I'm offering FULL SIZE Hershey bars. Wanna be my friend?

hersheybar.jpg

That's funny. And here i was thinking of my avatar when i mentioned the chocolate. :rotfl2: But can i be your friend anyway?

I think we actually need more of those threads. Without them, this board becomes nothing but threads about mundane irritations. Do you really want to see twenty threads in a row lamenting that someone got cut off in traffic the day before yesterday and haven't figured out how to let the angst go?
I got cut off in traffic the day before yesterday and can't figure out how to let the angst go.

Search has been working really well for months now. It does need to be re-indexed once in a while, if you don't see the link that's what is going on.

As for forums where the moderators delete duplicate? Holy heck I'm happy if we keep the porn off the boards

You mean like the way YOU posted another Oscar thread six HOURS after I posted an Official Oscar thread? :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao:

I posted one at 6 am before I left for work. Since I was at work all day, I didn't get to bump it forward. But it was only on the top of page 3 when I got home at 6pm. You can't tell me, as a poster of 10 years, 9,106 posts, that you don't know enough to look on page 3 for an existing thread, especially when someone calls it the Official one. :surfweb:

An "Official" thread only works when a community follows some loosely agreed upon rules of play. And the DIS community, (such as it is  :hippie: pirate: princess: :wizard: :joker: :clown: ) usually follows those rules when someone calls Dibs, naming an "Official" thread. Some posters later complained that they were stuck on the second, non-moving thread and didn't know there was a great party going on, on the "Official" thread. :rockband:

For the record, I am not more popular than you. I'm not a cliquer. (I usually only post to other people's TV show threads. My posts usually get ignored as someone else posts the same thing right after and everyone responds to them. ) And you've been here 4 years longer than me. As Robin said, there is no one more popular than you. ;) :goodvibes

i call dibs on making this thread the official vent use the search engine thread. hey it does work. cool.

I know you say "no tags. . ." but boy that would be sooo perfect:lmao::lmao:

It is a very valid point though (in addition to some of us don't mind duplicates and the boards would crawl at a snail's pace and be booooring if nothing was ever allowed to be revisited): the mods have plenty to keep their handsfull without worrying about this stuff. This is a BIG forum so it would takes a ton of time to watch--and then there would be all kinds of judgement calls abotu what is really a duplicate vs. what is just a similar topic and lots of hurt feelings (becuase there always are here). Oy vey:headache:

There are other boards on the DIS where I really pity the poor soul who asked a question that comes up frequently. A lot of posters feel required to open the thread and chastise the OP instead of just skipping it since it annoys them. I just don't get that. Either answer the question kindly or ignore the question. :confused3

The Theme Parks board comes to mind. Don't dare ask if you should take a bus or car to the parks.:headache:

On a lot of the technology boards I visit you can't open a new thread if there already is one on the topic. The mods will close the new thread and point your post at the old thread. This is the best way to keep all information about a topic in one place. If a problem already has a solution there is no need to rehash it.

This of course isn't the same for an opinion thread.

That happens on the dining plan board here. Don't dare start a thread about tipping.:scared1: If you do, the thread will be closed, and you will be directed to the one HUGE tipping thread that is there. Who wants to wade through that?

I don't understand all the nit picking. Isn't the word "here" implied??

Of course when someone asks "Has anyone......?" they know SOMEONE has, they are asking if anyone HERE has done it, and asking for their experience.

I can't stand when people get into such semantics on a fluff board.

Yes here is implied, but the questions are silly when posted here. This is a Disney board full of thousands of disney fan. I'm pretty sure SOMEONE here has been to the Magic Kingdom on Christmas, Easter and/or Thanksgiving.
Someone here has stayed at the Wilderness Lodge.

When I see those threads I want to post -"Nope none of us have ever _______. You will be the first one to do so. Please be sure to tell us all about it when you return!":thumbsup2

Short and to the point.:thumbsup2

I always miss the good stuff.:sad2:

Respectfully (a) the specific reason for that thread is to AVOID heated 'discussions' about tipping (and so, to alleviate stress on the Moderators :teeth: ) and (b) the active thread is five pages long and STARTS with a very complete explanation of tipping and board policy.

I know why it's done, but that doesn't make it any less annoying.

While the original, long thread is closed - I'm sure if you offered to index it, the moderators would take your offer into consideration and as long as the thread isn't AT its maximum, possibly add that index to the thread.

OK, the "here" is implied. But don't you get it that people just want someone to talk to?

When they say "has anyone ever............." they really are saying "tell me about your experience doing..............". I think it's mean to call them out because they don't phrase it the way "you" think they should. Sure the information might already be here "somewhere". Sure you can google it. But I think many times people just want a conversation. If it bothers you why not just skip over that thread?

I don't want to index anything.

I want posters to be able to ask what they want, no matter how many times it has been posted.

I want those who are bother by repeated questions to just skip those threads.

I do skip those threads. However, there's a part of me that would love to post a snarky reply. pirate:

lol, no kidding!

I can't see why people have a problem with duplicates. I mean, really, who cares?:confused3I skip lots of stuff here.

Frequently, I do (although I was recently called out for simply replying "no" to a question; granted, the question wasn't, "Has anybody ever..."

But even if you skip over the thread, it's still THERE. You still SEE it, every time you're in that forum (okay, granted - until it's usurped by more current threads). You can ignore a poster, but to the best of my knowledge, you can't filter out threads based on word content in the thread title.

But the topic of tipping isn't restricted to a single thread because the subject comes up so frequently. It's restricted SOLELY because the subject gets so heated and personal, and because there are certain restrictions on discussing the specific topic, the Moderators need to be able to maintain control of any discussion. Having all discussions in a single thread is, apparently, the most effective way to manage this.

If you've got a better solution, you can submit it to that board's Moderators and the WebMasters and I'm sure they'll take any suggestions under consideration.

What repeat topic is so offensive that you can't bear to see it in print?

Repeat topic? Offensive? What have I written that gave you that impression? No, I'm referring to the same TYPES of threads as other posters in this thread: "Has anyone ever..."; combined with other posters 'advising' "well, just don't open those threads". Even if you don't open them, they still exist.

Yes, it's VERY easy to NOT open a thread. Step one: don't open the thread. Step two: no step two necessary.

But if only posters would TRY the search feature (and when it's not working, there's a message at the top of the screen stating that and indicating when it's expected to be back up), repititious posts like that, and "Does anybody shop at..." and "Tell me about..." could be avoided.

Wow, did this go screwy quick! :lmao:

I posted it more as a joke than a true vent! :rolleyes1

Ehhh...i guess that I have seen it bring up posts that are old/no longer valid. Then people get jumped on for reviving old threads.

Here...have some candy.

hersheybar.jpg

Oooo! Chocolate!

Go ahead and link me to any threads you start. :)

RE: SEARCH IT! Has anyone else noticed the same things get repeated over and over and over. Even fluff threads like "What's your favorite color?". So if everyone just searched it, the talking here would be done.

Just like complaints with clique threads - skip them. I don't go into "RSVP VENT" for kids b-days, because I don't have kid's b-day parties anymore. I skip them. :)
