When my neighbor moved in over 5 years ago, she started a cute little exchange each holiday amongst our kids. Small gifts for Christmas, Valentines, and Easter. No big deal.

They are leaving on vacation so she gives me my kids stuff this morning at the bus stop. I will give them thiers when they get off the bus. DS10 has not had a chance to see it yet. I peeked inside the gift bag and saw some gum on top, so then I looked some more and there was a mini football, silly string and more gum and jelly beans.

So you are probably asking what is the issue? Sound nice? It is the thought that counts? EXCEPT DS10 JUST GOT BRACES TWO WEEKS AGO!. They know this, he cant have anything in the bag. Dont most people know that kids with braces cant have gum or chewy stuff:confused3 . So I qucikly stuck in some M&Ms and other chocolate I had.

They gave the same to DS5 too. Neither of my kids really do gum. That I would not expect her to know but I thought the braces were a dead giveaway.:confused3

Oh well anyone want a chicken filled with gumballs:rotfl:

ETA: I am not planning on saying anything to my neighbor. Just wanted to vent!

Not necessarily. I doubt I would think of something like that. Just remember, it's the thought that counts. I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose.

I would venture to guess most people are not aware of any limitations with regards to braces.

Let it go. Maybe she never had braces or had kids with braces. I know lots of people who don't know the ins/outs of brace wearing.

I had braces and was quite successful at chewing gum and eating popcorn-but don't tell your child (or my mom) that

I think the Easter Bunny is putting pooping chickens in my kids' Easter Baskets. They will think it is a riot!

Really? I guess I thought that gun being a no-no everyone knew. I mean they had that back in the dark ages when I got braces. Now some of the stuff on the list had me blown away, like Doritos. But I thought eveyone knew about gum.:confused3

I could honestly see myself doing something stupid like this. I'm sure she didn't mean any harm -- I'd give her a pass on this one.

Oh I am not planning on saying a word and I have always taught my my kids to say thank you no matter what they get. I just was frustrated bc I know he cant have any of it and I know he will be bummed. He is already upset by his limitations.

My DD14 has been wearing braces for 2 years and is able to chew gum--it just must be sugarless.:confused3

I guess this wouldn't bother me as much as the whole obligatory exchange-gifts-for-every-holiday thing--now that would drive me nuts! ;)

I think you're exactly right about the braces. Nothing the neighbor did sounds deliberately unkind or unthoughtful.
The little holiday exchage is probably just a way to celebrate Easter, spring, and be neighborly.

You might just be a little more sensitive since it is all so new for him. Tell him he can trade it at school with his friends for something he CAN have! :)

I chewed gum and ate pretty much everything when I had braces. I would let it go. I didn't know you couldn't chew gum with braces until after I got them taken off.:lmao:

I was tortured with braces for 3 years and I wouldn't have even though twice about any limitations regarding braces if I were giving a gift. Unless you are dealing with braces right then and there - it's probably not something that would even cross your mind.

His list said no gum at all. And limit ice cream, that one I didnt get:confused3
I dont mind the gift exchange, the kids have fun with it. No biggie.

No gum allowed at school, it will probably get trashed bc I dont know who to unload it too, which I hate doing bc she spent money on it

What a nasty neighbor.
You know, I'd be really PO'ed if I did something nice for my neighbor only to find out they came to vent about it on a message board. It was an oversight. Maybe she even forgot your son got braces.

You are quite right. My son just had a palate expander put in about a month ago. It's pretty similar to braces, no gum, caramel, etc. My sister was totally unaware that he couldn't have these things when my niece had her birthday party. She ended up swapping out some of the candy that she put in his goodie bag. It wasn't a big deal. It was an honest mistake and we let it go. :thumbsup2
