verandah door locks & bed rails

Hi everyone!
I am sailing on the Jan. 3rd Magic cruise and have two questions about my trip. I am sailing with my two kids (ages 1 & 3) and we are booked for room 6550(with a verandah). This may seem like a silly question, but what kind of locks are on the verandah doors? Are the high up so kids can't reach them? I am starting to have a reoccuring nightmare that my son opens the door and climbs up on the railing ! If anyone could let me know what to prepare for, it would be a great help . Last cruise we stayed in an inside cabin and it was tough to sit in the room while they napped, so we thought it would be nice to have a verandah. Now I am starting to second guess our decision.

Also, do they have any bedrails for the bed for smaller kids?

We have been on four cruises with a vernanda and I still can't open the door. I always need my husband to unlock etc. There is a twisty type of lock up high and then the door handle turns to lock and unlock.

I can only speak to the verandah door locks on Wonder, but I assume they are the same. It actually takes two different steps to lock and unlock the verandah. You have to turn a knob (up high and out of reach), then turn the actual door handle and pull the door open. Also, the door is heavy and would be hard for your younger kids to open even if it was unlocked. I guess two kids working together could get it open if it was locked, because one might be able to reach the knob from the bunk while the other one turned the handle. Again, I don't think this is a risk with kids ages 1 & 3.

There is a bed rail on the pull-down bunk (which probably is about 5 feet off the floor), but I'm not sure if there is one available for the lower bed. My kids are 6 & 9 so that's an issue we don't worry so much about anymore, although I can see why you would. The lower bed is just 18-24 inches or so off of the floor, however.

I have the same nightmares of my kids falling overboard. Then again, I keep telling myself that I have never heard of that happening. I can't answer your question about the verandah doors (although I remember hearing that there are locks), but I know that there are bedrails available. They are the mesh kind and I requested them on my reservation. I also hear that they have porta-cribs, which may be ideal for your 1 y/o if there is space in the room.

Thank you for such quick replies!! My mind is at ease already. My 3 year old has Down syndrome and is quite the escape artist(maybe he has a little extra Houdini genes)!!! He is so quick and just waits for the oppurtune time and tries to escape. It is good to know that the doors are "adult" proof as well as "kid" proof.

They had better have some sort of bedrails onboard for the other beds available...I have already requested mine for medical reasons...we HAVE to have bedrails in our room. If I remember correctly, From what I have seen, the bedrails on that pulldown berth has big fat wide slots and a little person can fall thru it....?
Maybe you ought to call DCL and make a request...

When we went last year on the Wonder 4 day the verandah door was really hard to open even for hubby or me. My oldest was 9 at the time and she couldnt get it open for the life of her. We had a 3 year old at the time and a 7 year old as well and none of them were able to get the door open UNLESS we had already unlocked it and were there helping a little bit. It seems there was quite a bit of "suction" also with wind so it made it a little harder as well.

As for the bed rails yes they do have them we requested one the first night for our 3 year old but never needed it and sent it back on the 3rd night. Our 3 kids rotated beds..1 got the Murphy Bed by the balcony door, one got the bottom "bunk" and one got the top bunk and they rotated. Our 3 year old never fell out of bed on any of the 3 beds although on the top bunk we did push his head down closer to the middle of the bed just to be sure.

one other point not only are the locks up high, I had a hard time opening the door just because it was so darn heavy! I know my 5 year old nephew couldnt do it. We were in 6654.

I'm rolling here! I actually have video of my tour of our cabin, I say "Oh there's hubby on the verandah, enjoying himself without me!" and then I proceed to TRY and get the door open, to which he is smiling at me waving!

the verandah doors give the impression of being "heavy" too ... and not easy to open by a long shot

In addition to the door being difficult to open, your child should still have a difficult time going over-board even if you left the door open. The railing has a sheet of plexi-glass on the inside such that children can not climb the railing. The only way one of your children could ever go overboard from a verandah would require that they move a chair or the small table on the verandah to the railing, and use it to climb up on the railing.

There have been many posts about "the dream" and I woke up sweating more than once. I had 9 (at the time) twin DS who are monkeys and love to get into trouble. I was shocked at how at ease I was once I saw the structure of the veranda and its door. We were fine so I encourage you to trust that you will feel better when you see the room.

I will warn you that our 2.5yrold was able to open the cabin door and walk down the hall on his own. We were right behind! Kindof surprised that when you lock the door the french style door handle pulls down and unlocks the door. Not sure of a solution.
