I am a vegetarian, no meat of any kind. Looking at my diet, I can see that I really lacking on protein sources. So I am looking to all of you for some great suggestions. I am looking for those things that you wouldn't normally think of as being good sources of protein.

PS. I also do not like Tofu or Soy products.

Don't know if you are a lacto or lacto ova vegetarian ? Best sources of protein for a vegetarian are milk, eggs, yoghurt, cheese, nuts, pulses ( peas, beans lentils etc). Animal protein (e.g meat ) is a higher biological value thean veggie sources so to make sure that you improve this you should mix proteins from cereal sources e.g, bread, rice pasta etc with your veggie ones. The combination produces a much higher bilological value one than pulses nuts etc on their own! Hope this isn't too confusing and that it helps some!

christa, I'm a vegetarian too although I do tend to eat some seafood. I'm also interested in this because I only know the popular sources such as eggs and nuts. I don't care for peanut butter or eggs so that's not helping much either. I have started taking a multivitamin but I know that isn't going to cut it either.

Thanks for the suggestions Christi!

What about beans?

Bean chowder or soup
Bean burrito
Bean dip (can use crunchy veggies to dip with!)
Um, maybe hummus (the garbanzo beans)

I was going to say tofu too, but I see that you don't like it. Me too, but I am ready to give it another shot. I have a recipe for "cheesey chicken" and I was thinking of using firm tofu cubes in place of the chicken breast.

Hmmm. Will do a little looking. Would you guys be interested in some Vegetarian Times magazines? I have a small collection of them. I tried to go veggie but didn't last more than 3 or 4 months! :) I would love to send you the magazines (free!) :) They are just taking up room on my kitchen counter. PM me if you are interested!

I love Tofu, have you tried stir frying it (the firm kind) with veges and spices? Some people just can't stand it, but I like it! I like soy milk too. How about boca burgers? I make my own, but they come in the freezer section too.

I like Boca burgers but only if they are cooked on the grill and I add the usual onions, ketchup, relish and a slice of cheese. Yum, I'm getting hungry! I think I know what I'll be adding to my grocery list this week!

TigH...I pm'd you!

Oh, what about the Morningstar brand of veggie products? I LOVE the Morningstar "chicken" patties. I used to cook one up and then have it on some wheat bread. I'd add a huge dash of hot sauce and a small amount of ranch dressing and pretend I was eating a buffalo chicken sandwich! :) YUMMMM!!! I also love the Morningstar Grillers burgers. I've tried Boca burgers several times, but just do not enjoy the taste (sorry, weird tastebuds?) ;) But the Morningstar Grillers are delicious, especially cooked on the grill! :) Mmmm!

I got the book "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone" by Deborah Madison for Christmas one year. I love the recipes in this book! I don't think there is a section that outlines protein rich veggie meals though. But it's a great resource for some awesome recipes!!! Love the fried green tomatoes with garlic mayo on crusty bread (drool drool drool). Now I just need to figure out how to tie it in with my WW plan ;)

I was just trying to figure out how I was going to get my protein in today with Lent. Protein is something I really struggle with, I eat meat but not a lot. Today I will make sure that I have a yogurt, cottage cheese with fruit and fat free milk (with fat free hot cocoa of course). The cottage cheese with fruit counts as 14 grams of protein. These sources will give me atleast 1/2 of my protein for the day. Another source is beans, as mentioned in another post. I really like lima beans so that will probably be part of my dinner. I still need one more source for the day, which I hope to incorporate into my lunch somehow or I will be drinking more milk tonight. I do like the veggie burgers. I eat them as part of a salad and use mustard as a dip.

-I eat lots of FF Cottage Cheese. It goes great with Salsa on just about everything
-Just had my first veggie burger of the season last night.
-Protein Bars: I eat a half a bar a day. Although they can be high in calories they are REALLY high in protein, and they come in Blueberry Cheesecake flavor!!!
-I'm not a huge fan of Tofu, but if it's cooked right I do like it.

My daily protein goal is 50 grams. When you add lots of common stuff together it is really easy to get there. Here's a sample from yesterday.....

TOTAL PROTEIN: 70g
Special K (berries): 4g
1% milk: 8g
1/2 Grapefruit: 1g
1/2 Pure Protein Bar: 16g
Veggie Soup: 2g
1/2 Cup FF Cottage Cheese: 13g
Baby Carrots: 2g
Boca Burger: 14g
Hamburger Roll: 4g
Salad w/ light dressing: 1g
Baked Lays: 2g
FF Fudge Bar: 3g

Thanks for sharing that Amy!! Sometimes it's hard to remember that it can be easier than it sounds. :D

I am deffiently going to have to look into some of these things.

But I just figured out that I need 150 grams of protein a day to be at 40% of my daily calories. Now that is a lot.

1500 x 40 % = 600 protein calories
600 / 4 = 150g
