I just need to vent because I'm so irritated this morning. Now that there are 3D TV's/DVD's, the digital copies of movies are rarely available with the non-
3D packages of DVD's. I'm specifically referring to Brave, but it has been the common theme over the last year or so.

I used to be able to buy the BluRay/DVD/Digital combo pack. Now we have to buy the 3D copy as well to get the digital copy. I only know one person who has a 3D TV. We love to have the digital one for our iPod/iPads and I don't want to pay the digital price on iTunes. Irritates me to no end! I know I could buy the 3D pack and end up saving $$ on the digital copy, but I don't need any more DVD's cluttering up my space and why should I when the price is still the same as it always was for the DVD/BluRay. In other words, you don't get the digital copy, but you don't save any $$ either.

Okay, my rant is over, but I don't feel any better :confused3 and probably won't until I get my way. "I want an Oompah Loompah and I want it NOW".

You know you can make your own digital copies of movies; I do it all the time. There are a number of software programs available to do this.

You can always try selling the 3D copy.

What I was going to say. I have a 3D TV and have bought a few 3D blu-rays from people that just want the standard blu-ray and/or digital copy and sell the 3D blu either on eBay or on a 3D Forum site that I frequent. That would help offset some of the cost of the higher cost.

Another option would be to buy a 3D TV and enjoy! :cool2:

Obviously, the marketing dept. for Disney has learned that having a DVD or BluRay AND a digital copy is a pretty popular combination for many families. But somewhere along the line, someone determined that they can make more money by NOT including the digital copy in their packaging for the DVD/BluRay combo. There are many people are willing to pay extra for that digital copy on iTunes as well.

Making your own digital copy is an option, but there are copyright issues with doing that. The DVD/BluRay has a digital rights protection that you have to circumvent in order to do it. There is software out there that will do it. However, I don't see what the problem is with purchasing the 3D package. With coupon and sale prices, the price for the 3D combo pack is the same as the BluRay/DVD set without digital copy on Amazon. If clutter is a problem, then just throw the 3D disk out or give it to someone you know who does have 3D TV.

FWIW I agree. I have zero interest in buying a 3D TV and I am in the market to buy a new TV soon. I bought the big combo pack of Cars 2 and tried to give the 3D copy to the only guy I know that has a 3D TV-he already had it. But the kids really want the digital copy for their Ipod.

We were actually just talking about this with DH last week. We do have a 3D TV , but we also have an iPad. I think I like to have the 3D better, but I wish they offer all in one combo. Maybe they should offer one just bluray and digital copy. We don't ever use a regular DVD anymore.

I just convert everything to a digital file. It takes a while, but its easier than spending more for the 3D copy since we will never get a 3D tv (we have no interest in one).

A bit OT, but how do you like your 3D tv? We are planning on replacing our tv and are thinking about getting a 3D tv.

Actually, I love it. I am a technology nerd so I'd been wanting a 3D set for a few years and finally got a 65" set in February. I have a passive set which uses the same cheapo glasses you get at the movies, not the expensive battery-operated ones. At first 3D movies were pretty bad as far as the story lines but in the past few years it has gotten much better. It's becoming much less of a novelty and a way to enhance the story and bring you into the movie. Hugo is a wonderful example of this. Some of my favorite 3D movies I own are the Disney ones (Beauty & the Beast, Lion King, Tangled) and can't wait for Finding Nemo, Little Mermaid, Up and Monsters Inc. If you haven't seen BatB in 3D, you're missing out. It was an AMAZING conversion! These days 3D sets are pretty much the same price as a normal non-3D set so why not? You don't have to watch EVERYTHING in 3D (I don't) but it is a nice option to have when you want to put in a great 3D movie and enjoy. :cool2:

We never had an interest in a 3D TV either, but when we went to replace our old TV, the 3D TV was on sale for the same price as the regular TV. As such, we went ahead and got the 3D TV. So you may end up with one anyway!

Same thing happened with the Blu-Ray player... the 3D one was one sale for the same price as the non-3D one.

I just convert our DVDs to digital copies. It is easy enough to do.

I hate the 3D craze and hope it will pass soon... I was so disappointed when Disney didn't re-release a standard version of Beauty & the Beast when they did the 3D theatrical run. I wanted to take my kids to see it but I get such headaches from any sort of extended 3D viewing that I couldn't. Looks like the re-release of Nemo will be the same. :( So I won't buy the 3D versions because I don't want to encourage the trend!

We have a 3D TV and we love it. We love going to the movies to see 3D movies too. Some people cannot watch 3D movies or the 3D effect does not work for them.

We watched some of the Olympic in 3D. That was awesome!!!

We did not plan on getting a 3D set. We wanted a 70 inch to replace our 64 inch TV. At 70 inches, the refresh rate of 120 Hz had a hard time keeping up with the size of the TV. We wanted the 240 Hz refresh. The 240 Hz TV was also a 3D TV. They bargained with us on the price and then we also got two 3D glasses and a 3D blu-ray player. In addition, DirecTV also has a few 3D channels that are only accessible if you have a 3D TV. The TV communicates with the DirecTV box and the channels turn on for viewing.

Our glasses are the active version and go for about $40 each. They have a rechargeable battery in them. They are charged by a UBS port.

Not trying to hijack the thread or start any riff but.........to say that 3D is a 'craze' or a 'trend' is IMO totally inaccurate. It's actually growing probably more than you think. No, it's not catching on as fast as most executives would've hoped but it IS growing. Look at the box office stats: 10 of the top 20 grossing movies so far this year were in 3D including #1 (The Avengers). The #1 movie of all time (Avatar) was in 3D and has two sequels in the works. Disney isn't releasing Finding Nemo in normal 2D because it has already done that. This is a special 3D release. Same thing they did with Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. I can understand 3D isn't for everyone but I don't understand the hate towards it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Simple. I don't like the show Glee but I don't go around bashing it and trying to discourage others from watching it. I just turn the channel. :happytv:

What do you use to convert to digital?

I used to be the same way, couldn't watch 3D without getting a horrible headache that usually became a migraine. The first movie that didn't give give me a headache was Avatar, I watched that whole movie with the glasses on and didn't have any problems at all. Since then I've watched multiple 3D movies and have had zero issues with headaches. DD16 and I went to BatB 3D and it was amazing, I want to go see Nemo 3D so badly! :) I don't think it's a craze or fad at all, I think more people will be buying 3D TV's and Blu-Ray players in the near future.

That said, I agree that I don't like the bundles that are out there, I don't need a Blu-Ray and regular DVD, just the Blu-Ray please. :)

A lot of people are turned off from 3D because the first TV sets that came out have active shutter glasses which means the lenses in the glasses electronically alternately darken to block out the picture at the same time as the TV is switching pictures so that each eye is seeing a different image. This flickering gave some people (myself included) eye strain and headaches. It's kinda the same thing as a fluorescent light flickering. They still make active shutter sets but they now also have passive sets which, as I said before, are the same type as they have at the movie theather. The screen has two images interlaced with each other and each glasses lens blocks out part of the image so you only see what each eye should see. It's much less (basically none) eye strain and much more comfortable.

That said, I agree that I don't like the bundles that are out there, I don't need a Blu-Ray and regular DVD, just the Blu-Ray please.
They are actually starting to move towards that. I bought The Hunger Games last week and it only included a blu-ray copy and Ultraviolet copy so I can store it in my could. No DVD version was included. :thumbsup2

Also, The Hobbit has been shot fully with newer 3D technology. It may be the first movie I will actually go to see in 3D after watching the production video blogs from Peter Jackson.

Lion King actually did run in both normal and 3D during the theatrical re-release, which is why I'd hoped for the same with BatB. It is disappointing as a parent not to be able to take my kids to see the Disney movies I love so much in the theatres because they're only being shown in 3D. :sad1:

Personally, I only hate it because it does seem like it is catching on and becoming more of a norm. Even corrected my vision isn't quite perfect and is slightly better in one eye than the other, and I think that's why it gives me headaches. S2o the more things that are released 3D only, the more disc releases where you have to buy the 3D version to get the best bundle, the more frustrating it becomes to me. I don't mind 3D co-existing with standard but I hate the inroads it is making in replacing standard.

Making your own digital copy is an option, but there are copyright issues with doing that. The DVD/BluRay has a digital rights protection that you have to circumvent in order to do it.

It is legal to make a back up digital copy of a movie you own.

I use a program called WinX DVD Ripper Platinum to make digital copies. It usually works well. Some people like a free program called Handbrake; I tried it, but didn't like it.

Thanks for the information from those owning 3D tvs. The most recent issue of Consumer Reports rating tvs recommended taking the plunge and going 3D if you are buying a tv.

Like I said, making your own digital copy is an option. I never said that it was illegal. I only said that there are copyright issues associated with it. DVDs and BluRays have DRM protections on them to prevent copying. There is software that will break through the DRM and make a digital copy of the hard copy. Copyright infringement comes into play when you share that digital copy with a friend, upload it to PTP sharing websites or attempt to sell the copy to someone.

ETA: WinX DVD Ripper runs about $35 (on sale). You can sometimes find a registration code online that will allow you to use the free trial version an unlimited number of times, but you will not be able to update the software without purchasing it and getting your own activation code.
