vent: do your relatives stop by unannounced?

It doesn't happen often with our relatives, but my DH's Dad just rings the bell and opens the door and walks in. Just once I'd like him to walk in on something he "shouldn't see", then maybe he'd learn to ring the bell and wait!! :D

A few years ago I lost my job a week before Christmas and was very depressed for awhile, and I remember my friend just dropping in unannounced at 9:00 in the morning. That in itself wasn't so bad, she's my friend so I don't really care if she sees the house a mess and me without a shower, but she brought one of her friends along that I had never met!! Yikes!! I was so embarrassed, but more upset with her that she hadn't called to warn me. She lives over an hour away, so it would have been nice to have some warning since she was bringing someone with her. I could have at least had time to shower, and pick up the worst of the mess!!

Nope they never do.. however we stop by my FIL's house a lot though.. DH still has a key.

Nope. One of the advantages of living on base - we have to go to the gate to get them in. If we don't want to see them, we can just leave them there.

I wanna live on a base, then.

Hmm, if I start building a fortress wall now, maybe it will be finished before the spring...

Yeah, my family does come by without calling.
It seems like it is different in really big families though. We were raised in a house that had visitors in it almost at all times. You kind of get used to an open door policy then. I still walk in my parents home without knocking (if I were to knock my mom would ask me why in the world I knocked instead of just coming in, lol)
I have been embarrassed over a messy house lots of times though, seems like it tends to work that way.

This has been an issue in our house since we got married. My inlaws will come by at anytime they please. They live about an hour away but this doesnt stop them from "dropping" in about once a week. There is no way to hide because as soon as my kids see that its them they yell for them. We have had to resort to deadbolt locking the doors from them walking in and my father-in-law has begged my husband for a key (which I will not allow). They are older folks with generous hearts, but they have hit on one of my biggest pet peeves!

This has got to be my biggest pet peeve. I just think it is common courtesy to call first. I have a BIL who always drops in with his new wife. Payback is coming though, they're expecting a new baby in the spring. They are in their late-thirties, this is their first child, and everything in their house is always just so. Boy, is their world in for a shock. I may just have to "drop by" with my gang in tow to see how they're holding up!;)
