Oh, the vegetarian chili is SO good! I order it in a cup, with the bread in a bag, so I can eat the bread as I wish to eat it, not just because it's soggy.
I tried the tofu skewers at the new place in DCA...Paradise Grill? (something like that) The tofu chunks are huge, but I cut them into quarters and they were quite good. The rice side was really good, too.
I once chatted with Chef Chris about the food there. I might be putting words into his mouth, but the impression I got was that their philosophy was that they wanted their food to make as many people happy as possible. So their rice dishes and their refried beans are NOT made with meat products (unless it says so); so the beans at Zocalo and Cucamonga are fine for a vegetarian to eat, as was the pilaf I had. It's nice to have that knowledge. Also goes with the oil they use to cook fries, etc
However, somewhere I read that the sauce on the fried green tomato sandwich at Hungry Bear is NOT actually vegetarian (I vaguely remember thinking or reading that it has anchovies or something? but that's hardly something that makes everyone happy, LOL)...I do NOT know if that's accurate, but maybe someone here knows.
