Vent - Lance Armstrong bracelets

I wear one in honor of my aunt and think the fact that all the proceeds (somewhere in the neighborhood of $11+ million) go to cancer research is great. A friend of mine knows the situation. However, he is totally against gimmicks like this, esp. if they are done through a corporation. So he sends me this link in an email with the subject line "It's all a Nike plot":

So Nike gets some goodwill. Part of me says, "So what? They (and Lance Armstrong Foundation) have managed to raise an enormous amount of money for cancer research. I don't care." Isn't there some saying that you gotta have a gimmick? Except I know if I say this, he's going to start an arguement with me about why it does matter and that Nike is bad and that the Wear Yellow campaign is stupid. Yes, I know Nike treats its foreign workers very poorly and this certainly doesn't excuse that. But I didn't buy this bracelet for Nike. I bought it from the Lance Armstrong Foundation so my money would go to cancer research. That's what matters to me. I wish I could make my friend understand that and that he wouldn't go picking this fight with me. `Cause right now, that's the last thing I need.

There is always someone out there who believes they are better than you and who is determined to make you see that.

Go with your conscience. If you feel good about what you have contributed, then that is all that matters. You have to answer to yourself, not your friend.

The link didn't work. But, I personally don't use any of the ribbons. I feel that I can support things without having to wear a ribbon. I feel that they're too "gimmicky" like your friend said. But, I don't care if other people wear them.
