Venturing back into the gym today. (Long.. sorry!)

I sure am nervous about it.

Here's a little backstory:

I started working out at 24 Hour Fitness in July 2010. I started with a trainer, who I didn't meet before starting.. but we hit it off really well. I trained with her 3-5 times per week and worked out on my own 2+ times per week, so I'd usually be in the gym almost all 7 days per week. I was really into it. I lost a lot of weight.

My trainer and I really did hit it off very well. We started hanging out outside of the gym and became very close. I was continuing to be successful.. but then I came down with a very bad case of kidney stones, which had me in the ER for 15 hours and in bed the rest of the week, drinking water. My trainer seemed very offended that I didn't go into the gym at all that week.

The next week was my vacation. DH and I never took a honeymoon after getting married, and my parents generously gifted us a week long trip to WDW for our honeymoon in November. So, I was gone that week as well, but I was very active on the trip and gained about 1-2 pounds during the 2-week period that I didn't exercise and was on vacation. It came right off.

She was really upset with me that I didn't work out for those two weeks. I could just tell that her attitude was different. No more hanging out outside of the gym (which was fine with me-- I didn't really take offense to it), but she started being very pushy with me. During the holidays, I had family from out of town who I rarely see visiting, and I wanted to spend time with them, rather than spend hours at the gym. While I went in to work out an hour a day 3-4 days during those weeks, I didn't do my usual 3+ hours at the gym on those days.

A few weeks later, she was in a very bad mood during our training session, and while I was doing walking lunges, she just started freaking out about my technique and ended up getting very upset. She told me that I was an awful client (out of nowhere), and I ended up walking out on the session.

Her behavior was unwarranted, and I felt like I was in middle school again getting bullied by a "mean girl". So I stopped going to the gym. I didn't want to see her.

Yes, overreaction x 100. I should've gone in and just not talked to her. But I didn't go in. And I've gained about 20 pounds back.

Today I'm going back to the gym, a different location.. but still 24 Hour Fitness, and I'm going to start with a new personal trainer.

Wish me luck! Sorry for how long this was.. I just needed to get all that out. I'm finally letting the situation go, and realizing that there's no reason for me not to go to the gym!

Not all trainers are competent. Some have their own body issues/workout obsession traits that they try to project on their clients. This helps them justify their obsessions as "normal".

Also, am I correct in assuming you were paying for your sessions? Now combine the above with a hard sell salesperson who is trying to guilt you. Not to improve yourself, but to benefit her own wallet. The more you go, the more she gets paid.

If, for some reason, this peach shows up at your new location, smile and say you've found someone else you are happy with and tell her to have a great day. If she continues to badger you, tell management.

Thanks :goodvibes I am paying for my sessions.. will definitely keep everything you said in mind!

Wow! 3+ hours at almost 7 days a week !?
That seems excessive to me, I see why she
wanted you there all of the time.
I think you're doing the right thing for you, and
hope you find a trainer who is more interested in
your well being than she is in her pocketbook.
You deserve it!
