Vent re: Dumbo and adult only riders

I think Walt wanted it to be a place for children of all ages, where adults could let out their inner child for a while and forget about their real lives and all the responsibilities and troubles that go along with it. Everyone pays for a ticket, everyone should be able to ride what they want (observing height limits, not wanting to start a different hot topic here!) and not feel badly.

I am a Mom of 3 kids and when we were just there in March there were adults on Dumbo while I was on with my kids. Wasn't a big deal at all, looked like they were having fun! And I am going solo, yes leaving my kids home with DH, and fully intend to ride my favorite FantasyLand rides!

Dumbo as well as character meals are for EVERYONE regardless of age! Walt would roll over if he knew that someone felt something in his parks was for one specific group/age. DH and I are in our 30's and ride Dumbo every trip as well as at least one character meal at every trip. DH looks forward to Dumbo!
Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, but I'm not going to not do something because "it's for kids" WDW is for everyone! It's the one place where DH and I can do to escape the "real world", the pressures of our careers and life in general. If we run around like 8 year olds so be it. That's one of the big reasons we return to WDW year after year. If you choose not to ride because you feel it's only for children, that's your choice, but please don't condemn the rest of us "children in adult bodies" who want to take in all that is offered.

I had never ridden Dumbo until January in DL. I am glad that I did it. I probably wouldn't do it again but I see no reason why an adult shouldn't be able to ride.

I like the fact that I can ride anything I want at Disney. Nobody is too old.

wow, what an un-disney comment... didnt disney say if you just plan for the kids, you're dead?

we're all kids at disney. guess what? we all paid to get in, we all waited in line, and we all want to be there. does that mean kids shouldnt be allowed to ride EE, ToT, RnR? cause those are for "adults?"

i am 23, and disney is my haven from my illness, so i am going to ride what i want and have a great time!

OP how sad that you feel this way. The first time I took my dh he wanted to ride everything that he had ever seen from Disney from his childhood. So we rode Dumbo and the teacups and the carousel and, well you get the picture. I would hate to think that there was someone disapproving of the two of us fulfilling a childhood dream, just because we were "big kids"

If someone is getting the three minutes of pleasure from riding Dumbo, then what's the harm?

plus the whole reason walt made disney was so the parents could ride with there kids and to have fun not just sit and wait on a bench.... All the rides are meant for EVERYONE to have fun! even barnstormer can be a ride for adults!!

Are you kidding? Give up Dumbo? NEVER!!!

That has been our "family tradition" starting ride and will always be. I'm a big kid, going on with my 10 year old son who loves it also! Everyone is a kid once you enter Disney!

Okay, I know I am going to get a lot of flak about this, but I am posting anyway.

Dumbo is a ride that small children LOVE. AND it has one of the longest lines of all rides in the MK (usually). Small children (toddlers, preschoolers) have very few rides just for them that we KNOW will not scare them like dark rides, etc. I really hate seeing adults taking up a Dumbo seat without a kid. I mean, come on. Give this one to the little kids, okay? They have a hard time waiting in line as it is.

Thank you :)

I agree with you completely. It's one thing to ride with your kid, but it's something a grownup going on that ride without kids even in their party? Yup, I think it's a little odd. But to each their own...

it isn't right that I am not allowed to ride because I don't have a child with me Disney is for everyone and IF you can ride the ride you should be able to!! they waited in line too!?

It's not that grownups should NOT be "allowed" to ride...it's just like...come on, the lines are long, give the little kids a chance.

Wow....I hate to think anyone would want to limit people from getting on a ride (except for safety issues like height limits, pregnancy, etc).

I don't think the OP is saying the ride should have limits on it...she isn't saying adults should be banned from the ride. I think the OPs point is that it would be nice to leave some things to the little kids...adults take up space on a ride that has really long lines as it is.

I'm with you, mefordis!

Hmmm... so if were to take my 93 year old Grandmother to WDW, I should only take her on rides like Space Mountain and RnRC??

And how many times have you seen a family of 3 where mom rides with the kid and dad rides in the car behind and the kid waves at dad. I think that's cute. But according to the OP, Dad shouldn't ride.

I personally have no real interest in riding Dumbo, myself, but if I want to ride it, I will. I also have no interest in character meals, but if there was one with amazingly good food, I'd go.

If you are concerned about the line, go during non peak hours, first thing in the AM, or go during parades or popular dining times.

What about the Aladdin ride, which is exactly the same, or the Astro Orbitor? Should only kids be allowed on those too??

Everyone should be able to go on everything depending on their tastes. I personally don't like rides like Dumbo, but love TOT, but i don't begrudge those 7 year olds who are also queuing for it, they have just as much right (as long as they scream loud enough! ;) )

I find it very sad that you think that just because someone doesn't have a child they shouldn't enjoy all that WDW has to offer. I have an 18 month old and stood in the Dumbo line (twice) last week for 20 minutes so he could ride. Yet, I never even thought about the adults that were there by themselves. To me, WDW is a place where anyone of any age can do what they want and anyone is welcome.

With OP comments regarding todlers and preschoolers, at least in my families case, our son 4 at the time of original visit with him) would not have gone on "Dumbo" without my wife or I, so (again, in our case) it would mean an adult having to go on anyway.

Well, maybe this is a bit silly...but, my DH absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVES the characters. We do have a son who is 2 (we're taking him to Disney this year for the first time). I guarantee you that once we get there, my husband will probably be more excited to see the characters than our son. :rotfl: At first, I'll admit, I was a little embarassed because he wanted to stand in every single line to get his picture with the characters. I thought the same thing..."shouldn't we just get out of line and let the kids get their pictures taken?" His response? "I feel like a kid." Oh well...I see both sides. Part of me did feel a little guilty when there were kids waiting in line to get their pictures and autographs. We both have high stress sales jobs (very un-kid like and mostly un-fun to be honest). So, when I see my husband this happy and carefree, it makes me feel happy and relaxed too, and I figure, that's what vacation is for. This year, we've planned 2 character breakfasts, for my son of course. ;)

If this was written the other way around, would you be so agreeable? If someone came on and said look I think Dinosaur, ToT, Rock N Rollercoaster, etc is for adults and I don't appreciate having to stand in a long line because all these kids want to ride it. Please keep your children off these rides and leave something for the adults to enjoy. A thread like that would be 20 pages long of angry people. And believe me they would not be as polite as the responders on this thread have been.

Disney isn't just for kids. Walt didn't just make it for little kids. Don't be selfish and tell an adult they shouldn't ride Dumbo. If an adult doesn't want the kid to wait in line long, get up early and get there early. What if that was your favorite ride as a child and you had not been in awhile? I don't think you should have to skip the ride because somebody else has a problem with it. And where do you draw the line? I love Peter Pan. Should I not ride it?

Wow, THANK YOU!! I didn't think I'd get anyone brave enough to agree with me in writing! You hit it on the head -- no one should be BANNED. I just think people could do what I did -- look around at all the children waiting, see how sloooooowwww the line is moving, and use their common courtesy to give it up for the small ones, and hightail it to Splash or Space or something. Adults get everything there -- why not reserve the very few things that are very difficult to get for the young children (for example, riding Dumbo in less than 45 min wait, a meal at Chef Mickey's to meet Mickey himself). Winnie and Peter Pan, okay. But the wait in Dumbo is ridiculous and the character meals -- come ON. The food is not good so you wouldn't go for that.

So the OP believes in age discrimination. It is good thing that Walt didn't.

I am an adult Dumbo ride and proud of it.

Not only do I disagree with the OP, but apparently so did Walt Disney since this was one of his quotes:

"You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway.”

I didn't go to WDW until I was an adult. Didn't feel guilty the first time I rode it and don't feel guilty riding it now (with or without my dd).

Yes. I'm really going to get blasted for this one, but I think the character meals should be reserved for the little ones as well.

Sorry. I guess I just don't get it. Before I had a child I took my husband to WDW because he had never been and I was in Orlando on business, so he met me there. We went to the GF reservation desk and asked about dinner reservations and the cm was, like, "It's your lucky day! A table is available for CRT." We were like, "okay." We ended up walking up to CRT and looking at each other like, "Now, why do we want to eat here?" We skipped the reservation. This was in 2002 and credit cards weren't necessary. We went to O'Hana instead (they had the pineapple and caramel then, I remember. Not to get off topic).

I guess I only really am into Disney because of my child. Once she becomes a teen it will probably be Universal all the way.

Well we don't have kids and don't plan on having any and we love Disney. We go down every year. In fact, I plan on riding Dumbo one of these trips. Just something I want to do. I also enjoy the characters. I am sorry you only love Disney because of your child. I am a kid at heart when I go to Disney. Sorry you don't get those same feelings. :sad2:
