Unfortunately with my existing phone I can only have the 9.99 plan. It isn't even an option for unlimited.
What I'm thinking about doing is changing MY phone's data plan (LG EnVTouch 9.99 for 25mb) to unlimited for 29.99, then when my contract is up in September, upgrading to the Droid/Iphone.
Caution
I was thinking same BUT I have found out this will not work for that type of phone.
It has to be a smart phone. The LG Env Touch is considered a feature phone not a smart phone. If you do that, once you go to the smartphone in September you will then lose unlimited and have to go to the tier plan.
My contract is up July 4th. I have been wanting an Iphone but didnt see the sense in getting the Iphone 4 when the 5 is just around the corner.
Problem is no june release this year. Maybe September...maybe
If that's the case, then we'll just keep on, keepin' on and re-evaluate when our contract comes up. DH and I also have feature phones, not smartphones, so we're in the same boat and it does us no good to change now.
Please let us know what you find out.edited: am tryin to find the links where I read that.
If you want info, here it is. These are leaked copies of the training materials that Verizon is sending to "indirect" retailers like BestBuy.
Existing customer KEEP their $29.99 unlimited data plan
If an existing customer upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone after 7/7/11, they will NOT be able to add on the unlimited data package. They must choose from the new data plans.
Anyone who sets up new service with unlimited data, upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone with unlimited data, or customer currently on the $29.99 before July, 7, 2011 will be grandfathered in.
These changes also apply to employee plans as well (personal accounts w/work discounts applied)
SO, This is a huge time for us to set our customers up with the right package for them! We only have 14 DAYS remaining for unlimited data, and until the new data pricing takes effect. (14 days to setup new customers w/unlimited data, and customers upgrading from a feature phone to a smart phone)
PLEASE, PLEASE make sure we take advantage of this heads up and get our heavy data users set up on these unlimited plans before they change.
Please call, text or e-mail me any questions or concerns you might have.
I like my old iphone better than my husband's Droid. It is personal preference. I just find the iphone more user friendly. (I am not a techy).
Good news.... existing customers won't be affected even if you upgrade/renew down the road (however adding new lines won't be grandfathered).
I think you're looking at the wrong line. The line you bolded said if you upgrade from feature to smart and ADD unlimited data after 7/7, you're on the tiered plan. Look at the next line...For those who have a feature phone, but are thinking they'll eventually want to upgrade to have unlimited data, they need to do so by July 7th. This is a quote from the training material in the above link. Notice the part I bolded:

I don't think so. I think if you add the $29.99 plan NOW to the feature phone, you'll get grandfathered in when you upgrade. We were going to get our DD a droid for Christmas this year. Right now she just has a feature phone with no data plan. Looks like we have to do the upgrade now to get the unlimited data because if we wait past July 7th, we won't be grandfathered in.
Verizon has a data calculator: http://www.verizonwireless.com/splash_includes/datacalculator.htmlI have no idea how much 2 GB of data actually is though.
I have a stupid question from a voice-only Verizon user:
Is the cost of unlimited $29.99 per line? We currently have a family plan with two lines, soon to be three.
OK, went to the verizon store today. Had a bunch of questions for them but specifically-if we added unlimited data to DD's Chocolate Touch now, would we be grandfathered in. He called the "main number" and verified that YES, we would be grandfathered in. There is a new Iphone coming out in the fall and we figure we can get a good deal on the Iphone 4 when that happens (DD uses her Ipod A LOT) otherwise she is happy getting a Droid then. We can keep an eye out for deals now and 4 of our 5 phones are eligible for upgrades in October.

My only problem is it's only a guess. I don't upload pictures/check email/web surf because my phone doesn't do any of the above very well. So it's hard to guess HOW I would use it.
My son has an ENV Touch3. I added the unlimited plan to that so he would be grandfathered in come upgrade time (September). But I read upthread it's a feature phone and not a smartphone. What did the Chocolate Touch fall under?
I don't know if this is an option or not, but might be worth exploring...No, we have to do it before the 7th because DD has an older feature phone that does not support the $29.99 data plan. We are both eligible for an upgrade now, but I was going to wait until Christmas to bite the bullet for her. DH and I are fine with just keeping feature phones for our use because we don't need to be connected all day long.
