlucky enough (or not ;) ) to wander into the AT&T store literally the day after they did away with their Unlimited Data Plan for new users. I had no clue about any of this but had fooled around with a friend's iPhone at a conference we were attending and decided I wanted to get one. (I still had a basic phone that didn't text or have a camera.)

Had I had the option of the unlimited plan, I probably would have gotten it. But it wasn't an option, so I had to decide between the 200MB and the 2GB plans. My corporate discount would only apply to the 2GB data plan and that brought it down to a little more than the cost of the 200MB, so it was a bit of a no brainer: ten times the data plus they explained that most users didn't come close to using 2GB anyway. I haven't come close.

One thing we learned was that you should download data to your computer and then synch it so as not to use the amount of data that downloading directly to your phone uses. I don't know how it works with non-iPhones but we learned this at the Apple store (they're really helpful there).

As others have mentioned, an iPhone is not something I needed to have, but it sure is fun and awfully handy, and I wouldn't be without one now.

Here's an article from last year which may be helpful to those trying to decide what to do.

Smartphone Users Should Celebrate AT&T Scrapping Unlimited Data
By Daniel Indiviglio

We knew this day was coming. AT&T announced today that it will no longer offer unlimited data plans for wireless customers. There's little doubt that many of its customers -- particularly iPhone users who love their data -- will be angered by this move. But really, the vast majority of mobile phone customers should be quite pleased.

For anyone new to AT&T, the following options will be provided for data:

DataPlus: 200 megabytes of data for $15 per month
Overage charge: $15 for each additional 200 MB of data

DataPro: 2 gigabytes of data for $25 per month
Overage charge: $10 for each additional 1GB of data

According to AT&T, 65% of its smartphone customers use less than 200MB per month, while 98% of its smartphone customers use less than 2GB per month.

Current AT&T customers pay $30 per month for an unlimited data plan. If you combine all that information above, you quickly learn that this change is only bad for 2% of AT&T smartphone customers -- the data hogs. Everyone else should manage to decrease the cost of their bill.

In fact, 2 gigabytes is an awful lot of data. Here's a chart from AT&T showing how much usage each plan would allow:

at%26t%20chart%202010-06.PNG

I consider myself virtually addicted to my iPhone. I obsessively check my e-mail on it (6 accounts!); I listen to streaming music as I walk to work; I surf the Internet fairly often; and I've got dozens of data-driven apps. Yet, going through my bills for the past several months, I can't find any month when my data usage exceeds 500 megabytes. So even though DataPlus wouldn't work for me, I would only be using one-quarter of the DataPro allotment and save $5 per month. Meanwhile, my fiancé isn't as big of a data user. Her monthly average is around 50MB. That means she could use DataPlus. This would reduce our combined monthly bill by $20.

According to AT&T's usage statistics above, our experience is not unusual. Most customers are much better off under this new pricing scheme. But that means AT&T is worse off in a sense -- it will collect less in fees. So why would it do this? Several reasons jump out.

First, this change is likely transitional. At this point, the service provider is just getting customers used to the idea of eliminating the unlimited data option. Eventually, it could raise its prices to levels that are more profitable for the company -- and less attractive to customers.

Second, AT&T is sticking it to the heavy data users. That 2% of users is obviously using far more than the average customer. Yet, these people are paying the same amount for their data plan. That doesn't make sense. AT&T wants these people to pay more or curb their usage. After all, anyone using more than 2GB of data per month is putting far more stress on the company's network than the average user.

Finally, think about psychology. Even if you know that you'll probably never exceed your 200 MB or 2GB plan, you may lower your usage a bit. When you go to an all-you-can-eat buffet, you almost certainly eat more than you normally would. After all, you have an incentive to eat as much as possible -- that's what you're paying for. But if you got a regular meal at a restaurant, you'd still be full, but probably not as stuffed. AT&T wants to translate this to data. Even though people aren't likely to go over their limit, they will behave differently knowing that their plan is no longer unlimited. Less data usage will improve network traffic.

Now that AT&T has broken the glass when it comes to charging for data, you can expect other service providers to follow. All are aching to do so, as they know that mobile data is the future, so there's much money to be made on it. Even though customers will hate it at first, the average smartphone user is better off at this point. They'll pay less and the data network will function more smoothly.
