VENT: I want to strangle my co-worker!

Lots of good advice & perspectives here. As someone in HR, I want to say BRAVO to most of you.

These thoughts are based on my company and my experience w/ this company. I'm not "broad brushing" or by any stretch appling this principals to the world..

Yes, Mgmt DOES notice the snarky employees...The only thing worse than the snarky employee's is the employee's who feel the needs to constantly point it out to us or other employee's like we (mgmt) are to dumb or blind to see it. In our company, we apply the same "opinion" to the snarky as we do to the "nosey" employee.

We don't need you to point out when someone is out every (or most) monday or friday. Yea. We see that.
We don't need you to point out when someone is spending xtra time chatting w/ someone else. Yea we see that too.
We don't need you to point out...... yep.. We still see it :)

The thing is, in a "GOOD" company, it is not your business what has been addressed with another employee. I've had several employee's get all bent out of shape about another employee... What none of them knew is that employee was on probation, about to be let go, and had had plenty of notices about the "problem" but as far as any of the employee's knew, it had never been addressed with the problem employee. Why? It's not thier business. If YOU had gotten in trouble for "something" at work, would you really want everyone else to know about? Our mantra @ our office is, "if someone gets fired, it should not be a surprise to the person being fired, but it should be a surprise to everyone else" It's no one else's business what action is being taken or not against another employee. period. no exceptions.

With that said, there is NOTHING wrong with having a conversation with your boss with regards to anything that affects YOUR job responsibilities. If something someone else does constantly creates a hardship for you, then yes, in a professional manner sit down with your boss/supervisor and say, I need some help finding a solution to a situation (dont say problem!!! that just sounds negative!). This is the situation.. when xyz is out, In order to do my job and the backup stuff on the same day I have to stay late, which means I have to pay extra for child care, or arrange.... or whatever.... Is it possible to run some of the reports the following morning or is there some other way that this "situation" can be solved? The point is to focus on your wanting to find a solution that works for everyone rather then coming across as this is too much for me. Come across as proactive because the non -whining, proactive employee is going to be the one who pops into our mind for promotation, advancement etc when the oppurunity is there.

Its right that you have no ideal why the employee is really out. The boss may be dealing with it, or it may be something that's been negotiated and approved. You don't really KNOW and any judgement based on what you don't know is just that a judgement.

With all that said, as a fellow "employee" I do agree.. some people are just annoying to work with. Practice counting to 5 (or 10 or 15..) and smiling and walking away. Don't put yourself into the problem. Again, the boss see's the problem and they also seeEVERYONE who plays into the problem.. even if it's just the person complaining about it to someone else... yep.. we see You (general, not you) as part of the problem as well.

Good luck! I know it can be frustrating but it's not really YOUR problem unless you make it your problem. Nothing wrong w/ venting about an annoying co-worker, just make sure it's in the appropiate place/time, and to the appropiate persons.
