Verizon wireless no-data plan phone recomendation?

So Despite the fact that I am pissed that Verizon is not offering a great selection of No-Data plan phones, I am probably switching to them anyway. I have always had some trouble with T-mobile & dead zones in my town, but it seems like the problem is getting worse, not better. I tried to call my hubby today from the pharmacy, couldn't even get a signal out in the parking lot.

Then he tried calling me 3-4 times today & I can only hear every other word he says.....I can't stand it anymore.

I originally planned to make the switch & get the EnV3, but that of course requires the data plan now, which I don't want. What I DO want is a good, phone that will hold up well, has decent battery life, and a good antenna so I won't be dropping calls because of a cheap crappy phone.

I was looking at the Samsung Intensity. The dealer at Costco said it was good. I am concerned about it for my husband, since it doesn't fold, I am afraid he will be butt dialing all day long.

My husband is much rougher on phones than I am, he does maintenance on a bridge, my phone sits in my purse. Any recomendations for him? & for me?

I have been reading reviews on Verizonwireless.com, but it seems like for everyone who loves their phone there is someone who can't wait to get rid of it & upgrade....

Do you have to purchase your phone through Verizon? I've been with Verizon for years and always buy my phone through a reputable seller on Ebay (you can activate your phone on Verizon's website once you receive it). I'm on a family plan so even with the renew thing every two years (I get $35 or $50 towards a new phone I can't remember which) none of the phones end up being free and I think it's wasteful to get rid of a perfectly good working phone anyways. I've had the LG NV (can't remember if it's 1 or 2) for 3 years and never have had an problems. I have the original battery in it and it now lasts about 2-3 days without having to be recharged. I plan on getting a new battery (when it needs it) and keeping this phone until it dies. I have no desire for touch screen anything or data plans. My entire family (including myself) have had nothing but problems with ALL of our Motorola phones.

My GF just upgraded/replaced her dead phone with the samsung She loves it and is still learning all it can do. I personally liked looks of it and may get it myself. I know in my looking I have not seen many phones that fold.

So if you buy it on your own through E-bay do you have to purchase the data plans on the phones that Verizon requires data plans on. For instance if I purchase an LG NV3 (which now requires a $9.99 data plan if purchased through Verizon) would I have to have the data plan when I activate the phone with Verizon? I want a nice phone for texting but don't want to pay for the data plan. DD15 needs a new phone too and only wants the ones that require a data plan. So we've waited to see what alternatives would pop up. I was informed at the Verizon store that we could deactivate the data plan but still have to pay for it (WHAT???). That goes against my penny-pinching nature!

I don't know if I am comfortable buying a phone, or any electronics for that matter, from ebay. If I do buy from ebay, how would I know for certain that I am buying a phone that won't require a data plan??

What would I do? Buy the phone, then call verizon to have my number ported from t-mobile? Would I have to pay an activation fee? Could it be done at a Verizon store? Is there anyplace beside ebay to buy an older style phone?? Would I have a contract for the plan? I am confused.....

When I asked the Verizon guy that very question he said that yes, if you try to activate a phone that Verizon deems needs a data plan you will be required to get the data plan. It doesn't matter where you get the phone, but to activate one on Verizon they will make you get a data plan. It sucks.

We got DD the Samsung Intensity for Christmas. She loves it since she mostly texts. It's been very reliable, no problems. I'm thinking about getting one for myself when my upgrade is available. I don't want to pay for the data package either.

My husband and I just got our Verizon "New Every 2" cell phones about a month ago. I chose the Motorola Rival in purple despite the fact it was getting negative reviews online. (My old cell phone is still in great condition if something happens with the Rival.) Anyway, so far I've been very pleased with the Rival and have had no problems with it. When we upgraded, it said that data package was optional, and I was able to get it for free with the "New Every Two".

My husband is a mechanic and can tend to be rough on phones. He choose the Motorola Barrage, which is a flip phone (his preference). It did end up costing some $ out of pocket ($30, I think) but it is a heavy duty phone meeting military specs for rain, temperature, dust, droppage, etc., so we thought it was worth the extra expense.

It was difficult to choose since so many require the data plan, but these are the phones we finally decided on, and we've been happy with them so far. Good luck choosing!

I just upgraded my phone last week and got the Intensity. So far I like it. While it doesn't fold, you can lock the screen and still take calls with it locked. It's pretty easy to do. SO far I haven't had any issues with it. And no data plan required for that phone.

I've had an Intensity since October and really like it. I've had no problems with it. I got it at Costco and it came with a car charger. It's a little slippery, so I bought a case that snaps on and has a rubber feel from Amazon. I think it was about $6. I also ordered screen protectors for .01 for 3. Just had to pay $3 for shipping. I am very happy with this phone. AND NO DATA PLAN!!!
