Vent about limits on buying Sudafed

You're required to enforce it? Are you a cop, or something? (Not sarcastic, question only.)

Good grief. I am the person behind the counter that you yell at! :confused3 Having a prescription for sudafed does not make it costly.... it just allows you to get what you need for your condition. You might check into it if your family suffers from allergies as you say. :)

You would probably end up saving money!!

How was I to know you were the one selling the pills/such? I'm not psychic!

And who said anything about yelling? Only thing I've said is I disagree, I haven't said anything about putting up a fight.

A prescription costs more than over the counter/shelf bought medicine, so, yes, it does make it more costly. It's where most of the money for medication is made, through the surcharges for prescriptions, and the cost of stocking them, along with the cost of shipping, if needed.

This law is a hamper upon families with children. Families with children need allergy medicines, like this, and if PE doesn't do anything, what's the point? Me, I can't use Claratin (and I wish they'd get that crap off the shelves

It doesn't work for you, so take it off the shelves?

It works for me and I'm glad I can buy it. I don't have children, does that matter?

Hmmmm... not necessarily true! I don't know where you are getting your meds but if what you say above is true, I would try another pharmacy. Since I own one, I do know what I am talking about. :thumbsup2

You are kidding right? How does a 19 year old child that doesn't even have $10 to go to the movies have ANY clue about the cost of prescription medications vs OTC meds and the needs of families with children? What you have just said is so far from the truth.

CJ MickeyMouse, I have wondered if my Dr. could write me a script if my allergies required more Sudafed than we could purchase in a month. Things are highly regulated in my state.

After buying sudafed pe and having it make my sinuses more clogged, I googled it and found a lot of complaints about it not working.

I dont use sudafed that often, so I dont mind the hassle, I cant beleive how happy I was to have the real sudafed after the pe made my head explode.

It would definitely be worth checking into. You might just ask your pharmacist, as they will know what is within the laws of your state. Usually something can be done to get the patient what they need. :)

We have heard this same thing over and over - we really don't recommend the PE as we have had so many people complain about it. Our family has tried it as well, and it didn't work for us either.

OTC is not necessarily cheaper than prescription at ALL! The prescription for DHs allergy stuff is waay cheaper than buying OTC.

I don't mind the law, if it helps then so be it. We have never had a problem getting all the medication we need when it is needed.

Mainly b/c i always make sure we have some on hand and don't have to run out and buy for everyone when we all come down with something at the same time.

It's not that it doesn't work with me, but that I've seen nothing but bad effects come out of it. If we're going to go about pulling the 'bad', this is no different.

Prescriptions cost, based upon what one's insurance does not cover.

Carrying from thread to thread, again? Stalking a member? Anywho, I don't pay for medications, my mom does, and I just talked to her about it, and, guess what? What I said above holds true. It's so far from your truth, and how your prescriptions may be handled, but in my case, if the insurance doesn't cover it, it's costly.

Really, I'm seeing it as a great market for money. They can charge double what they did for the original Sudafed b/c they know they can, despite it not working.

Is about all of the drug makers changing their products to be able to be out in the open... instead of behind the counter. At least, give us both... but Tylenol (the Childrens cold line), for instance... has removed the drug from their product and it's no longer available, even behind the counter. I didn't find the new product worked as well as the old.

If I'm ok to ask for it, sign for it, etc... why can't I still have it? :confused3

While I know it is not fair to the law abiding citizens, as the wife of a F/T Firefighter/EMT and P/T Police Officer I am thankful for the new laws, as it has cut down tremendously in our area on the amount of meth labs (which are extremely explosive and dangerous to our first responders)

Meth labs were a huge problem here and the new laws have helped so much. I know it's an inconvenience, but so is having to take my shoes off when I go through airport security.

BLAME OKLAHOMA!

We were so tired of putting these stinking meth producers in jail, and picking up the pieces of the houses they blew up while producing it, we were one of the first states to enact this law, guess what all the meth producers left, and we don't have mobile homes blowing up every week.

Sorry, but it WAS needed, just plan on you purchases...

And here I thought it was Tacoma WA's fault. :)

I think that anyone who does NOT live in an area plagued by meth problems is very lucky. I think that anyone who doesn't worry that a used car they buy at a local lot, or a house they rent or buy, was used as a meth lab previously is very lucky.

I don't know the statistics, and I'm more Libertarian than anything else, but I think that limiting the amount of drug one can purchase to a NORMAL amount, when that drug can be used to make a very dangerous drug at home, is a good thing.

Then again, I don't bemoan the loss of Sudafed for two reasons:

1. "non-drowsy" my behind...when I was still in my allergy drug phase, Sudafed knocked me out like NOTHING else.

2. found chiropractic and acupuncture, and don't have allergies anymore*.
(for anyone who has never tried to help their immune system respond normally, I highly recommend giving those things a solid try...they are both an absolute miracle for me!)

*(well, I can get overwhelmed by a HUGE field treated with pesticides, but I don't even have that reaction when I am vegan...but being vegan, for me, is more of a pain than avoiding huge treated fields, so I live with the allergic shiners and very very mild and occasional sneeze-fests)

I have a friend that uses the new stuff and claims that it is no different, so I guess it works for some, but I still love my plain old 12 hour Sudafed!

It is VERY true that prescriptions cost based on what insurance does not cover, and in several cases we have have had script drugs go OTC and in every case the price then went UP because we then had to pay the entire cost out of pocket instead of having the help of insurance.

And since I posted on this thread first I don't think that is "stalking". Since you seem to make sure that you show up on many of these threads as a self professed expert on the subject and make rather wild statements you are quite memorable.

You need to understand at the tender young age of 19 that just because it happened to YOU does not make it the absolute truth. Just like this point you tried to make:

I've never seen or heard of anyone getting a prescription to Sudafed in our state, at least, nor would I see the point.

Since I doubt you have spent every waking hour of your life in every drugstore in your state monitoring if there were prescriptions being brought in for Sudafed this is rather ridiculous statement. Here on the DIS those that get respect in discussions such as these are the ones that are willing to offer thoughtful insight and are willing to realize that their opinions are just that, their opinions, and offer them as such. And while you may not be willing to change your opinion, you should at least be willing to listen to the other side with the same respect that you wish them to afford to you. The more outlandish you act here, the more outlandish the reaction to you will be.

I completely agree. I LOVED the combination liquid Benadryl Sudafed for kids they sold and my kids took it well but I can no longer find it. I assume they no longer sell it because of the hassle.

Thanks, I have looked it over. I had no idea that was out there.

And I always give a :thumbsup2 to anyone that gets the "s" in my name correct!

I just bought Sudafed yesterday and I got it right off the shelf. It is the "new" Sudafed without the pseudoephedrine in it.

The decongestant they replaced Sudafed with is essentially worthless. It doesn't do a darn thing for most people. What upsets me even more than the OTC issue is that many prescription products also did away with pseudoephedrine and replaced it with phenylephrine, so those prescription meds are now ineffective.
