My only issue is when I start a thread, and then a while later, a more "popular" poster starts a thread about the same thing, and suddenly my thread becomes a ghost town. It's like high school all over again. Has happened to me three times this year so far.

That's very true, the internet is like a brutal version of middle & high school nonsense more often than not.

OP, there's bigger issues in life. Maybe that means you need to step away from the keyboard & take a deep breath. I know when I jumped into the theme parks board here I wound up asking questions that must have driven some of the veterans crazy. Thank goodness there were some knowledgeable posters willing to patiently answer my question that they probably have answered dozens of times. Just take a deep breath -- or maybe grab a bite of chocolate!

The search does work now but for many, MANY years did not. I think a lot of us just assumed it was still not operational.

There are other boards on the DIS where I really pity the poor soul who asked a question that comes up frequently. A lot of posters feel required to open the thread and chastise the OP instead of just skipping it since it annoys them. I just don't get that. Either answer the question kindly or ignore the question. :confused3

I agree. I feel so sorry for an OP if they, God forbid, ask a question that has been asked before. It always amazes me how people think it's OK to chastise someone instead of simply moving on to another thread. Maybe it's the anonymity of message boards that gives people a bit of courage to be snippy like that :confused3

See - I crack up every time I open a thread that sounds familiar, and then find that I have already responded to it - 4 years ago! Seriously - digging up a thread from 2006?! Opinions and trends change. Start a new thread if it's been a few years!

I like to see new opinions and fresh perspectives on repeat topics. I am bothered by the oppostite issue--it bugs me when people DO search and then bump a thread from years ago without bothering to post that they are ressurecting a long dead thread. I tend to be lazy and not read post dates and then I do not realize the situation until a while has passed (if ever). I wish those who bring back old threads would start off by posting that they are doing so, it saves me the hassle of reading those pesky dates myself:lmao:

:thumbsup2

Wait, you're complaining because people want to chit chat on a discussion board? :lmao:

:rotfl::rotfl:

ITA. I skip threads I am not interested in. it is not a difficult task.

oh bumping a 3 year old thread is ridiculous but when there are on page 2-3, you think people could look. It isn't that hard.

and is it me? But it takes a ton of restraint for me not to answer the "Has anyone ever shopped at Aldi" type threads with "no, no one has ever shopped there."

I'm horrible.

Wait? There are more popular people than YOU, Jennasis???? :scared1:

If you're horrible, you're not alone. I always want to do that too! :rotfl:

I know the search doesn't always work, but when it's a "news of the day" kind of thing, it really doesn't take a lot of time to see if someone else started a thread. Yeah, I can ignore the second (or third or fourth) thread (and I do), but I understand where the OP is coming from.

You mean like the way YOU posted another Oscar thread six HOURS after I posted an Official Oscar thread? :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao:

I posted one at 6 am before I left for work. Since I was at work all day, I didn't get to bump it forward. But it was only on the top of page 3 when I got home at 6pm. You can't tell me, as a poster of 10 years, 9,106 posts, that you don't know enough to look on page 3 for an existing thread, especially when someone calls it the Official one. :surfweb:

An "Official" thread only works when a community follows some loosely agreed upon rules of play. And the DIS community, (such as it is  :hippie: pirate: princess: :wizard: :joker: :clown: ) usually follows those rules when someone calls Dibs, naming an "Official" thread. Some posters later complained that they were stuck on the second, non-moving thread and didn't know there was a great party going on, on the "Official" thread. :rockband:

For the record, I am not more popular than you. I'm not a cliquer. (I usually only post to other people's TV show threads. My posts usually get ignored as someone else posts the same thing right after and everyone responds to them. ) And you've been here 4 years longer than me. As Robin said, there is no one more popular than you. ;) :goodvibes

On a lot of the technology boards I visit you can't open a new thread if there already is one on the topic. The mods will close the new thread and point your post at the old thread. This is the best way to keep all information about a topic in one place. If a problem already has a solution there is no need to rehash it.

This of course isn't the same for an opinion thread.

Well, sure - but how many new opinions and fresh perspectives can there BE regarding "Has anyone ever shopped at Aldi's?"? :rotfl:

I used to participate on a pay for use TV board and they were INSANE about duplicate threads. There were daily "chat" type threads but you were seriously flamed if you started a new thread that was even remotely close to another one started in the last week or so.

It's like that over on Fatwallet.com. It's a great place to find deals & coupon codes. But, a newbie accidentally starting a new thread about a subject already posted, and other posters come in, regulate and point out it's a duplicate thread (before the Mods get a chance to close the thread,) and they can sometimes get really flaming. :duck:

I think the same thing when I see those!:rotfl2:

But that would be a very different type of board than the DIS.

Well, actually:rotfl: I only went in ALDI twice in the USA and absolutely hated it both times. I twas filfthy and the stock was very low quality. It was also in a bad part of town (maybe there are better ones in other place). Here in Germany I love ALDI. They are always in good parts of town. They are clean and they have the best quality chicken and turkey of any normal gorcery store in the area (the butcher is better). SO, my opinion of ALDI has changed, significantly. I admit the phrasing is a bit annoying and if taken literally the only answer is "yes, people have shopped there" but we all know that is not what the poster intends to ask.

I don't understand all the nit picking. Isn't the word "here" implied??

Of course when someone asks "Has anyone......?" they know SOMEONE has, they are asking if anyone HERE has done it, and asking for their experience.

I can't stand when people get into such semantics on a fluff board.

Which is why I never actually answer that "no, no one has ever shopped there" even though I'm SOOOOO tempted! :littleangel:
